Immediate implant placement for the treatment of a root-fractured tooth: Case report

    Get PDF
The use of osseointegrated implants has become an important alternative treatment approach in the rehabilitation of totally or partially edentulous patients. The classic protocol recommended to wait several months following extraction for the placement of implants. However,   the   refinement   of   surgical   techniques   and   implant   surfaces   has   allowed   for   the development of immediate post-extraction implant placement procedures. The immediate loading protocol contributes not only to decrease treatment time but also minimize the amount bone resorption. Additional advantages include easier determination of implant position, improved post-operative  healing  in  extraction  sockets,  and  increased  patient  acceptance.  The  objective  of the present study was to describe the extraction and immediate loading of a mandibular right central incisor following a diagnosis of root fracture. Our report showed that the results obtained with immediate implant placement are feasible and predictable, and that the use of one-stage procedures results in increased patient satisfaction

Dens in dente is an anomaly of dental development with involves the presence of enamel and dentin mineralized dental tissue in the pulp cavit. The invagination of these mineralized tissues before their mineralization is the most probable cause of this anomaly. Dens in dente may occur in any tooth but it happens more frequently in permanent upper lateral incisors. The aim of this paper is to report a case of an eleven years old male patient with dens in dente on the four permanent upper incisors and discuss the most important aspects of this anomaly. The treatment adopted involved the use of sealant on the palatine fossas and oral hygiene orientation

INCLUSÃO SOCIAL PARA PACIENTE COM DEFICIÊNCIA: UM NOVO MOTIVO PARA SORRIR

    Get PDF
For many centuries, society has been having difficulties dealing with disabled individuals. Such difficulties are a result of historical legacy and lack of information, which generates prejudice and makes society unable to provide care to these people. Disabled individuals have physical, intellectual, social and/or emotional alterations and they need to receive special education and temporary and definitive additional instructions. Social inclusion is based on the fact that every human being has the right to education, health, culture, leisure, work, social care, as well as access to information, communication, means of transport, and venues to get together. In that sense, dental care must be promoted. The objective of the present study is to report on a clinical case of a 17-year-old disabled patient who was having difficulties getting a job due to his oral condition. After being treated in the Extracurricular Project "Achieving Health:  Disabled Patients' Care" of ULBRA/RS, the patient's self-esteem was higher and he was socially included. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentration of fluoride in public water supplies in Canoas/RS. Samples of drinking water were collected in duplicates for eight months on 22 different points grouped into three water treatment plants of the city. The measurement of fluoride concentration was performed using the electrometric method. The analysis of samples collected in the study period showed that there was oscillation in fluoride concentrations in accordance with the sampling months (from 0.185 to 1.605 ppm /L). Of the samples, 96 (54.5%) were inadequate (0.6 ppm 0.9 ppm) as the fluoride concentration. Of inadequate samples, the majority showed concentrations above the maximum acceptable concentration for drinking water standard. There was statistically significant difference among the three water treatment plants regarding the suitability of the fluoride concentration (p 0.001). The large variation in relation to fluoride concentration as well as the high percentage of inadequate samples revealed the need to implement measures of external control to ensure continuous effectiveness of water fluoridation

The aims of this study were to analyze the spatial distribution of dental caries among preschool children and create equiprobable scenarios of its occurrence in the city of Canoas, Southern Brazil. Trained, calibrated dentists examined 1,100 children enrolled at public preschools to determine dental caries experience following World Health Organization criteria. The ArcGis 10.0 Geographic Information System was used to analyze spatial and non-spatial data. Geostatistical Modeling Software was used in geostatistical analyses to detect spatial continuity and create maps using stochastic simulation. Overall prevalence of dental caries was 25% with intraurban differentials in distribution. The findings enabled the generation of 100 equiprobable scenarios and maps with the best and worst scenarios. The highest concentration of dental caries occurrence was found in the western portion of the city, while the lowest probability of occurrence was found in the northern and southern portions. Identifying spatial inequalities in health conditions and visualizing them through the creation of maps can help to qualify and organize public health interventions and provide information to gain better understanding of the influence of the surrounding environment on adverse health conditions.O objetivo do estudo foi analisar a distribuição espacial de cárie dentária entre crianças préescolares e criar cenários equiprováveis da ocorrência deste agravo na cidade de Canoas, sul do Brasil.

    Get PDF
Objective: To evaluate scientific production on disabled persons with dental care needs over a 20-year period. Material and Methods: The search was conducted in the PubMed database using the MeSH terms “Disabled Persons” AND “Dentistry”. Three researchers selected articles based on readings of the title, abstract and full text. The articles were categorized according to periodical, country, study design, subject and classification of comorbidities and associated disorders. Three hundred ninety-seven articles published in 140 periodicals were included. Results: The periodicals Special Care in Dentistry (54), Dental Clinics of North America (14) and British Dental Journal (14) accounted for 21% of the publications. The studies were conducted in 50 countries, with the United States accounting for 33%. More than half (52%) of the studies had a cross-sectional design. The main subject addressed was oral diagnosis and most of the comorbidities were generalized disabilities. Conclusion: Although a large number of the periodicals have contributed to knowledge building on disabled persons with dental care needs, the number of articles is small compared to other fields of dentistry. Moreover, important gaps in knowledge persist and projects with better methodological designs are needed to offer a more substantial contribution to clinical practice

This study evaluate the marginal microleakage in deciduous molars cavities restored with ionomer cement modified by resin (Vitremer, 3 M) comparing two different techniques: the conventional (according to manufacturer instructions) and with the hybridization technique (acid phosphoric 37% and adhesive system Scotchbond Multi Pourpose , 3M). Proximal cavities were prepared in 20 sound deciduous molars, right after extraction. The samples were randomly divided in two groups. Group 1 consisted in teeth prepared with the conventional technique and in the group 2 teeth with etching by phosphoric acid and adhesive system. The teeth were submitted to termical cycle process (100 cycles, each one of 3 sub cycles of 5o C, 37o C and 55o C - by 60 Sec of bath immersion each one), after restorations. After that, the teeth were impermeable with nail polish and wax #7 keeping 2mm of area in the junction of the cervical restoration margin, and them immersed in methylen blue solution to 0,5% , seccionated and evaluated by one examiner, who established the microleakage degree. The data reveal the both techniques show the micro infiltration in different degree, but it has no statistical difference between techniques.
