Optical amplification enhancement in photonic crystals

    Get PDF
Improving and controlling the efficiency of a gain medium is one of the most challenging problems of laser research. By measuring the gain length in an opal based photonic crystal doped with laser dye, we demonstrate that optical amplification is more than twenty-fold enhanced along the Gamma-K symmetry directions of the face centered cubic photonic crystal. These results are theoretically explained by directional variations of the density of states, providing a quantitative connection between density of the states and light amplification

Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to summarize the available evidence regarding circulating kisspeptin and anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) and the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index in adolescents and women with and without polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Method: We performed a comprehensive literature search in Medline, Embase, Cochrane, Scopus, and Web of Science for studies evaluating circulating kisspeptin levels in women with and without PCOS published until September 24th, 2020. Co-primary outcomes were the HOMA-IR index and AMH. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Random-effects models were used to estimate outcomes, and effects reported as mean difference (MD) or standardized MD (SMD) and their 95 % confidence interval (CI). The systematic review and meta-analysis was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) as number CRD42020205030. Results: We evaluated 18 studies including, 1282 PCOS cases and 977 controls. Participants with PCOS were younger (MD = −2.38 years, 95 %CI -4.32 to -0.44), with higher BMI (MD = 1.16, 95 % CI 0.54–1.78), waist-to-hip ratio (MD = 0.04, 95 %CI 0.02 to 0.05), circulating kisspeptin (SMD = 1.15, 95 %CI 0.68–1.62), luteinizing hormone (SMD = 1.29, 95 %CI 0.76–1.83), AMH (SMD = 0.97, 95 %CI 0.60–1,34), total testosterone (SMD = 2.48, 95 %CI 1.73–3.23), free testosterone (SMD = 1.37, 95 %CI 0.56–2.17), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (SMD = 0.72, 95 %CI 0.32–1.13) levels, and Ferriman-Gallwey score (SMD = 5.08, 95 %CI 2.76–7.39), and lower sex hormone-binding globulin level (SMD = −1.34, 95 %CI −2.15 to −0.52). Besides, participants with PCOS had higher HOMA-IR index (SMD = 0.76, 95 %CI 0.35–1.17), and circulating insulin (SMD = 0.75, 95 %CI 0.30–1.19), leptin (SMD = 2.82, 95 %CI 1.35–4.29), and triglycerides (SMD = 2.15, 95 %CI 1.08–3.23) levels than participants without the syndrome. The meta-regression did not identify significant factors influencing circulating kisspeptin. Conclusion: Patients with PCOS showed higher kisspeptin, LH, insulin, AMH, and androgen levels and HOMA-IR index, and lower sex hormone-binding globulin levels than those without the syndrome

Optimal light harvesting structures at optical and infrared frequencies

    Get PDF
One-dimensional light harvesting structures with a realistic geometry nano-patterned on an opaque metallic film are optimized to render high transmission efficiencies at optical and infrared frequencies. Simple design rules are developed for the particular case of a slit-groove array with a given number of grooves that are symmetrically distributed with respect to a central slit. These rules take advantage of the hybridization of Fabry-Perot modes in the slit and surface modes of the corrugated metal surface. Same design rules apply for optical and infrared frequencies. The parameter space of the groove array is also examined with a conjugate gradient optimization algorithm that used as a seed the geometries optimized following physical intuition. Both uniform and nonuniform groove arrays are considered. The largest transmission enhancement, with respect to a uniform array, is obtained for a chirped groove profile. Such enhancement is a function of the wavelength. It decreases from 39% in the optical part of the spectrum to 15% at the long wavelength infrared.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure

The merger history of massive spheroids since z~1 is size independent

Using a compilation of 379 massive (stellar mass M > 10^{11} M_Sun) spheroid-like galaxies from the near-infrared Palomar/DEEP-2 survey, we have probed, up to z~1, whether the presence of companions depends on the size of the host galaxies. We have explored the presence of companions with mass ratios down to 1:10 and 1:100, with respect to the central massive galaxy, and within a projected distance of 30, 50 and 100 kpc of these objects. We find evidence for these companions being equally distributed around both compact and extended massive spheroids. This finding suggests that, at least since z~1, the merger activity in these objects is rather homogeneous across the whole population and its merger history is not affected for the size of the host galaxy. Our result could indicate that both compact and extended massive spheroid-like galaxies are growing in size at the same rate.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Get PDF
Peer Reviewe

Indexación: Web of Science; ScieloBiorend SC (chitosan), BC-1000 EC (grapefruit extract plus bioflavonoids) and ECO-100 SC (bioflavonoids plus organic acids, citric phytoalexins, fatty acids, glycerides and sugars), respectively, suppressed grey rot of apple caused by B. cinerea by 80.1%, 79.0% and 76.5% when used as post-harvest treatments under controlled conditions. When applied as combined pre- and post-harvest treatments Biorend SC inhibited fruit rot by 49.9 %, while BC-1000 EC and ECO-100 SC were ineffective. None of the products inhibited fruit rot when applied as pre-harvest treatments under controlled conditions or as post-harvest treatments under commercial conditions. The algal polysaccharide ulvan used in post-harvest treatments suppressed grey rot by 56.0% under controlled conditions, but had no inhibitory effect on combined pre- and post-harvest treatments. The inability of products to activate defense mechanisms (chitinase and peroxidase) of fruits was consistent with the unsuccessful control of rot by pre-harvest treatment. The results suggest that the natural products used have potential for use in integrated management of Botrytis rot when applied after harvest.
