    Convergence of statistical moments of particle density time series in scrape-off layer plasmas

    Particle density fluctuations in the scrape-off layer of magnetically confined plasmas, as measured by gas-puff imaging or Langmuir probes, are modeled as the realization of a stochastic process in which a superposition of pulses with a fixed shape, an exponential distribution of waiting times and amplitudes represents the radial motion of blob-like structures. With an analytic formulation of the process at hand, we derive expressions for the mean-squared error on estimators of sample mean and sample variance as a function of sample length, sampling frequency, and the parameters of the stochastic process. % Employing that the probability distribution function of a particularly relevant shot noise process is given by the gamma distribution, we derive estimators for sample skewness and kurtosis, and expressions for the mean-squared error on these estimators. Numerically generated synthetic time series are used to verify the proposed estimators, the sample length dependency of their mean-squared errors, and their performance. We find that estimators for sample skewness and kurtosis based on the gamma distribution are more precise and more accurate than common estimators based on the method of moments.Comment: 31 pages, 10 figure

    Intermittent fluctuations in the Alcator C-Mod scrape-off layer for ohmic and high confinement mode plasmas

    Plasma fluctuations in the scrape-off layer of the Alcator C-Mod tokamak in ohmic and high confinement modes have been analyzed using gas puff imaging data. In all cases investigated, the time series of emission from a single spatially-resolved view into the gas puff are dominated by large-amplitude bursts, attributed to blob-like filament structures moving radially outwards and poloidally. There is a remarkable similarity of the fluctuation statistics in ohmic plasmas and in edge localized mode-free and enhanced D-alpha high confinement mode plasmas. Conditionally averaged wave forms have a two-sided exponential shape with comparable temporal scales and asymmetry, while the burst amplitudes and the waiting times between them are exponentially distributed. The probability density functions and the frequency power spectral densities are self-similar for all these confinement modes. These results are strong evidence in support of a stochastic model describing the plasma fluctuations in the scrape-off layer as a super-position of uncorrelated exponential pulses. Predictions of this model are in excellent agreement with experimental measurements in both ohmic and high confinement mode plasmas. The stochastic model thus provides a valuable tool for predicting fluctuation-induced plasma-wall interactions in magnetically confined fusion plasmas.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure

    Comparison between mirror Langmuir probe and gas puff imaging measurements of intermittent fluctuations in the Alcator C-Mod scrape-off layer

    Statistical properties of the scrape-off layer (SOL) plasma fluctuations are studied in ohmically heated plasmas in the Alcator C-Mod tokamak. For the first time, plasma fluctuations as well as parameters that describe the fluctuations are compared across measurements from a mirror Langmuir probe (MLP) and from gas-puff imaging (GPI) that sample the same plasma discharge. This comparison is complemented by an analysis of line emission time-series data, synthesized from the MLP electron density and temperature measurements. The fluctuations observed by the MLP and GPI typically display relative fluctuation amplitudes of order unity together with positively skewed and flattened probability density functions. Such data time series are well described by an established stochastic framework which model the data as a superposition of uncorrelated, two-sided exponential pulses. The most important parameter of the process is the intermittency parameter, {\gamma} = {\tau}d / {\tau}w where {\tau}d denotes the duration time of a single pulse and {\tau}w gives the average waiting time between consecutive pulses. Here we show, using a new deconvolution method, that these parameters can be consistently estimated from different statistics of the data. We also show that the statistical properties of the data sampled by the MLP and GPI diagnostic are very similar. Finally, a comparison of the GPI signal to the synthetic line-emission time series suggests that the measured emission intensity can not be explained solely by a simplified model which neglects neutral particle dynamics

    The expression pattern of dormancy-associated genes in multiple life-history stages in the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis

    Rotifer resting eggs retain their viability for several decades in a non-desiccated form and are of interest in discerning the processes associated with dormancy, since in most organisms this phenomenon is linked with desiccation. The expression pattern of candidate genes with biological functions associated with dormancy in several other organisms was examined in rotifers. High-throughput transcriptome profiling revealed three patterns of gene expression in resting eggs: (1) relatively highly expressed genes coding for LEA proteins and putative paralogs of the small heat shock protein family (shsp); (2) genes coding for ferritin (ferr), glutathione-6-transferase (gts) and HSP70, where some of the putative gene paralogs of these families show relatively high expression levels and other putative paralogs show relatively low expression levels in resting eggs; and (3) genes with relatively low expression levels in resting eggs, for trehalose-6-phosphate synthase (tps), fatty-acid binding proteins (fab) and of lipoprotein lipase (lpl) and the aquaporins gene family (aqp). Changes in the expression pattern of some members of putative gene families occurred during the obligatory dormant period of resting eggs. A transition was observed from an expression pattern of diapausing embryos to an expression pattern of amictic females, during hatching. Differences were also found in the expression pattern in the different types of females, especially in those carrying resting eggs, and in males compared with females. These results suggest putative functional significance to genes associated with dormancy in non-desiccated resting eggs. It could also be proposed that their occurrence in resting eggs is developmentally programmed to facilitate survival in case of desiccation

    The sonographic digital portfolio: a longitudinal ultrasound image tracking program

