Partial Dynamical SU(3) Symmetry and the Nature of the Lowest K=0 Collective Excitation in Deformed Nuclei
We discuss the implications of partial dynamical SU(3) symmetry (PDS) for the
structure of the lowest K=0^{+} (K=0_2) collective excitation in deformed
nuclei. We consider an interacting boson model Hamiltonian whose ground and
gamma bands have good SU(3) symmetry while the K=0_2 band is mixed. It is shown
that the double-phonon components in the K=0_2 wave function arise from SU(3)
admixtures which, in turn, can be determined from absolute E2 rates connecting
the K=0_2 and ground bands. An explicit expression is derived for these
admixtures in terms of the ratio of K=0_2 and gamma bandhead energies. The
SU(3) PDS predictions are compared with existing data and with broken-SU(3)
calculations for ^{168}Er.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
Surgical Management of an Indian Spotted Eagle with Compound Fracture of Humerus
An adult Indian Spotted Eagle (Aquila hastata) was presented with a history of being unable to fly. Clinical examination and radiography revealed a compound oblique fracture in the distal humerus of the right wing. The fracture site was grossly contaminated and the fragments were necrosed. Hence, to save the life of the bird, the wing was amputated under general anaesthesia, induced and maintained with ketamine. The surgical intervention led to uncomplicated recovery of an eagle
Magnetoresistance in ordered and disordered double perovskite oxide, SrFeMoO
We have prepared crystallographically ordered and disorder specimens of the
double perovskite, SrFeMoO and investigated their magnetoresistance
behaviour. The extent of ordering between the Fe and Mo sites in the two
samples is determined by Rietveld analysis of powder x-ray diffraction patterns
and reconfirmed by M\"{o}ssbauer studies. While the ordered sample exhibits the
sharp low-field response, followed by moderate changes in the magnetoresistance
at higher fields, the disordered sample is characterised by the absence of the
spectacular low-field response. We argue that the low field response depends
crucially on the half-metallic ferromagnetism, while the high-field response
follows from the overall magnetic nature of the sample, even in absence of the

Retrieval of Pharyngeal Foreign Body Through Oral Approach in Three Dogs
Three dogs aged between 2 to 4 years old were presented to the Referral Veterinary Polyclinic, Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar with clinical signs of anorexia, hypersalivation and repeated attempts at swallowing. Two cases showed shaking of head, pawing at the mouth and rubbing the head against wall, while in one case behavioral signs of depression were observed. Clinical examination and lateral plain radiograph of head and neck revealed radio opaque foreign body in the pharynx of all the animals. The foreign bodies were retrieved through the oral approach under general anaesthesia. This clinical paper reports the successful management of pharyngeal foreign bodies through oral approach using long curved artery forceps without any complication
Standardisation of RTS beverage from reconstituted cashew apple-based blended juice powder along with Sugandi
Cashew has commercial value for its nut and peduncle (false fruit), known as cashew apple. Requirements of consumers considering convenience, food safety, health benefits and sensory quality have increased demand for fruit juices, but most consumers don’t get time for the ready to use products. Instant juice powders can meet consumer requirements being cheap to transport and with prolonged shelf life. Then the blended juice was mixed with maltodextrin @15 per cent, i.e., 15 g for 100 mL of blended juice by proper homogenisation. The roots of the sugandi (Swallow root - Decalepsis hamiltonii) were collected, cleaned thoroughly and discarded the central white portion of the roots. Among the blended juice treatment combinations, the highest pH of 3.45 was recorded in B3 (75% cashew apple juice + 25% pineapple juice powder at 150°C inlet temperature with a flow rate of 10 mL min-1). The ready-to-serve (RTS) beverage, along with sugandi stored under refrigerated condition, were free from microbial proliferation till the end of the storage period (60th day of storage), indicating its fitness for consumption with maximum flavour, taste and overall acceptability
Quadrupole shape invariants in the interacting boson model
In terms of the Interacting Boson Model, shape invariants for the ground
state, formed by quadrupole moments up to sixth order, are studied in the
dynamical symmetry limits and, for the first time, over the whole structural
range of the IBM-1. The results are related to the effective deformation
parameters and their fluctuations in the geometrical model. New signatures that
can distinguish vibrator and gamma-soft rotor structures, and one that is

Oscillations of a solid sphere falling through a wormlike micellar fluid
We present an experimental study of the motion of a solid sphere falling
through a wormlike micellar fluid. While smaller or lighter spheres quickly
reach a terminal velocity, larger or heavier spheres are found to oscillate in
the direction of their falling motion. The onset of this instability correlates
with a critical value of the velocity gradient scale
s. We relate this condition to the known complex rheology of wormlike
micellar fluids, and suggest that the unsteady motion of the sphere is caused
by the formation and breaking of flow-induced structures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
The COVID-19 Pandemic: Reflections of Science, Person, and Challenge in Academic Research Settings
In spring of 2021, the Society on NeuroImmune Pharmacology (SNIP) organized a virtual workshop on the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The daylong event’s fourth and final symposium, “Well-being and reflections,” offered a glimpse at the pandemic’s impact on the lives of our scientists and educators. This manuscript includes a brief summary of the symposium, a transcription of our incoming president Dr. Santosh Kumar’s lecture, titled “Intervention and improved well-being of basic science researchers during the COVID-19 era: a case study,” and the panel discussion that followed, “Reflection and sharing,” featuring Drs. Jean M. Bidlack, Sylvia Fitting, Santhi Gorantla, Maria Cecilia G. Marcondes, Loyda M. Melendez, and Ilker K. Sariyer. The conclusion of this manuscript includes comments from SNIP’s president Dr. Sulie L. Chang and our Chief Editor, Dr. Howard E. Gendelman. Drs. Single Spin Asymmetry in Polarized Proton-Proton Elastic Scattering at GeV
We report a high precision measurement of the transverse single spin
asymmetry at the center of mass energy GeV in elastic
proton-proton scattering by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The was measured
in the four-momentum transfer squared range \GeVcSq, the region of a significant interference between the
electromagnetic and hadronic scattering amplitudes. The measured values of
and its -dependence are consistent with a vanishing hadronic spin-flip
amplitude, thus providing strong constraints on the ratio of the single
spin-flip to the non-flip amplitudes. Since the hadronic amplitude is dominated
by the Pomeron amplitude at this , we conclude that this measurement
addresses the question about the presence of a hadronic spin flip due to the
Pomeron exchange in polarized proton-proton elastic scattering.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
