Single Photons on Pseudo-Demand from Stored Parametric Down-Conversion
We describe the results of a parametric down-conversion experiment in which
the detection of one photon of a pair causes the other photon to be switched
into a storage loop. The stored photon can then be switched out of the loop at
a later time chosen by the user, providing a single photon for potential use in
a variety of quantum information processing applications. Although the stored
single photon is only available at periodic time intervals, those times can be
chosen to match the cycle time of a quantum computer by using pulsed
down-conversion. The potential use of the storage loop as a photonic quantum
memory device is also discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 7 Figs., RevTe

Human Adult Neurogenesis: Evidence and Remaining Questions
Renewed discussion about whether or not adult neurogenesis exists in the human hippocampus, and the nature and strength of the supporting evidence, has been reignited by two prominently published reports with opposite conclusions. Here, we summarize the state of the field and argue that there is currently no reason to abandon the idea that adult-generated neurons make important functional contributions to neural plasticity and cognition across the human lifespan
Dynamic generation of maximally entangled photon multiplets by adiabatic passage
The adiabatic passage scheme for quantum state synthesis, in which atomic
Zeeman coherences are mapped to photon states in an optical cavity, is extended
to the general case of two degenerate cavity modes with orthogonal
polarization. Analytical calculations of the dressed-state structure and Monte
Carlo wave-function simulations of the system dynamics show that, for a
suitably chosen cavity detuning, it is possible to generate states of photon
multiplets that are maximally entangled in polarization. These states display
nonclassical correlations of the type described by Greenberger, Horne, and
Zeilinger (GHZ). An experimental scheme to realize a GHZ measurement using
coincidence detection of the photons escaping from the cavity is proposed. The
correlations are found to originate in the dynamics of the adiabatic passage
and persist even if cavity decay and GHZ state synthesis compete on the same
time scale. Beyond entangled field states, it is also possible to generate
entanglement between photons and the atom by using a different atomic
transition and initial Zeeman state.Comment: 22 pages (RevTeX), including 23 postscript figures. To be published

Applying SNP marker technology in the cacao breeding programme in Ghana
In this investigation 45 parental cacao plants and five progeny derived
from the parental stock studied were genotyped using six SNP markers to
determine off-types or mislabeled clones and to authenticate crosses
made in the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG) breeding
programme. Investigation was based on the 5\u2019 nuclease SNPassay
using Illustra Hot Start mix Ready-To-Go PCR strips and BioTek
FLx800TBP Fluorescence Microplate Reader. In a group of six cacao
plants labeled as PA150 clones and another five labeled as Pound7, one
clone in each group was unambiguously determined as off-type or
mislabeled. Similarly, in a cohort of 23 PA7 "clones", four genotypes
were differentiated. Cross-checking the fidelity of five progeny from
the parental stock under study, it was established that no errors were
made in the crossing. The most significant outcome of this study,
however, was that out of the four categories of 23 PA7 candidate
parental trees only one category can be comparable to the reference
clone in the International Cacao Germplasm collection, Trinidad
(ICG,T); thus informing the need for further work to find the correct
clone among these for the breeding programme. It was thus concluded
that thissimple yet cutting-edge genotyping procedure can be used in
applied cocoa breeding programmes in a cocoa producing country. This
work represents a first step in the genotypic characterisation of the
CRIG germplasm collection and Seed Gardens.Au cours de cette recherche, 45 plants de cacao parentaux et 5

Variety of Methodological Approach in Economics
It has been argued by some that the distinction between orthodox economics and heterodox economics does not fit the growing variety in economic theory, unified by a common methodological approach. On the other hand, it remains a central characteristic of heterodox economics that it does not share this methodological approach, but rather represents a range of alternative methodological approaches. The paper explores the evidence, and arguments, for variety in economics at different levels, and a range of issues which arise. This requires in turn a discussion of the meaning of variety in economics at the different levels of reality, methodology, method and theory. It is concluded that there is scope for more, rather than less, variety in economic methodologies, as well as within methodologies. Further, if variety is not to take the form of âanything goesâ, then critical discussion by economists of different approaches to economics, and of variety itself, is required

Physics with the KLOE-2 experiment at the upgraded DANE
Investigation at a --factory can shed light on several debated issues
in particle physics. We discuss: i) recent theoretical development and
experimental progress in kaon physics relevant for the Standard Model tests in
the flavor sector, ii) the sensitivity we can reach in probing CPT and Quantum
Mechanics from time evolution of entangled kaon states, iii) the interest for
improving on the present measurements of non-leptonic and radiative decays of
kaons and eta/eta mesons, iv) the contribution to understand the
nature of light scalar mesons, and v) the opportunity to search for narrow
di-lepton resonances suggested by recent models proposing a hidden dark-matter
sector. We also report on the physics in the continuum with the
measurements of (multi)hadronic cross sections and the study of gamma gamma
processes.Comment: 60 pages, 41 figures; added affiliation for one of the authors; added
