    A technique for improving readability of Forrester diagram in system dynamics

    We describe a three-pass algorithm for improving the readability of Forrester Diagram in system dynamics. The first pass converts Forrester Diagram to recurrent hierarchy. The second pass sorts the vertices on each level, with the goal of minimizing crossings. The third pass is a finite tuning of the layout that determines the horizontal positions of vertices. An illustrative example is given to verify the result.

    The development of athletes or players depends on two aspects: nature and nurture. The former is the talent and qualification of the players themselves, while the latter is the training that consumes human, material and financial resources. Take professional baseball players as an example. Matching the talents of players and referring to the relevant starting rules of the professional baseball league, when the up-and-coming players are first discovered, focused training are used on them. By doing so, the value of the players would be effectively enhanced and the players are helped to seek a better way out. This can form a virtuous circle: the pellets get quality players, and the players get better results. That is to say, strengthening the training for the shortcomings of the players with the potential of the starting players can avoid unnecessary training and huge training expenses behind them, and greatly reduce the risk of career, so that the players have higher security in their short career, and get a win-win-win situation. This study is aimed at the schedule information of the American Baseball League teams. Through feature selection of data mining, this study analyzes the main relationships and key differences between starting player and bench player of second baseman and shortstop in League of Nations teams. It is found that the on base percentage and speed of the infielders is an important ability indicator for the starting position; whereas, the second baseman emphasizes on the attack and the shortstop focuses on fielding. This feature is verified by comparing the opinions of experts and commentators.  Article visualizations

    Crude extracts of Solanum lyratum protect endothelial cells against oxidized low-density lipoprotein-induced injury by direct antioxidant action

    [[abstract]]Background: Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) is a proatherogenic molecule that accumulates in the vascular wall and contributes to the pathogenesis of vascular dysfunction early in the development of atherosclerosis. The whole plant of Solanum lyratum is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been used for centuries to treat cancer, tumors, and herpes. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms of its antioxidant effects are still largely unknown. This study tested the hypothesis that Solanum lyratum Thunberg extract (SLE) could block oxLDL-induced endothelial dysfunction in cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Possible mechanisms were explored. Methods: Antioxidative activities of SLE were assayed by measuring the scavenging of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical and the inhibition of copper-mediated or cell-mediated LDL oxidation. Production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the expression of adhesion molecules were evaluated in HUVECs after exposure to oxLDL and treatment with SLE. Several apoptotic signaling pathways were investigated. Results: SLE scavenged DPPH and also delayed the kinetics of LDL oxidation in a dose-dependent manner. SLE attenuated the level of oxLDL-induced ROS generation, diminished the expression of endothelial NO synthase (eNOS), and enhanced the expression of adhesion molecules (vascular cellular adhesion molecule-1, E-selectin, and monocyte chemotactic protein-1) and the adherence of monocytic THP-1 cells to HUVECs. OxLDL increased the concentration of intracellular calcium, disturbed the balance of the Bcl-2 protein family, destabilized the mitochondrial membrane potential, increased the amount of cytochrome c released into the cytosol, and increased the activation of caspase 3. These detrimental effects were ameliorated dose-dependently by SLE (P < .05). Conclusion: Crude extracts of Solanum lyratum protect against oxLDL-induced injury in endothelial cells by direct antioxidant action. (J Vasc Surg 2009;50:849-60.

    Effects of insulin replacement on cardiac apoptotic and survival pathways in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

