RTS2 - the Remote Telescope System

RTS2 is an open source observatory manager. It was written from scratch in the C++ language, with portability and modularity in mind. Its driving requirements originated from quick follow-ups of Gamma Ray Bursts. After some years of development it is now used to carry tasks it was originally not intended to carry. This article presents the current development status of the RTS2 code. PROSTY CZY ARCHAICZY: NOWY CZESKI KODEKS CYWILNY PŁYNIE POD PRĄD

The article presents the discussion on the wording of the new Civil Code of the Czech Republic which becomes effective on January 1, 2014. Some critics claim that the Code contains many newly coined or re-introduced terms which are unknown to the general public and may even feel archaic. Inspired by this debate, a survey was carried out in which a group of students was asked to assess the perceived familiarity with ten terms selected from the new Code and also mark the terms with respect to their perceived stylistic features. All the terms had been analysed with respect to their relative frequency in various text types using the Czech National Corpus. Only one term was assessed as known by more than 40% of the subjects. The same portion of the subjects marked six terms as archaic and five terms as strangely formed. The results show that the debate on the wording was justified. Nevertheless, the requirement for accessibility of legal documents to the general public should be seen with due consideration to various functions, situations and contexts in which individual genres and text types are used.Język nowego czeskiego kodeksu cywilnego, który wejdzie w życie w styczniu 2014, wywołał w Czechach dyskusję. Niektórzy krytycy twierdzą, że kodeks ten zawiera wiele nowo utworzonych lub wprowadzonych ponownie terminów, które są powszechnie niezrozumiałe i mogą brzmieć archaicznie. Debata ta dała powód do przeprowadzenia badania, w którym poproszono studentów o określenie stopnia znajomości wybranych terminów z nowego kodeksu oraz określenie ich cech stylistycznych. Wszytkie terminy zostały przeanalizowane pod kątem częstotliwości występowania przy użyciu Narodowego Korpusu Języka Czeskiego. Tylko jeden z badanych terminów został oceniony jako zrozumiały przez 40% respondentów. Taka sama liczba badanych określiła sześć terminów jako archaiczne i pięć jako utworzone w dziwny sposób. Lexikální prostředky britské a americké angličtiny v jazyce českých studentů angličtiny

The thesis aims to provide new information on lexical dialectal variation amongst EFL students. The theoretical part focuses on the description of lexical dialectal variation alongside with the scrutiny of British and American English and their "language power" throughout the last century. The globalised world favours the use of American English whilst academic institutions still support the use of British English. The practical part consists of three questionnaires whose answers will shed light on the non-natives' use of English and their dialectal preference of English - the basis of the "Euro-English" dialect - through lexeme choice. The questionnaires also consist of sociological part which will be used to find the motives behind both the general level of lexical dialectal preference (the total number of lexemes of each dialect) and the specific level (the number of lexemes of each dialect in each individual sentence). The results have shown that there are three notions that have impact on students' lexical dialectal choices. Subjects who get most of their English input from school tend to prefer BrE lexical dialectal variants whilst subjects who rank internet and social media as the most impactful resource for their English tend to use more AmE lexical dialectal variants. The third notion that...Cílem této práce je poskytnout nové informace ohledně lexikální nářeční variace u studentů angličtiny jako cizího jazyka. Teoretická část je zaměřena na popis lexikální nářeční variace spolu s výzkumem "jazykové moci" u britské a americké angličtiny v průběhu posledního století. Zatímco globalizovaný svět upřednostňuje užívání americké angličtiny, akademické instituce stále podporují užívaní angličtiny britské. Praktická část je složena z odpovědí na tři dotazníky, jež by měly pomoci vysvětlit používání angličtiny u nerodilých mluvčí a jejich nářeční preferenci angličtiny - která je základem tzv. Euro-anglického nářečí - skrze jejich volbu lexému. Tyto dotazníky také obsahovaly sociologickou část, která bude využita pro zjištění motivů, jež stojí za lexikální preferencí jednoho z již zmíněných nářečí, a to jak na obecné úrovni (celkové užití lexémů u každého nářečí), tak na úrovni specifické (užití lexémů u každého nářečí pro každou jednotlivou větu). Výsledky ukázaly, že existují tři kategorie, které mají vliv na volbu lexikální nářeční varianty. BART 2001–2004: An intelligent robotic observatory

BART is a robotic observatory located at the Astronomical Institute in Ondrejov, Czech Republic. It is a relatively low-cost (25 cm + two wide-field lenses) device developed for rapid follow-ups of GRBs. Since 2001 when it started to observe, it has done several such observations. Meanwhile, photometric monitoring tasks are performed, using an intelligent selection algorithm. Not only the telescope is automatic, the entire observatory does not require human presence: system prepares the schedule, observes, registers the images and stores them into database without human intervention: human assistance is reduced to maintenance and weather checking. BART is a primary developing platform for RTS2, the robotic telescope operation software, which allows for unattended observation as well as control of the entire observatory
