This paper seeks to lay out certain critical reflections on social transformations, changes in memory politics and its representation in the Ukrainian museum narratives over the years of independence. In particular, it focuses on the challenges involved in constructing various forms of historical memory, it determines the ways of its representation in current museum narrative practices, illustrates memory politics controversy over the historical issues of the Holodomor of 1932 – 1933, World War II and the Holocaust and reveals the place they occupy in historical memory and museum narratives of different regions of Ukraine. Correlations between historical memory, identity and museum narratives of different regions of Ukraine are highlighted

Strain-Promoted Cycloaddition of Cyclopropenes with o-Quinones: A Rapid Click Reaction

    Get PDF
Novel click reactions are of continued interest in fields as diverse as bio-conjugation, polymer science and surface chemistry. Qualification as a proper 'click' reaction requires stringent criteria, including fast kinetics and high conversion, to be met. Herein, we report a novel strain-promoted cycloaddition between cyclopropenes and o-quinones in solution and on a surface. We demonstrate the 'click character' of the reaction in solution and on surfaces for both monolayer and polymer brush functionalization

Nitrosocarbonyl Hetero-Diels–Alder Cycloaddition: A New Tool for Conjugation

It is demonstrated that nitrosocarbonyl hetero-Diels-Alder chemistry is an efficient and versatile reaction that can be applied in macromolecular synthesis. Polyethylene glycol functionalized with a hydroxamic acid moiety undergoes facile coupling with cyclopentadiene-terminated polystyrene, through a copper-catalyzed as well as thermal hetero-Diels-Alder reaction. The mild and orthogonal methods used to carry out this reaction make it an attractive method for the synthesis of block copolymers. The resulting block copolymers were analyzed and characterized using GPC and NMR. The product materials could be subjected to thermal retro [4 + 2] cycloaddition, allowing for the liberation of the individual polymer chains and subsequent recycling of the diene-terminated polymers. © 2014 American Chemical Society

Cognitive Mapping Principles in Comprehension Strategies.

This study examined the differential effects of student generated questions as a function of training conditions. When self-questioning strategies are successfully mastered, they improve learning from text. However, most self-questioning strategies are based on "text mapping" principles-that is, they are guided by the structure of the information as presented. The utility of these strategies depends on the adequacy of text structure. The present study examined whether students can generate outlines based on generic information models and whether this "model mapping" approach has advantages over the use of text features as the basis of self-questioning. Specifically, the extent to which models of information structure influence the type of question generated and subsequent recall is examined. Two comprehension strategies--one based on "text mapping" principles, the other on "model mapping"--were evaluated with intact groups of middle school students. A placebo group, comprised of a r and omly assigned subset of each comparison group, was also employed. All subjects completed a st and ardized reading comprehension test, as well as self-questioning and free recall exercises at both pretest and posttest. Few meaningful between group differences were observed at posttest. Furthermore, large differences in pretest levels confounded the interpretation of between group differences in gains. Differential within group gains helped illuminate differences between comprehension strategies. A major implication of the present findings is that the respective strategies should be combined into an instructional package, rather than be considered as alternatives to one another. Although the comprehension test passages utilized were comparable in readability, they differed in rhetorical structure. These differences appeared to influence recall at pretest. These observations have methodological implications for studies employing free recall as a measure of comprehension.Ph.D.Educational psychologyUniversity of Michiganhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/161556/1/8720296.pd

Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a pregnancy-related liver disease that predominantly occurs during the third semester, featuring pruritus, increased seric bile acid levels and abnormal liver function tests. The incidence of ICP varies with geographical location, ethnicity and season. The etiology is not totally known, but it is thought to be multifactorial, with interaction of genetic, hormonal and environmental factors. ICP gains great clinical relevance because it is associated to an increased risk of fetal death, meconium-stained amniotic fluid, fetal distress, spontaneous and iatrogenic premature labour, cesarean sections and post-partum hemorrhage; it is common practice the induction of labour before the 37th week of pregnancy. The aim of this review is to further explore of this entity and its clinical relevance regarding fetal outcome

PSYCHOLINGUISTIC CHARACTERISTICS OF AUTISTS AND THEIR PROTOTYPES IN AMERICAN CINEMA DISCOURSE (BASED ON THE FILMS RAIN MAN AND THE REAL RAIN MAN)

The article focuses on the study of the main characteristics of people with autistic spectrum disorders. The comparison between the famous American savant, Kim Peek, and his prototype in the American cinema discourse has been made on the basis of the films Rain Man and The Real Rain Man. With the help of psychographological analysis, the speech of the man and his fictional prototype has been examined. The analysis showed that the difference between the two persons is indubitable, which can be explained by the fact that the savant syndrome was caused by different disorders
