Energy averages and fluctuations in the decay out of superdeformed bands
We derive analytic formulae for the energy average (including the energy
average of the fluctuation contribution) and variance of the intraband decay
intensity of a superdeformed band. Our results may be expressed in terms of
three dimensionless variables: , ,
and . Here is
the spreading width for the mixing of a superdeformed (SD) state with the
normally deformed (ND) states whose spin is the same as 's. The
have mean level spacing and mean electromagnetic decay width
whilst has electromagnetic decay width .
The average decay intensity may be expressed solely in terms of the variables
and or, analogously to statistical
nuclear reaction theory, in terms of the transmission coefficients and
describing transmission from the to the SD band via and
to lower ND states.
The variance of the decay intensity, in analogy with Ericson's theory of
cross section fluctuations depends on an additional variable, the correlation
length
\Gamma_N/(\Gamma_S+\Gamma^{\downarrow})=\frac{d}{2\pi}T_N/(\Gamma_S+\Gamma^{\d
ownarrow}). This suggests that analysis of an experimentally obtained variance
could yield the mean level spacing as does analysis of the cross section
autocorrelation function in compound nuclear reactions.

Identification of compounds responsible for the anthelmintic effects of chicory (Cichorium intybus) by molecular networking and bio-guided fractionation
10 páginas, 7 figuras.Increasing resistance towards anthelmintic drugs has necessitated the search for alternative treatments for the control of gastrointestinal nematode parasites. Animals fed on chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), a temperate (pasture) crop, have reduced parasite burdens, hence making C. intybus a potentially useful source for novel anthelmintic compounds or a diet-based preventive/therapeutic option. Here, we utilized in vitro bioassays with the parasitic nematode Ascaris suum and molecular networking techniques with five chicory cultivars to identify putative active compounds. Network analysis predicted sesquiterpene lactones (SL) as the most likely group of anthelmintic compounds. Further bioassay-guided fractionation supported these predictions, and isolation of pure compounds demonstrated that the SL 8-deoxylactucin (8-DOL) is the compound most strongly associated with anti-parasitic activity. Furthermore, we showed that 8-DOL acts in a synergistic combination with other SL to exert the anti-parasitic effects. Finally, we established that chicory-derived extracts also showed activity against two ruminant nematodes (Teladorsagia circumcincta and Cooperia oncophora) in in vitro assays. Shape coexistence near neutron number N=20: first identification of the E0 decay from the deformed first excited J(pi)=0(+) state in Mg-30
The 1789 keV state in Mg-30 was identified as the first excited 0(+) state via its electric monopole (E0) transition to the ground state. The measured small value of rho(2)(E0,0(2)(+)-> 0(1)(+))=(26.2 +/- 7.5)x10(-3) implies within a two-level model a small mixing of competing configurations with largely different intrinsic quadrupole deformation near the neutron shell closure at N=20. Axially symmetric configuration mixing calculations identify the ground state of Mg-30 to be based on neutron configurations below the N=20 shell closure, while the excited 0(+) state mainly consists of two neutrons excited into the nu 1f(7/2) orbital. The experimental result represents the first case where an E0 back decay from a strongly deformed second to the normal deformed first nuclear potential minimum well has been unambiguously identified, thus directly proving shape coexistence at the borderline of the much-debated "island of inversion
High-spin States in \u3csup\u3e191, 193\u3c/sup\u3eAu and \u3csup\u3e192\u3c/sup\u3ePt: Evidence for Oblate Deformation and Triaxial Shapes
High-spin states of 191, 193Au and 192Pt have been populated in the 186W(11B, xn) and 186W(11B, p4n) reactions, respectively, at a beam energy of 68 MeV and their γ decay was studied using the YRAST Ball detector array at the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory at Yale University. The level scheme of 193Au has been extended up to Iπ = 55/2+. New transitions were observed also in 191Au and 192Pt. Particle-plus-Triaxial-Rotor (PTR) and Total Routhian Surface (TRS) calculations were performed to determine the equilibrium deformations of the Au isotopes. The predictions for oblate deformations in these nuclei are in agreement with the experimental data. Development of nonaxial shapes is discussed within the framework of the PTR model
High-resolution study of 0+ and 2+ excitations in 168Er with the (p,t) reaction
Excited states in the deformed nucleus 168Er have been studied with high-energy resolution, in the (p, t )
reaction, with the Munich Q3D spectrograph. A number of 25 excited 0+ states (four tentative) and 63 2+ states
have been assigned up to 4.0 MeV excitation energy. This unusually rich characterization of the 0+ and 2+ states
in a deformed nucleus, close to a complete level scheme, offers a unique opportunity to check, in detail, models
of nuclear structure that incorporate many excitation modes. A comparison of the experimental data is made with
two such models: the quasiparticle-phonon model (QPM), and the projected shell model (PSM). The PSM wave
functions appear to contain fewer correlations than those of the QPM and than required by the data
Triaxial Deformation and Nuclear Shape Transition in \u3csup\u3e192\u3c/sup\u3eAu
Background: Nuclei in the A≈190 mass region show gradual shape changes from prolate through nonaxial deformed shapes and ultimately towards spherical shapes as the Pb region is approached. Exploring how this shape evolution occurs will help us understand the evolution of collectivity in this region.
Purpose: The level scheme of the 192Au nucleus in A ≈ 190 region was studied in order to deduce its deformations.
Methods: High-spin states of 192Au have been populated in the 186W(11B, 5n) reaction at a beam energy of 68 MeV and their γ decay was studied using the YRAST Ball detector array at the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory (WNSL), Yale University.
Results: Based on double and triple γ-ray coincidence data the level scheme of 192Au has been extended up to Iπ = 32+ at an excitation energy of ∼6 MeV.
Conclusion: The results are discussed in the framework of pairing and deformation self-consistent total Routhian surface (TRS) and cranked shell model (CSM) calculations. The comparison of the experimental observations with the calculations indicates that this nucleus takes a nonaxial shape similar to other Au nuclei in this region
Exploring the anomaly in the interaction cross section and matter radius of 23O
New measurements of the interaction cross sections of 22,23O at 900A MeV
performed at the GSI, Darmstadt are reported that address the unsolved puzzle
of the large cross section previously observed for 23O. The matter radii for
these oxygen isotopes extracted through a Glauber model analysis are in good
agreement with the new predictions of the ab initio coupled-cluster theory
reported here. They are consistent with a 22O+neutron description of 23O as