    [[abstract]]Increased myocyte apoptosis in diabetic hearts has been previously reported. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of insulin on cardiac apoptotic, hypertrophic, and Survival pathways in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Forty-eight male Wistar rats at 8 weeks of age were randomly divided into control group (Control), STZ-induced (65 mg/kg STZ i.v.) Type I-like diabetic rats (DM), and DM rats with 4 IU insulin replacement (DI) for 4 and 8 weeks, respectively. The levels of protein involved in cardiac apoptotic, hypertrophic, and survival pathways were measured by Western blotting. Cardiac mitochondrial-dependent apoptotic pathways, Such as Bad, cytosolic cytochrome c, activated caspase 9 and 3, and calcineurin-nuclear factor activation transcription 3 (NFAT3) hypertrophic pathway in DM were increased compared to Control and attenuated in DI group after 8 weeks whereas those were not found after 4 weeks. Cardiac anti-apoptotic Bcl2 and phosphorylated-Bad were significantly decreased in DM group but not in DI group after 8 weeks. Insulin-like growth factor-I receptor (IGFIR), phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase (PI3K), and the protein kinase B (Akt) were significantly decreased in DM relative to Control and DI after 8 weeks whereas those were not found after 4 weeks. Insulin replacement not only prevents activation of the cardiac mitochondrial-dependent apoptotic pathway and calcineurin-related NFAT3 hypertrophic pathway in diabetes but it also enhances the cardiac insulin/IGFIR-PI3K-Akt survival pathway, all of which are attenuated with insulin therapeutic duration-dependent manners. The findings may provide possible diabetes-related apoptotic, hypertrophic, and survival pathways for potentially preventing cardiac abnormality in diabetes.     Spatial and Temporal Distribution of Trace Metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in Coastal Waters off the West Coast of Taiwan

    Surface water samples were collected along the west coast of Taiwan during two expedition cruises which represent periods of different regional climatic patterns. Information on hydrochemical parameters such as salinity, nutrients, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and Chlorophyll a concentrations were obtained, and dissolved and particulate trace metal (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) concentrations were determined. Spatial variations were observed and the differences were attributed to (1) influence of varying extents of terrestrial inputs from the mountainous rivers of Taiwan to the coast, and (2) urbanization and industrialization in different parts of the island. Geochemical processes such as desorption (Cd) and adsorption to sinking particles (Pb) also contributed to the variability of trace metal distributions in coastal waters. Results showed temporal variations in chemical characteristics in coastal waters as a consequence of prevailing monsoons. During the wet season when river discharges were higher, the transport of particulate metals was elevated due to increased sediment loads. During the dry season, lower river discharges resulted in a lesser extent of estuarine dilution effect for chemicals of anthropogenic sources, indicated by higher dissolved concentrations present in coastal waters associated with slightly higher salinity

    Performance-based Fire Safety Design for Existing Small-scale Hospitals

    AbstractThe new era of National Health Insurance in 2000 has had a significant impacted on the management and operation of smallscale hospitals. In response to social needs, and in order to survive under the new insurance system, some small-scale hospitals have transformed or established new Respiratory Care Wards by using existing hospital space. According to the 2009 statistics released by Department of Health, Executive Yuan, there are a total of 307 small-scale medical institutes which provide servicesunder 99 beds. Compared with other large-scale medical centers and general hospitals, small-scale hospitals cannot properly deal with safety management and response to emergency evacuation due to lack of facilities, equipment and human resources. Therefore, small-scale hospitals face a major challenge in emergency response once a fire has occurred. As a result of such a situation, this study has focused mainly on Respiratory Care Wards (RCW) where patients are unable to evacuate. It hopes to analyse the safety management, and emergency response in small-scale hospitals by means of understanding the space characteristics and fire risk. Through on-site surveys, we can understand the fire risk, space features, patient characteristics, facilities and equipment. With reference to the related regulations of hospital emergency management and response, we will propose some fire safety engineering approaches, such as refuge areas in horizontal evacuation and so-called “besieged zones” for “defense-in-place”, etc., to provide some alternative measures to improve fire safety for those small-scale hospitals

    High-Mobility Pentacene-Based Thin-Film Transistors With a Solution-Processed Barium Titanate Insulator

    Abstract—Pentacene-based organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) with solution-processed barium titanate (Ba1.2Ti0.8O3) as a gate insulator are demonstrated. The electrical properties of pentacene-based TFTs show a high field-effect mobility of 8.85 cm2 · V−1 · s−1, a low threshold voltage of −1.89 V, and a low subthreshold slope swing of 310 mV/decade. The chemical composition and binding energy of solution-processed barium titanate thin films are analyzed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The matching surface energy on the surface of the barium titanate thin film is 43.12 mJ · m−2, which leads to Stranski–Krastanov mode growth, and thus, high mobility is exhibited in pentacene-based TFTs.
