Neonatal sepsis by bacteria: a big problema for children.

    Get PDF
Neonatal sepsis is an important but underestimated problem around the world. It is defined as disease affecting newborns ≤ 1 month of age with clinical symptoms and positive blood cultures. Infection is an important cause of morbidity and mortality during the neonatal period, despite the great improvements in intensive neonatal care and the use of extended spectrum antimicrobial agents. The incidence of this disease in developed countries is 1/1,000 in normal term neonates and 4/1,000 in preterm neonates. These values increase in low-weight preterm neonates. In developing countries, this incidence increases to 2.2-8.6/1,000 live births. Neonatal sepsis can be subdivided into early-onset neonatal sepsis and late-onset neonatal sepsis

A new device for determining the compression after impact strength in thin laminates

    Get PDF
In this work a new device has been developed to estimate compression-after-impact (CAI) strength. This device allows the testing of laminates thinner than those recommended by CAI test standards. The proposed device is composed of a support structure, with a set of vertical ribs that stabilize the specimen during the test, increasing the buckling load. A numerical analysis was made to ensure that global buckling does not occur in the laminate during the CAI test, and that there is no interference with the damage area. Laminate specimens were tested with the proposed device and the ASTM device. For specimens 4.416 mm thick (thickness according to ASTM D7137 standard), the test results were similar with both devices. For thinner laminates, higher CAI strength was estimated with the proposed device than with the ASTM device, showing that the global buckling was delayed. The authors are indebted to the Foundation for Research, Development and Application of Composite Materials (FIDAMC) and Innovation Works (EADS) for the financial support of this work (project Ilia). Also, the authors acknowledge the collaboration of the mechanical laboratories in FIDAMC and in Department of Continuum Mechanics and Structural Analysis of University Carlos III of Madrid.Publicad

Visual behavior influence on decision in volleyball blocking

The visual behavior of 38 volleyball players (23.9 4.2 years), who took part in federated competition, was analyzed with the eye tracking system (Mobile Eye) during visualization of real size video sequences. Regression models show that higher success percentages were obtained when the duration of fixations is low in HC and CB areas, and when the number of fixations increases in BM zone and decreases in CB zon

Characterization of CTX-M-14 and CTX-M-15 producing Escherichia coli strains causing neonatal sepsis

Neonatal sepsis is a disease affecting newborns ≤1 month of age with clinical symptoms and positive blood cultures. The number of Escherichia coli strains causing neonatal sepsis resistant to the antibiotics used in the treatment is increasing. In this study, two E. coli strains causing sepsis in neonates of mothers infected with an E. coli strain harboring extended spectrum beta-lactamases were characterized. The blaCTX-M-15 and the blaCTX-M-14 genes were found in an IncFIA and nontypeable transferable plasmids, respectively. In addition, these highly virulent strains belonged to ST705 and ST156 clonal groups, respectively. The presence of strains, which are highly virulent and resistant to ampicillin, gentamicin, and cephalosporins, makes a change in empirical treatment necessary as well as an increase in the surveillance of these infections

An anti-islanding protection based on RoCoF compliant with ENTSO-E and IEC 62116

    Get PDF
In case of unintentional islanding, distributed generation units must be able to detect it and disconnect from the grid in less than 2 seconds. In this work, a Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF) method has been developed for islanding detection. Since these algorithms are conditioned by the requirements of grid codes, ENTSO-E network code and IEC 62116 have been taken into account. The RoCoF anti-islanding algorithm has been developed in MATLAB-Simulink and implemented through rapid prototyping techniques in an FPGA ALTERA Cyclone V. To check the proposed protection algorithm, simulation tests have been carried out. Finally, the RoCoF anti-islanding protection has been validated using FPGA in the loop and experimentally in a real 20-kW inverter. © 2022, European Association for the Development of Renewable Energy, Environment and Power Quality (EA4EPQ). We have focused in relating landscape changes to natural resources management and climatic events. Firstly, we carried out seven radiocarbon dates suggesting the origin of this record ca. 240 cal BC. The palynological data show the existence of dense high-mountain pine woodlands dominated by Pinus sylvestris/nigra from the Late Iron Age to the Muslim period. Later, from the Christian period, anthropogenic activities have intensified, especially livestock grazing in the Contemporary Age. Its consequences are the progressive disappearance of highmountain pine forests and the extension of grasslands by means of fire, which has shaped current landscape dominated by broom communities.Este trabajo ha sido financiado por el proyecto Desirè-HAR2013-43701-P (Plan Nacional I+D+I, Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad de España). Effects of a mutation in the gyrA gene on the virulence of uropathogenic Escherichia coli

Fluoroquinolones are among the drugs most extensively used for the treatment of bacterial infections in human and veterinary medicine. Resistance to quinolones can be chromosome or plasmid mediated. The chromosomal mechanism of resistance is associated with mutations in the DNA gyrase- and topoisomerase IV-encoding genes and mutations in regulatory genes affecting different efflux systems, among others. We studied the role of the acquisition of a mutation in the gyrA gene in the virulence and protein expression of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC). The HC14366M strain carrying a mutation in the gyrA gene (S83L) was found to lose the capacity to cause cystitis and pyelonephritis mainly due to a decrease in the expression of the fimA, papA, papB, and ompA genes. The levels of expression of the fimA, papB, and ompA genes were recovered on complementing the strain with a plasmid containing the gyrA wild-type gene. However, only a slight recovery was observed in the colonization of the bladder in the GyrA complement strain compared to the mutant strain in a murine model of ascending urinary tract infection. In conclusion, a mutation in the gyrA gene of uropathogenic E. coli reduced the virulence of the bacteria, likely in association with the effect of DNA supercoiling on the expression of several virulence factors and proteins, thereby decreasing their capacity to cause cystitis and pyelonephritis
