Laminosioptes cysticola and Gallibacterium anatis infections in a lymphoma diseased chicken hen with a cystic right oviduct

A domestic hen showing infraorbital swelling was presented for a routine classroom demonstration of avian diagnostics. At necropsy, tiny whitish caseo-calcareous nodules were found in the subcutaneous tissues of the carcass, produced by the subcutaneous fowl mite, Laminosioptes cysticola. Gallibacterium anatis biovar haemolytica was isolated from the infraorbital sinus, it containing a caseous exudate. During necropsy, a conspicuous cyst was found in the abdominal cavity. Microscopic examination of the internal lining of the cyst revealed a single cuboidal to columnar, ciliated epithelium, leading to a diagnosis of oviductal cyst. Also, the microscopic examination of the heart, lung, liver and kidney reveal a multifocal infiltration of lymphoma cells. It appears the first case of simultaneous presentation of these conditions from a single chicken

At the present moment work we have studied the soils, ecology and vegetal communities which define the habitat where the "Te of the Sierra " live and is developed. We have described 4 soil pro files in all point where this plant live according to with the altitude, orientation and the nature of the geological material, so that the whole ecology of this plant has been studied. In the same way we have included a table with four floristics inventories pointed ont in the location of the soil profiles.

Objectives: To measure the diagnostic agreement between Primary Care (PC) and hospital information systems, in order to assess the usefulness of health care records for research purposes. Setting: Cross-sectional retrospective study integrating PC and hospital diagnostic information for the Aragon population admitted to hospital in 2010. Participants: 75.176 patients were analysed. Interventions: Similarities, differences and the kappa index were calculated for each of the diagnoses recorded in both information systems. Main measurements: The studied diseases included COPD, diabetes, hypertension, cerebrovascular disease, ischaemic heart disease, asthma, epilepsy, and heart failure. Results: Diagnostic concordance was higher in men and between 45 and 64 years. Diabetes was the condition showing the highest concordance (kappa index: 0.75), while asthma had the lowest values (kappa index: 0.34). Conclusions: The low concordance between the diagnostic information recorded in PC and in the hospital setting calls for urgent measures to ensure that healthcare professionals have a comprehensive picture of patient''s health problems

Migration distance does not predict blood parasitism in a migratory songbird

    Get PDF
Migration can influence host–parasite dynamics in animals by increasing exposure to parasites, by reducing the energy available for immune defense, or by culling of infected individuals. These mechanisms have been demonstrated in several comparative analyses; however, few studies have investigated whether conspecific variation in migration distance may also be related to infection risk. Here, we ask whether autumn migration distance, inferred from stable hydrogen isotope analysis of summer‐grown feathers (δ 2Hf) in Europe, correlates with blood parasite prevalence and intensity of infection for willow warblers (Phylloscopus trochilus ) wintering in Zambia. We also investigated whether infection was correlated with individual condition (assessed via corticosterone, scaled mass index, and feather quality). We found that 43% of birds were infected with Haemoproteus palloris (lineage WW1). Using generalized linear models, we found no relationship between migration distance and either Haemoproteus infection prevalence or intensity. There was spatial variation in breeding ground origins of infected versus noninfected birds, with infected birds originating from more northern sites than noninfected birds, but this difference translated into only slightly longer estimated migration distances (~214 km) for infected birds. We found no relationship between body condition indices and Haemoproteus infection prevalence or intensity. Our results do not support any of the proposed mechanisms for migration effects on host–parasite dynamics and cautiously suggest that other factors may be more important for determining individual susceptibility to disease in migratory bird species

Effects of Pb+2 on three populations of Zygophyllum fabago: Genotoxicity study

[ENG] Zygophyllum fabago is a succulent perennial shrub that is able to tolerate harsh environmental conditions prevailing in the southeastern Spain, where mine tailing ponds are scattered throughout the Sierra de Cartagena. However, despite being a pioneer species in the study area and produce a substantial amount of viable seeds, the rate of soil cover by this species in mine tailing ponds is low, probably because of adverse conditions in the area, especially high content of heavy metals. The main objective of this work is to assess the impact of applying a high lead concentration to Z. fabago plants from three different populations in the level of stress endured by the plants. Two genotoxicity assays (the comet assay and the micronucleus test) were carried out in order to evaluate the DNA damage induced by the heavy metal. Our results show that lead toxicity affects differently each population. This may be due to the different adaptation mechanisms developed to survive in any environment.
