Status and rebuilding of European fisheries
Since January 2014, the reformed Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) of the European Union is legally binding for all Member States. It prescribes the end of overfishing and the rebuilding of all stocks above levels that can produce maximum sustainable yields (MSY). This study examines the current status, exploitation pattern, required time for rebuilding, future catch, and future profitability for 397 European stocks. Fishing pressure and biomass were estimated from 2000 to the last year with available data in 10 European ecoregions and 2 wide ranging regions. In the last year with available data, 69% of the 397 stocks were subject to ongoing overfishing and 51% of the stocks were outside of safe biological limits. Only 12% of the stocks fulfilled the prescriptions of the CFP. Fishing pressure has decreased since 2000 in some ecoregions but not in others. Barents Sea and Norwegian Sea have the highest percentage (>60%) of sustainably exploited stocks that are capable of producing MSY. In contrast, in the Mediterranean Sea, fewer than 20% of the stocks are exploited sustainably. Overfishing is still widespread in European waters and current management, which aims at maximum sustainable exploitation, is unable to rebuild the depleted stocks and results in poor profitability. This study examines four future exploitation scenarios that are compatible with the CFP. It finds that exploitation levels of 50–80% of the maximum will rebuild stocks and lead to higher catches than currently obtained, with substantially higher profits for the fishers
Warnung vor dem Zusammenbruch des Dorschbestandes in der westlichen Ostsee
Der Dorschbestand in der westlichen Ostsee befindet sich seit Jahren außerhalb sicherer biologischer Grenzen. Diese Situation hat sich jetzt weiter verschlechtert, so dass im Jahr 2016 die Anzahl der einjährigen Jungdorsche nur 3.5% des durchschnittlichen Nachwuchses betrug. Der Internationale Rat für Meeresforschung (ICES) hat deshalb eine drastische Reduzierung der kommerziellen Fänge im Jahr 2017 angeraten. Leider ist die Politik dieser Empfehlung nicht gefolgt und es sind etwa doppelt so hohe Fänge erlaubt worden. In Deutschland beschlossene finanzielle Hilfsmittel für die Fischer tragen ebenfalls nicht zur Verringerung dieser Fänge bei. Die wenigen einjährigen Dorsche von 2016 werden daher in 2017 stark befischt, bevor sie im Jahr 2018 den Elternbestand stellen. Es ist zu befürchten, dass der Nachwuchs von diesem viel zu kleinen Elternbestand ganz ausbleibt und der westliche Dorschbestand im Jahr 2019 zusammenbricht, mit den entsprechenden drastischen Folgen für Berufs- und Angelfischerei. Um den Fortbestand des westlichen Dorsches zu sichern, schlagen wir vor, die Fischerei und Angelei auf Dorsch in der westlichen Ostsee für zwei Jahre einzustellen, mit Ausgleichszahlungen für Berufsfischer und Angelkutter
Photon pressure induced test mass deformation in gravitational-wave detectors
A widely used assumption within the gravitational-wave community has so far
been that a test mass acts like a rigid body for frequencies in the detection
band, i.e. for frequencies far below the first internal resonance. In this
article we demonstrate that localized forces, applied for example by a photon
pressure actuator, can result in a non-negligible elastic deformation of the
test masses. For a photon pressure actuator setup used in the gravitational
wave detector GEO600 we measured that this effect modifies the standard
response function by 10% at 1 kHz and about 100% at 2.5 kHz

Theory of charge transport in diffusive normal metal / unconventional singlet superconductor contacts
We analyze the transport properties of contacts between unconventional
superconductor and normal diffusive metal in the framework of the extended
circuit theory. We obtain a general boundary condition for the Keldysh-Nambu
Green's functions at the interface that is valid for arbitrary transparencies
of the interface. This allows us to investigate the voltage-dependent
conductance (conductance spectrum) of a diffusive normal metal (DN)/
unconventional singlet superconductor junction in both ballistic and diffusive
cases. For d-wave superconductor, we calculate conductance spectra numerically
for different orientations of the junctions, resistances, Thouless energies in
DN, and transparencies of the interface. We demonstrate that conductance
spectra exhibit a variety of features including a -shaped gap-like
structure, zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) and zero bias conductance dip
(ZBCD). We show that two distinct mechanisms: (i) coherent Andreev reflection
(CAR) in DN and (ii) formation of midgap Andreev bound state (MABS) at the
interface of d-wave superconductors, are responsible for ZBCP, their relative
importance being dependent on the angle between the interface normal
and the crystal axis of d-wave superconductors. For , the ZBCP is due
to CAR in the junctions of low transparency with small Thouless energies, this
is similar to the case of diffusive normal metal / insulator /s-wave
superconductor junctions. With increase of from zero to , the
MABS contribution to ZBCP becomes more prominent and the effect of CAR is
gradually suppressed. Such complex spectral features shall be observable in
conductance spectra of realistic high- junctions at very low temperature

