    Study of ortho-to-paraexciton conversion in Cu2_2O by excitonic Lyman spectroscopy

    Using time-resolved 1s1s-2p2p excitonic Lyman spectroscopy, we study the orthoexciton-to-paraexcitons transfer, following the creation of a high density population of ultracold 1s1s orthoexcitons by resonant two-photon excitation with femtosecond pulses. An observed fast exciton-density dependent conversion rate is attributed to spin exchange between pairs of orthoexcitons. Implication of these results on the feasibility of BEC of paraexcitons in Cu2_2O is discussed

    An Anomalous Phase in the Relaxor Ferroelectric Pb(Zn1/3_{1/3}Nb2/3_{2/3})O3_3

    X-ray diffraction studies on a Pb(Zn1/3_{1/3}Nb2/3_{2/3})O3_3 (PZN) single crystal sample show the presence of two different structures. An outer-layer exists in the outer most \sim 10 to 50~μ\mum of the crystal, and undergoes a structural phase transition at the Curie temperature TC410T_C\approx410 K. The inside phase is however, very different. The lattice inside the crystal maintains a cubic unit cell, while ferroelectric polarization develops below TCT_C. The lattice parameter of the cubic unit cell remains virtually a constant, i.e., much less variations compared to that of a typical relaxor ferroelectric, in a wide temperature range of 15 K to 750 K. On the other hand, broadening of Bragg peaks and change of Bragg profile line-shapes in both longitudinal and transverse directions at TCT_C clearly indicate a structural phase transition occurring.Comment: to be submitted for PR

    Signatures of the excitonic memory effects in four-wave mixing processes in cavity polaritons

    We report the signatures of the exciton correlation effects with finite memory time in frequency domain degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) in semiconductor microcavity. By utilizing the polarization selection rules, we discriminate instantaneous, mean field interactions between excitons with the same spins, long-living correlation due to the formation of biexciton state by excitons with opposite spins, and short-memory correlation effects in the continuum of unbound two-exciton states. The DFWM spectra give us the relative contributions of these effects and the upper limit for the time of the exciton-exciton correlation in the unbound two-exciton continuum. The obtained results reveal the basis of the cavity polariton scattering model for the DFWM processes in high-Q GaAs microcavity.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur

    Quasi-degenerate self-trapping in one-dimensional charge transfer exciton

    The self-trapping by the nondiagonal particle-phonon interaction between two quasi-degenerate energy levels of excitonic system, is studied. We propose this is realized in charge transfer exciton, where the directions of the polarization give the quasi-degeneracy. It is shown that this mechanism, unlike the conventional diagonal one, allows a coexistence and resonance of the free and self-trapped states even in one-dimensional systems and a quantitative theory for the optical properties (light absorption and time-resolved luminescence) of the resonating states is presented. This theory gives a consistent resolution for the long-standing puzzles in quasi-one-dimensional compound A-PMDA.Comment: accepted to Phys. Rev. Letter

    Testing the validity of THz reflection spectra by dispersion relations

    Complex response function obtained in reflection spectroscopy at terahertz range is examined with algorithms based on dispersion relations for integer powers of complex reflection coefficient, which emerge as a powerful and yet uncommon tools in examining the consistency of the spectroscopic data. It is shown that these algorithms can be used in particular for checking the success of correction of the spectra by the methods of Vartiainen et al [1] and Lucarini et al [2] to remove the negative misplacement error in the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

    Detection and correction of the misplacement error in THz Spectroscopy by application of singly subtractive Kramers-Kronig relations

    In THz reflection spectroscopy the complex permittivity of an opaque medium is determined on the basis of the amplitude and of the phase of the reflected wave. There is usually a problem of phase error due to misplacement of the reference sample. Such experimental error brings inconsistency between phase and amplitude invoked by the causality principle. We propose a rigorous method to solve this relevant experimental problem by using an optimization method based upon singly subtractive Kramers-Kronig relations. The applicability of the method is demonstrated for measured data on an n-type undoped (100) InAs wafer in the spectral range from 0.5 up to 2.5 THz.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure

    Ground State of Relaxor Ferroelectric Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3Pb(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3

    High energy x-ray diffraction measurements on Pb(Zn1/3_{1/3}Nb2/3_{2/3})O3_3 (PZN) single crystals show that the system does not have a rhombohedral symmetry at room temperature as previously believed. The new phase (X) in the bulk of the crystal gives Bragg peaks similar to that of a nearly cubic lattice with a slight tetragonal distortion. The Bragg profile remains sharp with no evidence of size broadening due to the polar micro crystals (MC). However, in our preliminary studies of the skin, we have found the expected rhombohedral (R) phase as a surface state. On the other hand, studies on an electric-field poled PZN single crystal clearly indicate a rhombohedral phase at room temperature.Comment: 11 pages with 3 figure

    Population exposure to hazardous air quality due to the 2015 fires in Equatorial Asia.

    Vegetation and peatland fires cause poor air quality and thousands of premature deaths across densely populated regions in Equatorial Asia. Strong El-Niño and positive Indian Ocean Dipole conditions are associated with an increase in the frequency and intensity of wildfires in Indonesia and Borneo, enhancing population exposure to hazardous concentrations of smoke and air pollutants. Here we investigate the impact on air quality and population exposure of wildfires in Equatorial Asia during Fall 2015, which were the largest over the past two decades. We performed high-resolution simulations using the Weather Research and Forecasting model with Chemistry based on a new fire emission product. The model captures the spatio-temporal variability of extreme pollution episodes relative to space- and ground-based observations and allows for identification of pollution sources and transport over Equatorial Asia. We calculate that high particulate matter concentrations from fires during Fall 2015 were responsible for persistent exposure of 69 million people to unhealthy air quality conditions. Short-term exposure to this pollution may have caused 11,880 (6,153-17,270) excess mortalities.     Neutral-ionic phase transition : a thorough ab-initio study of TTF-CA

    The prototype compound for the neutral-ionic phase transition, namely TTF-CA, is theoretically investigated by first-principles density functional theory calculations. The study is based on three neutron diffraction structures collected at 40, 90 and 300 K (Le Cointe et al., Phys. Rev. B 51, 3374 (1995)). By means of a topological analysis of the total charge densities, we provide a very precise picture of intra and inter-chain interactions. Moreover, our calculations reveal that the thermal lattice contraction reduces the indirect band gap of this organic semi-conductor in the neutral phase, and nearly closes it in the vicinity of the transition temperature. A possible mechanism of the neutral-ionic phase transition is discussed. The charge transfer from TTF to CA is also derived by using three different technics.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, 7 table
