    Get PDF

Assessment activities in Mechanics: How many of them are enough?

The following presents the results of a set of continuous assessment activities undertaken in the subjects of Theory of Mechanics and Mechanisms, in order to analyse if the amount of the assessment activities performed during the course, their level and the method to perform them have influence on the student’s subject failure. During five academic years, the evaluation system have changed the amount and form of assessment exercises done along the course, or in many cases just simplifying them. The results point out that as higher is the perception of amount of work that students notice, higher is the success of the students in the subject. Peculiarly, the decrease in the number of assessment activities increases the subject drop-off. Equally, the recurrence of the assessment model during two consecutive semesters may be the cause of lack of motivation that some students show, principally, those who repeated the subjects. To reduce the level of failure in Mechanics, we are performing a new way to do the assessment activities, during this academic year 2016-17, the so-called Agile project, instead to reduce or eliminate these exercises. Consequently, we will have the first results of applying this methodology at the end of January. The Agile is based on principles of collaboration between students, adaptability and non-stop improvement of the work done. Its objective is to deliver a product to a client at the end of the course. However, the product has to be performed in successive steps through both semesters. Each step is called Sprint. The Sprint duration is two weeks and it has a list of requests to do. At the end of each Sprint, each team shows its product increase achieved during this period. Additionally, the team has to facilitate the activities that they have done to perform the Sprint, specifying who has done each task. This methodology, thus, requires continuous work of the team. In spite of the work that this new methodology supposes, with this way to perform the assessment activities, we may avoid, firstly, last minute poor delivered exercises and secondly, to reduce the level of failure in Mechanics.Postprint (published version

The relevance of innovation as source of competitive advantage is clearly justified in the literature (Adner and Kapoor, 2010; Song and Thieme, 2009). In particular, knowledge, as well as all items related to organizational learning, represents a main factor contributing to the innovation success (i.e., Song and Parry, 1997). In this sense, different authors have emphasized the importance that external sources of knowledge possess for the development and success of the innovation capability (Li and Tang, 2010; Spithoven et al., 2010).The globalization of manufacturing companies is closely linked to the globalization of distribution activities (Mattsson, 2003). It can be said that globalization of retailers drives globalization of manufacturing companies. So the latter will be influenced by the supply conditions of the target markets, the possibilities to supply new markets, or the possible threat to be replaced by alternative suppliers (Ruiz, 2000, Etemad, 2004).At the same time, supply chains have progressively become more international and complex (Monczka and Trent, 2005), representing principal sources of competitive advantage in terms of availability of technological and organizational competencies and access to minor operative costs (Pagano, 2009). The international supply tends increasingly to be considered as a strategic tool chasing to take advantage of the previous advantages. Consequently, organizations should promote this critical organizational relational capability (Kotabe and Murray, 2004)

Networked Heritage Management in the Lower Guadalquivir (Spain)

This paper describes the operations carried out to generate a georeferenced heritage inventory at a supra-municipal scale. The tool establishes links between its heritage elements based on the features and characteristics of the territory. The work has been carried out on the fluvial zone of the Lower Guadalquivir, an area of approximately 8500 km2 located in Andalusia in the south of Spain. The method used is based on the digital inventory of the Andalusian immovable historical heritage generated by the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage, in which more than 500 heritage assets in the study area are indexed. The work begins with the expansion and processing of these assets with the aim of reorganizing them and establishing new parameters in their classification schemes. Subsequently, a spatial analysis developed in a GIS environment detects relationships between heritage assets determined by the physical characteristics of the territory. These relationships are contrasted by historical research, and eight heritage networks in the territory are defined as a result. Finally, one of the networks is used to show how, from the graph theory, it is possible to investigate the detected links. Ultimately, it is discussed how this study allows us to move toward new models of the heritage management of territorial dimension and relational vocation

Moduli Spaces of Semistable Sheaves on Singular Genus One Curves

We find some equivalences of the derived category of coherent sheaves on a Gorenstein genus one curve that preserve the (semi)-stability of pure dimensional sheaves. Using them we establish new identifications between certain Simpson moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on the curve. For rank zero, the moduli spaces are symmetric powers of the curve whilst for a fixed positive rank there are only a finite number of non-isomorphic spaces. We prove similar results for the relative semistable moduli spaces on an arbitrary genus one fibration with no conditions either on the base or on the total space. For a cycle ENE_N of projective lines, we show that the unique degree 0 stable sheaves are the line bundles having degree 0 on every irreducible component and the sheaves O(−1)\mathcal{O}(-1) supported on one irreducible component. We also prove that the connected component of the moduli space that contains vector bundles of rank rr is isomorphic to the rr-th symmetric product of the rational curve with one node.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures. Added the structure of the biggest component of the moduli space of sheaves of degree 0 on a cycle of projective lines. Background of INCASI Project H2020-MSCA-RISE-2015 GA 691004.

    Get PDF