    BACKGROUND: Ultrasonography (US) at the medical student level is developing. As clinical skills and simulation centers expand, US equipment miniaturizes, and more students are exposed to ultrasound; a digital portfolio comprised of US images and videos may be useful in demonstrating experience and possibly competency. METHODS: Medical students participated in US curricula consisting of didactics and hands-on training. From 1 July 2006 to 30 June 2008, student images and videos were saved. Total images and videos were evaluated and catalogued. RESULTS: A total of 10,074 images and 1,227 videos were saved during the 2-year period. For the academic year 2006 to 2007, 159 medical students obtained 3,641 of the images (84.9%) and 270 of the videos (86.0%). First year students obtained 778 images and 20 videos; second year students, 1,174 images and 64 videos; third year students, 211 images and 20 videos; and fourth year students, 1,478 images and 166 videos. For the academic year 2007 to 2008, 222 medical students obtained 4,340 images (75%) and 619 videos (67.8%). First year students obtained 624 images and 109 videos; second year students, 555 images and 81 videos; third year students, 132 images and 14 videos; and fourth year students, 3,029 images and 415 videos. CONCLUSIONS: The ultrasound digital portfolio allows medical students to collate and document their ultrasound experience. Currently, there is no requirement for ultrasound training, documentation of competency, or minimum numbers of US exams for medical education. The ultrasound digital portfolio may be a useful tool in documenting ultrasound proficiency

    A burst from the direction of UZ Fornacis with XMM-Newton

    The XMM-Newton pointing towards the magnetic cataclysmic variable UZ For finds the source to be a factor > 10^3 fainter than previous EXOSAT and ROSAT observations. The source was not detected for the majority of a 22 ksec exposure with the EPIC cameras, suggesting that the accretion rate either decreased, or stopped altogether. However a 1.1 ksec burst was detected from UZ For during the observation. Spectral fits favour optically thin, kT = 4.4 keV thermal emission. Detection of the burst by the on-board Optical Monitor indicates that this was most probably an accretion event. The 0.1-10 keV luminosity of 2.1 x 10^30 erg/s is typical for accretion shock emission from high state polars and would result from the potential energy release of ~ 10^16 g of gas.     Diagnostic value of diffusion-weighted STEAM-MRI in ischemic stroke

    Introduction: Diffusion-weighted imaging in stimulated echo acquisition mode (STEAM-DWI) is an interesting alternative with less susceptibility artifacts compared to the most commonly used diffusion-weighted echo-planar imaging (EPI-DWI). Sensitivity and specificity of a novel STEAM-DWI, described by Merrem et al. 2017 [1], were assessed in patients with ischemic stroke. Methods: EPI- and STEAM-DWIs were performed in patients with suspected subacute stroke between 01 July 2019 and 30 June 2020 using 3-T MRI. Three neuroradiologists independently and separately rated STEAM-DWI images with respect to (i) signs of an acute/subacute stroke, (ii) the number, size and localization of infarctions and, (iii) the presence of artifacts. Results: In 55 (23 right, 23 left, 9 both hemispheres) of 85 patients a subacute stroke was confirmed using EPI- DWI. The cerebral vascular territories were affected as follows: anterior cerebral artery 8 %, middle cerebral artery 48 %, posterior cerebral artery 27 %, brainstem 7 %, cerebellum 10 %. In 53 of 55 (96 %) cases the stroke was detected by usage of STEAM-DWI, in 35 of 37 patients microembolic events were noticed (95 %). Results showed a sensitivity and specificity of 100 % (70/70) for major infarcts (>9 mm2 in-plane) and a sensitivity of up to 94 % (121/129) for detecting subacute microembolic lesions. No susceptibility artifacts were noticed in STEAM-DWI. Conclusion: Compared to standard EPI-DWI, STEAM-DWI offers a more robust alternative for diagnosing subacute strokes in areas affected by susceptibility artifacts

    A genome-wide association study on hematopoietic stem cell transplantation reveals novel genomic loci associated with transplant outcomes

Methods: We performed a genome wide association study (GWAS) to identify genes associated with survival/mortality, relapse, and severe graft-versus-host disease (sGvHD), fitting proportional hazard and subdistributional models to data of n=1,392 recipients of European ancestry from three centres. Results: The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs17154454, intronic to the neuronal growth guidant semaphorin 3C gene (SEMA3C), was genome-wide significantly associated with event-free survival (p=7.0x10-8) and sGvHD (p=7.5x10-8). Further associations were detected for SNPs in the Paxillin gene (PXN) with death without prior relapse or sGvHD, as well as for SNPs of the Plasmacytoma Variant Translocation 1 gene (PVT1, a long non-coding RNA gene), the Melanocortin 5 Receptor (MC5R) gene and the WW Domain Containing Oxidoreductase gene (WWOX), all associated with the occurrence of sGvHD. Functional considerations support the observed associations. Discussion: Thus, new genes were identified, potentially influencing the outcome of HSCT

    HS 2237+8154 : on the onset of mass transfer or entering the period gap?

    We report follow-up observations of a new white dwarf/red dwarf binary HS 2237+8154, identified as a blue variable star from the Hamburg Quasar Survey. Ellipsoidal modulation observed in the R band as well as the radial velocity variations measured from time-resolved spectroscopy determine the orbital period to be Porb = 178.10 +- 0.08 min. The optical spectrum of HS 2237+8154 is well described by a combination of a Teff = 11500 +- 1500 K white dwarf (assuming log g = 8) and a dM 3.5 +- 0.5 secondary star. The distance implied from the flux scaling factors of both stellar components is d = 105 +- 25 pc. Combining the constraints obtained from the radial velocity of the secondary and from the ellipsoidal modulation, we derive a binary inclination of i = 50-70 and stellar masses of and Mwd = 0.47-0.67 M and Msec = 0.2-0.4 M. All observations imply that the secondary star must be nearly Roche-lobe filling. Consequently, HS 2237+8154 may be either a pre-cataclysmic variable close to the start of mass transfer, or - considering its orbital period - a cataclysmic variable that terminated mass transfer and entered the period gap, or a hibernating nova
