    A good gesture: exploring nonverbal communication for robust SLDSs

    Actas de las IV Jornadas de Tecnología del Habla (JTH 2006)In this paper we propose a research framework to explore the possibilities that state-of-the-art embodied conversational agents (ECAs) technology can offer to overcome typical robustness problems in spoken language dialogue systems (SLDSs), such as error detection and recovery, changes of turn and clarification requests, that occur in many human-machine dialogue situations in real applications. Our goal is to study the effects of nonverbal communication throughout the dialogue, and find out to what extent ECAs can help overcome user frustration in critical situations. In particular, we have created a gestural repertoire that we will test and continue to refine and expand, to fit as closely as possible the users’ expectations and intuitions, and to favour a more efficient and pleasant dialogue flow for the users. We also describe the test environment we have designed, simulating a realistic mobile application, as well as the evaluation methodology for the assessment, in forthcoming tests, of the potential benefits of adding nonverbal communication in complex dialogue situations.This work has been possible thanks to the support grant received from project TIC2003-09068-C02-02 of the Spanish Plan Nacional de I+D

    Anomalous Roughening in Experiments of Interfaces in Hele-Shaw Flows with Strong Quenched Disorder

    We report experimental evidences of anomalous kinetic roughening in the stable displacement of an oil-air interface in a Hele-Shaw cell with strong quenched disorder. The disorder consists on a random modulation of the gap spacing transverse to the growth direction (tracks). We have performed experiments varying average interface velocity and gap spacing, and measured the scaling exponents. We have obtained beta=0.50, beta*=0.25, alpha=1.0, alpha_l=0.5, and z=2. When there is no fluid injection, the interface is driven solely by capillary forces, and a higher value of beta around beta=0.65 is measured. The presence of multiscaling and the particular morphology of the interfaces, characterized by high slopes that follow a L\'evy distribution, confirms the existence of anomalous scaling. From a detailed study of the motion of the oil--air interface we show that the anomaly is a consequence of different local velocities over tracks plus the coupling in the motion between neighboring tracks. The anomaly disappears at high interface velocities, weak capillary forces, or when the disorder is not sufficiently persistent in the growth direction. We have also observed the absence of scaling when the disorder is very strong or when a regular modulation of the gap spacing is introduced.Comment: 14 pages, 17 figure

    Uses of Native Plant Species of a Communal Rangeland within ‘Sierra de Huautla’ Protected Area, México

    Sustainability of communal rangelands has become a major concern at national and international levels because land use conflicts and associated social conflicts allows for over-utilization of selected species making a high pressure on them and given away their places to species with no use at all becoming lands degraded and unproductive. The objective of the study was to determine floristic composition and native plant uses by local peasants. The range surface is of 4262 ha, belongs to the communal land ‘El Limon’, in Tepalcingo, Morelos, Mexico, and it is within the Natural Reserve Area “Sierra de Huautla”. Native vegetation is mainly of deciduous shrubs, high temperatures year round and a rainy season of 4 months. Local peasants were surveyed on uses of the collected and previously identified plants. Number of species was 456, distributed in 266 and 76 botanical genders and families, respectively. Of the species identified 66, 22 and 12% had one, two or more than two uses according to local peasants. Among uses: 59% of the species were used as forage, 8% eatable, 7% firewood or ornamental, 6% medical herb, lumber or other use 4 %, construction material 3 % and for resin or handcraft 1%. The range showed a very high plant biodiversity, this feature allows for a high resiliency toward human activities

    T-Norm y desajuste léxico y acústico en reconocimiento de locutor dependiente de texto

    Actas de las V Jornadas en Tecnología del Habla (JTH 2008)Este trabajo presenta un estudio extenso sobre T-norm aplicado a Reconocimiento de Locutor Dependiente de Texto, analizando también los problemas del desajuste léxico y acústico. Veremos cómo varían los resultados teniendo en cuenta la dependencia de género y realizando T-norm a nivel de frase, fonema y estado con cohortes de impostores de distintos tamaños. El estudio demuestra que implementar T-norm por fonema o estado puede llegar a conseguir mejoras relativas de hasta un 16% y que realizar una selección de cohorte basada en el género puede mejorar más aún los resultados con respecto al caso independiente de género

