Automatic regional moment tensor inversion in the European-Mediterranean region

We produce fast and automatic moment tensor solutions for all moderate to strong earthquakes in the European-Mediterranean region. The procedure automatically screens near real-time earthquake alerts provided by a large number of agencies. Each event with magnitude M ≥ 4.7 triggers an automatic request for near real-time data at several national and international data centres. Moment tensor inversion is performed using complete regional long-period (50-100 s) waveforms. Initially the data are inverted for a fixed depth to remove traces with a low signal-to-noise ratio. The remaining data are then inverted for several trial depths to find the best-fitting depth. Solutions are produced within 90 min of an earthquake. We analyse the results for the period 2000 April to 2002 April to evaluate the performance of the procedure. For quality assessment, we compared the results with the independent Swiss regional moment tensor catalogue (SRMT), and divided the 87 moment tensor solutions into three groups: 38 A-quality solutions with well-resolved Mw, depth and focal mechanism; 21 B-quality solutions with well-resolved Mw; and 28 unreliable C-quality solutions. The non-homogeneous station and event distributions, varying noise level, and inaccurate earthquake locations affected solution quality. For larger events (Mw ≥ 5.5) we consistently obtained A-quality solutions. For Mw = 4.5-5.5 we obtained A- and B-quality solutions. À partir d’anecdotes issues de recherches menées chez les Mapuche, j’analyserai la position particulière de l’anthropologue face à l’obligation de consommer tous les aliments qui lui sont présentés. Je montrerai comment il est cependant possible de s’y soustraire soit en utilisant les mêmes moyens que les Mapuche soit en s’inscrivant dans une altérité totale, oscillant ainsi entre les ressorts de la reconnaissance d’une certaine intégration et l’affirmation de la différence. Les échanges d’aliments seront aussi analysés comme des échanges‑dons qui (dé)lient personnes et groupes domestiques, qui marquent la reconnaissance, l’amitié, le respect, mais peuvent aussi être les supports d’actes de sorcellerie qui entraîneront la maladie et parfois la mort.Using anecdotes taken from my research among the Mapuche, I will analyse the anthropologist’s specific position faced with the obligation to consume all the food that is presented to them. I will show how it is nevertheless possible to evade this obligation, either by utilising the same means as the Mapuche or by placing oneself in a total form of alterity, oscillating between a recognition of a certain integration and an affirmation of difference. Exchanges of food will thus be analysed as gift-exchanges (Mauss) which (un)tie people and domestic groups together, which mark reognition, friendship, respect, but can also be the basis of acts of witchcraft leading to illness and sometimes death

Listening with Curiosity – Tracking the Acoustic Response of Portable Laser Ablation

Nowadays, one of the methods of choice for minimal invasive sampling of solid matter is laser ablation (LA). Routine LA sampling is performed commonly in the laboratory and the amount of ablated mass can directly be monitored and analysed. By contrast laser-based sampling in the field, using a portable laser ablation system (pLA), still remains challenging concerning low-absorbing or NIR-transparent samples. The current hardware is limited in regards to photon energy and density resulting in unsteady ablation. But as the actual amount of collected mass is the major crux of on-site sampling, with this performance it is often unknown and estimates can only be made based on the experience from prior method development and the experience of the user. In the following work an easy-to-use method to monitor the amount of ablated material collected during laser-based sampling by measuring the acoustic response is presented. The pLA-system was coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) via a diffusion driven gas exchange device (GED) which allowed to monitor mass removal and acoustic response quasi-simultaneously. For the current instrumentation only actual mass removal leads to the formation of shockwaves (SW) and, thus, acoustic signals. These events can be used as indicator for executed LA events and counted on an individual basis. The intensity of acoustic signals has been shown to correlate with the LA mass, i.e., the amount of ablated material. This allows to perform re-adjustment of the laser focus during sampling for optimal ablation based on the intensity of the acoustic signal. Likewise, acoustic intensity together with counting allows the operator to make estimates about total mass sampled. Therefore, unsuccessful laser aerosol collection in the field shall become a thing of the past

Análisis integrado de tres modelos de gestión de la tecnología e innovación y su aplicación en un estudio de caso empresarial

En la presente investigación se realizó el análisis integrado y comparativo de tres modelos de gestión de la tecnología e innovación, siendo estos modelos, el propuesto por Jacques Morin, TEMAGUIDE de la fundación COTEC y el Premio Nacional de Tecnología de México. En este sentido la presente investigación tiene como objetivo la evaluación del análisis comparado de los tres modelos y su aplicación en un estudio de caso en la empresa PSW SA, resultando más sólido y poderoso que la visión individual de cada modelo. Del análisis integrado se observa, que este aporta una visión más amplia y consolida una herramienta importante para el análisis cualitativo de una organización respecto a gestión de la tecnología e innovación. Se puede observar que cada modelo propone funciones específicas y a su vez existen funciones comunes a todos y funciones que al ser comparadas resultan complementarias respecto a la gestión tecnológica. PSW SA, es una PYME peruana dedicada a la generación de valor agregado a partir de recursos algales, teniendo como base el desarrollo e implementación de tecnologías innovadoras. Para lo cual utiliza herramientas de diferentes ramas de la ciencia como son, biotecnología, biología marina, química, física las cuales se amalgaman en diferentes procesos de producción gracias a principios y conocimientos de ingeniería pesquera, industrial y mecánica. Se observó que dependiendo del tipo y tamaño de organización, así como, de los procesos ya implementados de gestión tecnológica, tendrá mayor o menor utilidad la utilización del modelo integrado sintetizado. Para una organización de tamaño pequeño o mediano como es el presente estudio de caso, podría resultar compleja la aplicación del análisis integrado ya que demanda más tiempo y recursos humanos para la realización del mismo que un análisis individual con cualquiera de los tres modelos señalado

Earthquakes in Switzerland and surrounding regions during 2010

This report of the Swiss Seismological Service summarizes the seismic activity in Switzerland and surrounding regions during 2010. During this period, 407 earthquakes and 85 quarry blasts were detected and located in the region under consideration. With a total of only 19 events with ML≥2.5, the seismic activity in the year 2010 was below the average over the previous 35years.
