Identification of novel mechanisms of action contributing to the biological activity of cytotoxic natural compounds

Part I: Cephalostatin 1 is a potent marine cytotoxic compound reported to induce apoptosis without cytochrome c release and apoptosome formation. This work shows that, however, caspase-9 is essential for the induction of apoptosis. Cephalostatin 1 induces endoplasmic reticulum stress together with the activation of the ASK1/JNK cascade as well as caspase-4 and caspase-2, which act upstream of caspase-9 and are required for apoptosis. Part II: Sesquiterpene lactones are secondary plant metabolites with cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory activities. It was found that 11α,13-dihydrohelenalin acetate (α,β-unsaturated cyclopentenone) induces classical apoptosis whereas 7-hydroxycostunolide (α-methylene-γ-lactone) induces a novel form of cell death characterised by a fast and strong exposure of phosphatidylserine in agreement with a strong activation of phagocytosis in cocultured macrophages

Evaluación del estado de la mezcla asfáltica en servicio de un pavimento rehabilitado que presentó afectaciones de tipo deformación

Trabajo de investigaciónEl presente trabajo de grado se refiere a la evaluación del estado de la mezcla asfáltica de un sector de pavimento flexible de 7.16 Km de longitud, que con menos de un año de rehabilitado mediante colocación de sobrecarpeta de refuerzo, presentó afectaciones de tipo deformación. El objeto final del trabajo de grado consistió en determinar, a partir del análisis de resultados obtenidos mediante la evaluación realizada, la profundidad de intervención requerida para eliminar la patología presente en el pavimento. Los análisis realizados permitieron concluir falla por estabilidad de la mezcla asfáltica, contenido importante de arena natural en la mezcla, exceso en el contenido de asfalto, disminución total de vacíos y finalmente un requerimiento de retiro de 0.14 m de espesor.EspecializaciónEspecialista en Ingeniería de Pavimento

Chapter 12- A New Vision for Promoting Equity and Inclusion in Academic Mentoring Programs

What are the pitfalls of conventional student, faculty, and staff mentoring programs? Despite good intentions, how might they negatively impact Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), as well as other marginalized faculty who are women, LGBTQIA+, Persons with Disabilities (PWD), or first-generation college students (e.g., grew up in household where no parent/legal guardian earned a four-year college degree in the United States or abroad)? How could employing an intersectional framework—attention to the simultaneity of systems of oppression and resistance—as inquiry and praxis transform student, faculty, and staff mentoring programs? This chapter examines the challenges and possibilities for advancing equity and inclusion that considers simultaneous and complex social identities and statuses of faculty, students and staff (and complex identities such as BIPOC, women, first-generation college status, and/or PWD), as relevant to structuring successful mentoring programs. In this chapter, we (a) explain the vital necessity of mentoring to advance inclusive excellence, (b) discuss mentors’ role in designing strategies for creating more inclusive educational and scholarly environments, and (c) review impediments to successful mentoring practices that have deleterious effects on students, faculty, and staff who are BIPOC, women, PWD, LGBTQIA+, and first-generation college status. This review shines a light on a number of common missteps in mentoring relationships, including senior staff and faculty members’ fixed mindsets and one-dimensional approaches toward students, staff, and junior faculty from marginalized groups; deficit perspectives about junior faculty members’ intellectual contributions; color-, gender-, disability-, class-, and other power-evasive perspectives on the part of senior faculty and their resultant lack of intervention when students, staff, and junior faculty are targets of microaggressions and bullying; insensitive and triggering comments by senior faculty (even as content in conventional mentoring trainings); and lack of critical reflexivity amongst faculty who have been assigned to serve as mentors to BIPOC, PWD, LGBTQIA+, first-generation college status, students, staff, and other faculty. Based on this review, we recommend several promising practices for mentoring BIPOC, PWD, LGBTQIA+, first-generation college status, and other minoritized students, staff, and faculty at all ranks, including but not limited to the importance of critical reflexivity and centering the assets of mentees so that senior faculty can become better mentors to students (both undergraduate and graduate), staff, and other faculty

An exploration of the potential benefits of integrated pest management systems and the use of insect resistant potatoes to control the Guatemalan Tuber Moth (Tecia solanivora Povolny) in Ventaquemada, Colombia:

"CORPOICA and IFPRI implemented a research project in Ventaquemada, Colombia. The project's goal was to asses the benefits of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices and the potential of Genetically Modified insect resistant (Bt) potatoes to manage damage caused by the Guatemalan Tuber Moth (Tecia solanivora Povolny). The Guatemalan Tuber Moth is particularly destructive because field spraying on the adult stage is ineffective and there exists damage specificity to the tubers. Excessive pesticide sprays have resulted in resistance to several insecticides. Insect resistant (Bt) potatoes has been shown an effective means to control other members of the Tuber Moth complex. Thus a Bt potato may play a role in managing Tecia in Colombia. This is an ex ante study as there are no Bt potatoes currently under field conditions in Colombia.. To examine this issue, we conducted a survey in 2003 of 78 farmers in the region to estimate a baseline of traditionally and IPM managed systems. The first year survey was supplemented with focus groups to examine damage and production costs in 2003 and 2004. We also implemented activities such as field verification of IPM practices and damage, a Farmer Field School and other participatory methods. Our analysis uses methods such partial budgeting analysis, a production function input abatement expectations model, and an economic surplus model augmented by stochastic simulations. Results of the analysis presented here outlines estimated losses under field and storage conditions, likely range of benefits accrued by farmers in the region due to the potential adoption of a portfolio of IPM management practices and Bt potatoes. Results from the survey conducted in 2003 show that producers in the area have endured significant field and storage losses within the previous 10 years, but were low in that particular year. Initial results where confirmed by results of focus groups in 2003 and 2004 which show very low field and storage damage. Sustained precipitation explains the observed low levels of damage by the Tuber Moth. Low levels of damage induced zero (or even negative) cost differences between conventional and IPM management. In contrast, using the proposed expectation model to estimate expected payoffs to IPM investments show that even with low levels of damage it still pays for producers to invest in IPM practices. The economic surplus estimates show that even considering variability of field and storage losses, as well as of other critical parameters, the use of Bt potatoes in Colombia creates a positive return to investment to Bt potato research, assuming that damage is present under field conditions. ALFABETIZACIÓN Y CIUDADANÍA: HACIA UNA CONSTRUCCIÓN DE LA RELACIÓN ENTRE LENGUAJE Y PODER

El presente artículo se deriva de un proyecto de investigación sobre alfabetización y educación lingüística en lengua materna y lengua extranjera. El objetivo central del documento consiste en analizar cómo actúan los procesos de alfabetización en el anclaje de los procesos sociales y políticos como estructuras de poder que intervienen para consolidar bases firmes e interactuar en una sociedad con una ciudadanía afianzada. Para ello, se presenta una revisión documental en la que se desarrolla la problemática de la alfabetización como parte de una política diferenciada que lejos de coadyuvar a la disminución del analfabetismo, contribuye a legitimar las desigualdades e inequidades entre la población. Lo anterior, tiene un efecto directo en la productividad del país y margina a los jóvenes de toda posibilidad de participación ciudadana en un marco de justicia social, democracia y liberta

La higiene hospitalaria es uno de los aspectos fundamentales, en el control de infecciones. El medio ambiente hospitalario cumple un rol importante, en la trasmisión de enfermedades y se ha podido relacionar, en algunas oportunidades, como causa directa de infecciones en los pacientes y ha sido responsable de grandes brotes epidémicos. Las infecciones nosocomiales (IN) ocasionan en el mundo 1.400 muertos cada día y constituyen las complicaciones intrahospitalarias más frecuentes. Las manos de los trabajadores del equipo de salud son un vehículo muy importante para la trasmisión de microorganismos multi resistente y de infecciones hospitalarias. Las IN de pacientes causadas por las manos contaminadas del personal de la salud es una de las formas de diseminación de los agentes infecciosos más comunes. La higiene de las manos del personal en los centros de salud, es el procedimiento aséptico más importante en la prevención y control de enfermedades infecciosas. Es por eso que se debe considerar que todo lo que rodea al paciente debe gozar de una exhaustiva higiene para prevenir infecciones como principio fundamental. Evaluación del conocimiento pedagógico del contenido para enseñar matemáticas elementales

Se presenta un estudio que permitió desarrollar un instrumento para evaluar una componente del conocimiento pedagógico del contenido para enseñar matemáticas: el conocimiento del profesor acerca de cómo aprenden matemáticas los alumnos. Esta componente ha sido descrita teóricamente por otros autores, pero no había podido ser evaluada de manera fiable en pruebas masivas. En los resultados de la aplicación del instrumento a diferentes grupos de personas, se detectan aspectos del conocimiento que el conocimiento disciplinar no explica, aunque este los afecta. Este tipo de conocimiento se encuentra especialmente en profesores de educación primaria con mención en matemáticas tanto en ejercicio como en formación.We present a study that allowed for the development of an instrument to assess a component of pedagogical content knowledge to teach mathematics: the teacher's knowledge about how students learn mathematics. This component has been described theoretically by other authors but could not be assessed reliably in mass testing. In the outcome of applying the instrument to different groups of people, we identify certain aspects of knowledge that cannot be explained by the disciplinary knowledge, although is affected by it. This kind of knowledge is detected particularly in primary school teachers with specialization in mathematics, both in service and in training