    Determination of biosorption mechanism in biomass of agave, using spectroscopic and microscopic techniques for the purification of contaminated water

    [Abstract] Lead (Pb2+) and copper (Cu2+) are polluting metals due to their toxicity; however, the extraction of these metals is essential for economic development, so it is important to look for efficient and low-cost alternatives that can remove heavy metals from the various bodies of water. One of the alternatives used in this work is biosorption, for which an agroindustrial waste (epidermis from Agave atrovirens) was used to evaluate the affinity of removal of lead and copper in aqueous solutions; in addition, spectroscopy and microscopy techniques were used to elucidate and corroborate the removal and affinity capacity of the agave epidermis for both metals studied. The optimal pH value for the removal of both metals was 3. The adsorption isotherms yielded a qmax of 25.7 and 8.6 mg/g for lead and copper, respectively. Adjusting to the Langmuir-Freundlich model, the adsorption kinetics were pseudo-second order, and it was found that the equilibrium time was at 140 min. The spectroscopy and microscopy analyses corroborated the affinity between metals and functional groups of the agave, as well as with the elemental analysis, which reported 17.38% of lead and 4.25% of copper.[Resumen] El plomo (Pb2+) y el cobre (Cu2+) son metales contaminantes debido a su toxicidad; sin embargo, la extracción de estos metales es indispensable para el desarrollo económico, por lo que es importante buscar alternativas eficientes y de bajo costo que puedan remover metales pesados de los diversos cuerpos de agua. Una de las alternativas utilizadas en este trabajo es la biosorción, para la cual se utilizó un residuo agroindustrial (epidermis de Agave atrovirens), para evaluar la afinidad de remoción del plomo y cobre en soluciones acuosas; adicionalmente, se emplearon técnicas de espesctroscopía y microscopía que permitieron elucidar y corroborar la capacidad de remoción y afinidad que tuvo la epidermis de A. atrovirens para ambos metales estudiados. El valor óptimo de pH para la remoción de ambos metales fue 3. Las isotermas de adsorción arrojaron una qmax de 25.7 y 8.6 mg/g para el plomo y cobre, respectivamente. Ajustando al modelo de Langmuir-Freundlich, las cinéticas de adsorción resultaron de pseudo-segundo orden, se encontró que el tiempo de equilibrio es a los 140 min. El análisis espectroscópico y microscópico, corroboró la afinidad entre metales y grupos funcionales del agave, así como con el análisis elemental, el cual reportó 17.38% de plomo y 4.25% de cobre

    A computational analysis of the impact of bore-to-stroke ratio on emissions and efficiency of a HSDI engine

    [EN] Research on combustion systems for Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) is guided by the necessity of improving engine efficiency while achieving the pollutant regulations. In this framework, this study identifies and describes the effect of the bore-to-stroke ratio (B/S) on the combustion system performance and emissions by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The study is applied to a 4-cylinder 4-stroke High Speed Direct Injection (HSDI) CI engine. It is divided in two parts, the first part is focused on one operating point and presents a detailed description of the main effects of different B/S ratios configurations, and the second part compares the results with different engine operating conditions. For both parts the air management, injection settings and compression ratio were kept constant in order to isolate the impact of the B/S ratio. The results confirmed that the indicated thermal efficiency was increased for lower B/S ratio because of the combustion chamber surface area decrease and faster combustion. Regarding the emissions, NOx and soot presented a strong and opposed dependence on B/S ratio generated mostly due to enhanced air¿fuel mixing for lower B/S ratio.     Differential induction of apoptosis, interferon signaling, and phagocytosis in macrophages infected with a panel of attenuated and nonattenuated poxviruses

    Due to the essential role macrophages play in antiviral immunity, it is important to understand the intracellular and molecular processes that occur in macrophages following infection with various strains of vaccinia virus, particularly those used as vaccine vectors. Similarities as well as differences were found in macrophages infected with different poxvirus strains, particularly at the level of virus-induced apoptosis and the expression of immunomodulatory genes, as determined by microarray analyses. Interestingly, the attenuated modified vaccinia Ankara virus (MVA) was particularly efficient in triggering apoptosis and beta interferon (IFN- ) secretion and in inducing changes in the expression of genes associated with increased activation of innate immunity, setting it apart from the other five vaccinia virus strains tested.
