On the origin of cavities in extraterrestrial magnetic spherules
It was discovered that extraterrestrial magnetic spherules larger than 10 μm in diameter contain internal cavities. The possible origin of cavities is discussed. It is suggested that the primary particles contain ferrous carbonate or ferric hydroxide that upon heating during entry of micrometeorite releases carbon dioxide or water vapor that produces cavity in the molten spherule. The chemical composition of magnetic spherules is similar to that of the crust of the Earth

Barbuda and Antigua's national animal is the fallow deer, Dama dama dama, a species native to the eastern Mediterranean that has been transported around the world by people during the last 8,000 years. The timing and circumstances by which fallow deer came to be established on Barbuda are currently uncertain but, by examining documentary, osteological and genetic evidence, this paper will consider the validity of existing theories. It will review the dynamics of human-Dama relationships from the 1500s AD to the present day and consider how the meaning attached to this species has changed through time: from a symbol of colonial authority and dominance, to a 'walking larder' after the slave emancipation of 1834, and now an important part of the island's economy and cultural heritage that requires careful management
First Dark Matter Search Results from the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) Experiment
The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a
dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground
Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. This Letter reports results from
LZ's first search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with an
exposure of 60 live days using a fiducial mass of 5.5 t. A profile-likelihood
ratio analysis shows the data to be consistent with a background-only
hypothesis, setting new limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon, spin-dependent
WIMP-neutron, and spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross-sections for WIMP masses
above 9 GeV/c. The most stringent limit is set at 30 GeV/c, excluding

Simulations of Events for the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) Dark Matter Experiment
The LUX-ZEPLIN dark matter search aims to achieve a sensitivity to the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent cross-section down to (1-2) pb at a WIMP mass of 40 GeV/. This paper describes the simulations framework that, along with radioactivity measurements, was used to support this projection, and also to provide mock data for validating reconstruction and analysis software. Of particular note are the event generators, which allow us to model the background radiation, and the detector response physics used in the production of raw signals, which can be converted into digitized waveforms similar to data from the operational detector. Inclusion of the detector response allows us to process simulated data using the same analysis routines as developed to process the experimental data
The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) Experiment
We describe the design and assembly of the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment, a direct detection search for cosmic WIMP dark matter particles. The centerpiece of the experiment is a large liquid xenon time projection chamber sensitive to low energy nuclear recoils. Rejection of backgrounds is enhanced by a Xe skin veto detector and by a liquid scintillator Outer Detector loaded with gadolinium for efficient neutron capture and tagging. LZ is located in the Davis Cavern at the 4850' level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA.
