Business Cycle and Speculative Pressures in a Target Zone
In the past time, most economies have suffered cyclical fluctuations in their activity which may influence the optimal use of productive factors in long slow-growth phases or price stability in periods of fast growth. This paper focuses on the possible interrelationship between business cycles and exchange rate ‡uctuations. We have chosen the European Monetary System framework in the nineties, from June 1989 to December 1998, because the Peseta belonged to the EMS during that time. This sample is specially interesting because it includes the worst crisis of the System in 1992-93 and the following ones affecting emerging countries like Mexico, Brazil or Russia at the end of the decade. We use a Binary Dependent Variable Logit Model to estimate the readjustment probability inside a band for two currencies, the Peseta and the french Franc . We calculate the dependent variable values from a Markov-Switching Regime Model with constant transition probabilities. We prove that it is a suitable method and that it allows both real and monetary variables to be identified in order to explain speculative pressures.Readjustment Probability, Speculative Pressures, Economic Fluctuations.
alemanes Peter Koch y Wulf Oesterreicher
The notions of “diatopic/ diastratic/diaphasic
dimension” are firmly established in
current linguistic theory to account for the
innate variation of each and every historical
language. However, while dialectal and
social varieties are described as part of the
system or langue-level, and therefore
as
substantial to the speakers’ own competence,
diaphasic phenomena are usually
thought of as finding their place at the level
of parole. Hence, geolects and sociolects
are considered homogeneous and studied
by linguists as functional sintopic and sinstratic
languages, whereas the “colloquial”
modality is still seen as a largely heterogeneous
category. Facing this inconsistence,
the “variation chain” model proposed (following
Coseriu’s seminal ideas) by Peter
Koch and Wulf Oesterreicher allows to be
conceived, diaphasic varieties to be conceived,
among others, as homogeneous methodological
constructs, while at the same time helping to explain each kind of variation’s
internal dynamics and workings on
discourse. Hence, this contribution aims at
putting forth the applicability of this model
and theoretical framework to future studies
on the features of spoken Spanish

Doing (things with) words: discursivity as a generic-essential language universal. The present paper highlights the need to stress the fact that languages are in principle discourse building or formulation techniques; or expressed differently, techniques which have as their aim to make words; and it also suggests that doing things and doing things with those words should be seen as secondary functions with regard to the formulating or discursive function of language, which in turn is postulated as a generic-essential universal. The consideration of discursivity as a generic-essential language universal can be firstly justified via the rational a priori path of its deduction from the actual definition of the concept of language and, secondly, in inductive terms, through the examination of several phenomena (linguistic units, strategies and positions) the study of which requires the adoption of a perspective based on the process (enérgeia) and not exclusively on the product (érgon), amongst them the research into the mimesis of orality in writing, the analysis of interruption and reformulation mechanisms, and the examination of what some formalist and functionalist syntactic schoolsusually refer to as ‘left periphery’ of the utterance
Andalusian and American Spanish in Situations of Communicative Distance. Towards one Single Panhispanic Norm?
As the Asociación de Academias de la lengua española states in some of its most recent
normative publications, “Spanish is not identical in all the places it is spoken”. In fact, “due to
its status as a supranational language, Spanish is really a cluster of diff erent norms”. However, it
argues that despite the evident diff erences, all these diff erent norms share “a large common base:
that which manifests itself in the formal register of educated speakers. Th is is extraordinarily
homogeneous throughout the Spanish speaking world, as the variations between the diff erent
geographical areas are minimal and are almost entirely phonetic or lexical” (RAE 2005: xiv-xv).
Th ese ‘minimal diff erences’ include many characteristics that Andalusian, and above all western Andalusian, shares with American Spanish. It could be tempting to award the same status to
such materially identical phenomena, especially considering that both varieties share a common
past, and have experienced similar claims for their linguistic independence with respect to the
common standard language in diff erent historical periods. Th is article contests that view and
argues that a clear distinction should be made between Andalusian and American Spanish
phenomena, since, as Wulf Oesterreicher says, linguistically speaking “raw linguistic data, e.g.
the existence of this or that sound, construction or word in one area or another, are not interesting
at all. It is only the value ascribed to the phenomenon, in other words, its diasystematic mark and
the place it occupies in the variational space of a particular language, that constitutes linguistic
facts» (Oesterreicher 2002: 286). From this point of view, Andalusian and American Spanish
linguistic facts may be materially identical but they do not appear to enjoy identical status
Natural Selection, Rational Explanation and Linguistic Change: Towards a Non-Evolutionist Epistemological Fundamentation of Grammaticalization Theory
Neo-Darwinist linguistics has drawn
analogies between linguistic change and genetic
replication mechanisms typical of biological evolution.
In contrast, academic studies on historical
syntax working inside the framework of grammaticalization
theory have provided rational explanations
to instances of linguistic change that cannot
be subsumed by concepts belonging to evolutionary
biology. This article brings together those explanations
under a hermeneutical -and hence not
naturalist- epistemological framework. This may
provide historians of Spanish language with an alternative
metatheorical approach beyond Neo-
Darwinist, monist explanations

This paper aims to provide a methodical image of the scientific-philosophical positions
held by Eugenio Coseriu and Esa Itkonen, two scholars who share the same view about
the ontology of language and its consequences for the methodology and epistemology of
linguistics, but whose contributions are rarely put side by side. It is not easy to gain access
to Coseriu’s epistemological stance since his opinions are scattered across many different
works. For this reason my main purpose will be to introduce his position through a
systematic comparison to the very similar scientific-philosophical assumptions which
Itkonen has exhibited and defended in a more comprehensive and exhaustive way. In
order to achieve a proper understanding of Coseriu’s and Itkonen’s epistemological
convictions, it will be previously necessary to define the domains of philosophy of science
and philosophy of linguistics and to characterize the two divergent streams we find inside
this metatheoretical domain of research. Subsequently, from the hermeneutic or
phenomenological point of view shared by Coseriu and Itkonen, I will discuss what kind
of (scientific) explanation is to be expected from human sciences, and I will consider the
relationship between the subject and the object of research that exists in this kind of
sciences. Conclusively, I will also examine to what extent for both Coseriu and Itkonen
this relationship determines the specific epistemic act we make use of in disciplines such
as linguistics (namely, intuition), and also the necessity to differentiate them from natural
sciences, where observation prevails
