Application of Minimal Subtraction Renormalization to Crossover Behavior near the He Liquid-Vapor Critical Point
Parametric expressions are used to calculate the isothermal susceptibility,
specific heat, order parameter, and correlation length along the critical
isochore and coexistence curve from the asymptotic region to crossover region.
These expressions are based on the minimal-subtraction renormalization scheme
within the model. Using two adjustable parameters in these
expressions, we fit the theory globally to recently obtained experimental
measurements of isothermal susceptibility and specific heat along the critical
isochore and coexistence curve, and early measurements of coexistence curve and
light scattering intensity along the critical isochore of He near its
liquid-vapor critical point. The theory provides good agreement with these
experimental measurements within the reduced temperature range
Velocity-selective sublevel resonance of atoms with an array of current-carrying wires
Resonance transitions between the Zeeman sublevels of optically-polarized Rb
atoms traveling through a spatially periodic magnetic field are investigated in
a radio-frequency (rf) range of sub-MHz. The atomic motion induces the
resonance when the Zeeman splitting is equal to the frequency at which the
moving atoms feel the magnetic field oscillating. Additional temporal
oscillation of the spatially periodic field splits a motion-induced resonance
peak into two by an amount of this oscillation frequency. At higher oscillation
frequencies, it is more suitable to consider that the resonance is mainly
driven by the temporal field oscillation, with its velocity-dependence or
Doppler shift caused by the atomic motion through the periodic field. A
theoretical description of motion-induced resonance is also given, with
emphasis on the translational energy change associated with the internal
transition.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, final versio
Basic Parameters and Some Precision Tests of the Standard Model
We present a review of the masses (except for neutrino masses) and
interaction strengths in the standard model. Special emphasis is put on
quantities that have been determined with significantly improved precision in
the last few years. In particular, a number of determinations of and
the electromagnetic coupling on the , are
presented and their implications for the Higgs mass discussed; the best
prediction that results for this last quantity being Besides this, we also discuss a few extra precision tests of the
standard model: the electron magnetic moment and dipole moment, and the muon
magnetic moment.Comment: Plain TeX file. 6figure
Faster Correlation Attack on Bluetooth Keystream Generator E0
Abstract. We study both distinguishing and key-recovery attacks against E0, the keystream generator used in Bluetooth by means of correlation. First, a powerful computation method of correlations is formulated by a recursive expression, which makes it easier to calculate correlations of the finite state machine output sequences up to 26 bits for E0 and allows us to verify the two known correlations to be the largest for the first time. Second, we apply the concept of convolution to the analysis of the distinguisher based on all correlations, and propose an efficient distinguisher due to the linear dependency of the largest correlations. Last, we propose a novel maximum likelihood decoding algorithm based on fast Walsh transform to recover the closest codeword for any linear code of dimension L and length n. It requires time O(n + L · 2 L) and memory min(n, 2 L). This can speed up many attacks such as fast correlation attacks. We apply it to E0, and our best key-recovery attack works in 2 39 time given 2 39 consecutive bits after O(2 37) precomputation. This is the best known attack against E0 so far.
Prospects for Studies of Stellar Evolution and Stellar Death in the JWST Era
I review the prospects for studies of the advanced evolutionary stages of
low-, intermediate- and high-mass stars by the JWST and concurrent facilities,
with particular emphasis on how they may help elucidate the dominant
contributors to the interstellar dust component of galaxies. Observations
extending from the mid-infrared to the submillimeter can help quantify the
heavy element and dust species inputs to galaxies from AGB stars. JWST's MIRI
mid-infrared instrument will be so sensitive that observations of the dust
emission from individual intergalactic AGB stars and planetary nebulae in the
Virgo Cluster will be feasible. The Herschel Space Observatory will enable the
last largely unexplored spectral region, the far-IR to the submillimeter, to be
surveyed for new lines and dust features, while SOFIA will cover the wavelength
gap between JWST and Herschel, a spectral region containing important fine
structure lines, together with key water-ice and crystalline silicate bands.
Spitzer has significantly increased the number of Type II supernovae that have
been surveyed for early-epoch dust formation but reliable quantification of the
dust contributions from massive star supernovae of Type II, Type Ib and Type Ic
to low- and high-redshift galaxies should come from JWST MIRI observations,
which will be able to probe a volume over 1000 times larger than Spitzer.Comment: 24 pages, 19 figures. To appear in `Astrophysics in the Next Decade:

DES15E2mlf: a spectroscopically confirmed superluminous supernova that exploded 3.5 Gyr after the big bang
We present the Dark Energy Survey (DES) discovery of DES15E2mlf, the most distant superluminous supernova (SLSN) spectroscopically confirmed to date. The light curves and Gemini spectroscopy of DES15E2mlf indicate that it is a Type I superluminous supernova (SLSN-I) at z = 1.861 (a lookback time of ∼10 Gyr) and peaking at MAB = −22.3 ± 0.1 mag. Given the high redshift, our data probe the rest-frame ultraviolet (1400–3500 Å) properties of the SN, finding velocity of the C III feature changes by ∼5600 km s−1 over 14 d around maximum light. We find the host galaxy of DES15E2mlf has a stellar mass of 3.5+3.6 −2.4 × 109 M, which is more massive than the typical SLSN-I host galaxy
Animal models for COVID-19
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the aetiological agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), an emerging respiratory infection caused by the introduction of a novel coronavirus into humans late in 2019 (first detected in Hubei province, China). As of 18 September 2020, SARS-CoV-2 has spread to 215 countries, has infected more than 30 million people and has caused more than 950,000 deaths. As humans do not have pre-existing immunity to SARS-CoV-2, there is an urgent need to develop therapeutic agents and vaccines to mitigate the current pandemic and to prevent the re-emergence of COVID-19. In February 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) assembled an international panel to develop animal models for COVID-19 to accelerate the testing of vaccines and therapeutic agents. Here we summarize the findings to date and provides relevant information for preclinical testing of vaccine candidates and therapeutic agents for COVID-19
