Effect of timing and female quality on clutch size in the Collared Flycatcher Ficedula albicollis

Capsule: Laying date and female age appear to be related to clutch size. Aims: To test two hypotheses ('date' and 'quality'), which might explain why fewer eggs are laid late in the season. Methods: Four years of data and multivariate analysis were used to test the effects of timing of breeding and female quality reflected by morphological variables and age on clutch size in the Collared Flycatcher Ficedula albicollis. We estimated food supply during parental care by measuring diet composition of nestlings. Results: We distinguished the independent effects of date and age of females on clutch size. The type of prey fed to nestlings was different early and late in the season. Hence food supply during the nestling care period may be a limiting environmental factor that indirectly determines clutch size. Conclusion: Our results are consistent with the predictions of the date hypothesis, but the quality hypothesis was also partially supported. Depending on year effects, 30-50% of the variance in clutch size may be related to the timing of breeding and an additional 5-10% may be due to quality (age) differences between early- and late-breeding birds

Emotional Processes in Elaborating a Historical Trauma in the Daily Press

Twentieth century has witnessed several cases of mass traumatization when groups as wholes were ostracized even threated with annihilation. From the perspectives of identity trauma, when harms are afflicted to a group of people by other groups because of their categorical membership, ethnic and national traumas stand out. This paper aims to investigate long-term consequences of permanent traumatization on national identity with presenting a narrative social psychological study as a potential way of empirical exploration of the processes of collective traumatization and trauma elaboration. A Narrative Trauma Elaboration Model has been introduced which identifies linguistic markers of the elaboration process. Newspaper articles (word count = 203172) about a significant national trauma of the Hungarian history, Treaty of Trianon (1920), were chosen from a ninety year time span and emotional expressions of narratives were analysed with a narrative categorical content analytic tool (NarrCat). Longitudinal pattern of data show very weak emotional processing of the traumatic event. Results are discussed in terms of collective victimhood as core element of national identity and its effects on trauma elaboration

Laser Cutting of Stainless Steel Thin Sheets with Pulsed Nd:Yag Laser

The parameters of laser cutting mainly depend on material and from thickness. In case of a given material and thickness many settings can be chosen. In this article we examine the laser cutting of 0,4 mm thickness stainless steel sheets with pulsed Nd:YAG laser. We examine the effect of cutting speed on cut quality in case of three different combinations of pulse energy and pulse frequency. Good cut quality and relatively high cutting speed can be achieved with 800 Hz and 20.7 mJ setting, we can cut higher speed, but poor cut quality with 400 Hz and 49 mJ setting

Current concept on the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease-crosstalk between genetic and microbial factors: Pathogenic bacteria and altered bacterial sensing or changes in mucosal integrity take "toll"?

    Get PDF
The pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is only partially understood. Various environmental and host (e.g. genetic-, epithelial-, immune and non-immune) factors are involved. It is a multifactorial polygenic disease with probable genetic heterogeneity. Some genes are associated with IBD itself, while others increase the risk of ulcerative colitis (UC) or Crohn's disease (CD) or are associated with disease location and/or behaviour. This review addresses recent advances in the genetics of IBD. The article discusses the current information on the crosstalk between microbial and genetic factors (e.g. NOD2/CARD15, SLC22A46A5 and DLG5). The genetic data acquired in recent years help in understanding the pathogenesis of IBD and can identify a number of potential targets for therapeutic intervention. In the future, genetics may help more accurately diagnose and predict disease course in IBD

Depigmented wing patch size is a condition-dependent indicator of viability in male collared flycatchers

Honesty of sexual advertisement is thought to be the result of signalling costs. Because production costs of depigmented plumage patches are probably very low, their role as honest signals of individual quality has been questioned. Costs of bearing these traits, however, should also be taken into account. Studies on proximate determination and possible information content of white badges are very rare. We investigated repeatability, sensu lato heritability, and condition- and age-dependence of white wing patch size, a male display trait in a population of collared flycatchers (Ficedula albicollis), based on 4 years of data. By comparing relationships between age and wing patch size (1) within individuals among years versus (2) among individuals within years, we could address the viability indicator value of the trait. Wing patch size approximately doubled at the transition from subadult to adult plumage, and its change was significantly related to body condition the previous season. Repeatability and heritability values suggest that the trait is informative already in subadult plumage, and that genetic and early environmental effects are important in its determination, the latter only during the first year of life. Thus, wing patch size can act as a condition-dependent signal of genetic quality. Indeed, discrepancy between results from the horizontal and vertical age-dependence approaches shows that the trait was positively related to expected lifespan. After examining several alternative explanations, we conclude that wing patch size indicates genetically based viability. This is the first study to demonstrate a good genes viability benefit conferred by a depigmented plumage patch

Case report of exercise and statin-fibrate combination therapy-caused myopathy in a patient with metabolic syndrome: contradictions between the two main therapeutic pathways

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Lifestyle modifications including exercise are beneficial and fundamentally part of the therapy of metabolic syndrome, although in most of the cases medical interventions are also required to reach the target values in the laboratory parameters. Statin and fibrate combination therapy is considered to be safe and effective in dyslipidaemia and metabolic syndrome. However, increased physical activity can enhance the statin and fibrate-associated myopathy. Myositis and the rare but life-threatening rhabdomyolysis are causing a conflict between exercise and statin-fibrate therapy, which is yet to be resolved. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 43-year-old Caucasian man with metabolic syndrome who had the side-effect of exercise and drug-associated myositis. The patient had only transient moderate complaints and rhabdomyolysis could be avoided with the one-month creatine kinase control, a test which is not recommended routinely by the new guidelines. CONCLUSIONS: We would like to turn the spotlight on the possible complications of statin-fibrate therapy and exercise, when strict follow-up is recommended. In this condition high number of patients can be affected and the responsibility of general practitioners is accentuated