Search for gravitational-wave bursts in LIGO data from the fourth science run
The fourth science run of the LIGO and GEO 600 gravitational-wave detectors,
carried out in early 2005, collected data with significantly lower noise than
previous science runs. We report on a search for short-duration
gravitational-wave bursts with arbitrary waveform in the 64-1600 Hz frequency
range appearing in all three LIGO interferometers. Signal consistency tests,
data quality cuts, and auxiliary-channel vetoes are applied to reduce the rate
of spurious triggers. No gravitational-wave signals are detected in 15.5 days
of live observation time; we set a frequentist upper limit of 0.15 per day (at
90% confidence level) on the rate of bursts with large enough amplitudes to be
detected reliably. The amplitude sensitivity of the search, characterized using
Monte Carlo simulations, is several times better than that of previous
searches. We also provide rough estimates of the distances at which
representative supernova and binary black hole merger signals could be detected

First joint search for gravitational-wave bursts in LIGO and GEO600 data
We present the results of the first joint search for gravitational-wave
bursts by the LIGO and GEO600 detectors. We search for bursts with
characteristic central frequencies in the band 768 to 2048 Hz in the data
acquired between the 22nd of February and the 23rd of March, 2005 (fourth LSC
Science Run - S4). We discuss the inclusion of the GEO600 data in the
Waveburst-CorrPower pipeline that first searches for coincident excess power
events without taking into account differences in the antenna responses or
strain sensitivities of the various detectors. We compare the performance of
this pipeline to that of the coherent Waveburst pipeline based on the maximum
likelihood statistic. This likelihood statistic is derived from a coherent sum
of the detector data streams that takes into account the antenna patterns and
sensitivities of the different detectors in the network. We find that the
coherentWaveburst pipeline is sensitive to signals of amplitude 30 - 50%
smaller than the Waveburst-CorrPower pipeline. We perform a search for
gravitational-wave bursts using both pipelines and find no detection candidates
in the S4 data set when all four instruments were operating stably.Comment: 30 pages, 8 figure
All-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in LIGO S4 data
We report on an all-sky search with the LIGO detectors for periodic
gravitational waves in the frequency range 50-1000 Hz and with the frequency's
time derivative in the range -1.0E-8 Hz/s to zero. Data from the fourth LIGO
science run (S4) have been used in this search. Three different semi-coherent
methods of transforming and summing strain power from Short Fourier Transforms
(SFTs) of the calibrated data have been used. The first, known as "StackSlide",
averages normalized power from each SFT. A "weighted Hough" scheme is also
developed and used, and which also allows for a multi-interferometer search.
The third method, known as "PowerFlux", is a variant of the StackSlide method
in which the power is weighted before summing. In both the weighted Hough and
PowerFlux methods, the weights are chosen according to the noise and detector
antenna-pattern to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio. The respective
advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed. Observing no
evidence of periodic gravitational radiation, we report upper limits; we
interpret these as limits on this radiation from isolated rotating neutron
stars. The best population-based upper limit with 95% confidence on the
gravitational-wave strain amplitude, found for simulated sources distributed
isotropically across the sky and with isotropically distributed spin-axes, is
4.28E-24 (near 140 Hz). Strict upper limits are also obtained for small patches
on the sky for best-case and worst-case inclinations of the spin axes.Comment: 39 pages, 41 figures An error was found in the computation of the C

All-sky LIGO Search for Periodic Gravitational Waves in the Early S5 Data
We report on an all-sky search with the LIGO detectors for periodic
gravitational waves in the frequency range 50--1100 Hz and with the frequency's
time derivative in the range -5.0E-9 Hz/s to zero. Data from the first eight
months of the fifth LIGO science run (S5) have been used in this search, which
is based on a semi-coherent method (PowerFlux) of summing strain power.
Observing no evidence of periodic gravitational radiation, we report 95%
confidence-level upper limits on radiation emitted by any unknown isolated
rotating neutron stars within the search range. Strain limits below 1.E-24 are
obtained over a 200-Hz band, and the sensitivity improvement over previous
searches increases the spatial volume sampled by an average factor of about 100
over the entire search band. For a neutron star with nominal equatorial
ellipticity of 1.0E-6, the search is sensitive to distances as great as 500
pc--a range that could encompass many undiscovered neutron stars, albeit only a
tiny fraction of which would likely be rotating fast enough to be accessible to
LIGO. This ellipticity is at the upper range thought to be sustainable by
conventional neutron stars and well below the maximum sustainable by a strange
