    Black carbon aerosol reductions during COVID-19 confinement quantified by aircraft measurements over Europe

    The abrupt reduction in human activities during the first lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic created unprecedented atmospheric conditions. To quantify the changes in lower tropospheric air pollution, we conducted the BLUESKY aircraft campaign and measured vertical profiles of black carbon (BC) aerosol particles over western and southern Europe in May and June 2020. We compared the results to similar measurements of the EMeRGe EU campaign performed in July 2017 and found that the BC mass concentrations (MBC) were reduced by about 48%. For BC particle number concentrations, we found comparable reductions. Based on ECHAM/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) chemistry-transport model simulations, we found differences in meteorological conditions and flight patterns responsible for about 7% of the MBC reductions. Accordingly 41% of MBC reductions can be attributed to reduced anthropogenic emissions. Our results reflect the strong and immediate positive effect of changes in human activities on air quality and the atmospheric role of BC aerosols as a major air pollutant in the Anthropocene

    The main objective of the ACRIDICON-CHUVA campaign in September 2014 was the investigation of aerosol-cloud-interactions in the Amazon Basin. Cloud properties near cloud base of growing convective cumuli were characterized by cloud droplet size distribution measurements using a cloud combination probe and a cloud and aerosol spectrometer.     Overview: On the transport and transformation of pollutants in the outflow of major population centres – observational data from the EMeRGe European intensive operational period in summer 2017

    Megacities and other major population centres (MPCs) worldwide are major sources of air pollution, both locally as well as downwind. The overall assessment and prediction of the impact of MPC pollution on tropospheric chemistry are challenging. The present work provides an overview of the highlights of a major new contribution to the understanding of this issue based on the data and analysis of the EMeRGe (Effect of Megacities on the transport and transformation of pollutants on the Regional to Global scales) international project. EMeRGe focuses on atmospheric chemistry, dynamics, and transport of local and regional pollution originating in MPCs. Airborne measurements, taking advantage of the long range capabilities of the High Altitude and LOng Range Research Aircraft (HALO, https://www.halo-spp.de, last access: 22 March 2022), are a central part of the project. The synergistic use and consistent interpretation of observational data sets of different spatial and temporal resolution (e.g. from ground-based networks, airborne campaigns, and satellite measurements) supported by modelling within EMeRGe provide unique insight to test the current understanding of MPC pollution outflows. In order to obtain an adequate set of measurements at different spatial scales, two field experiments were positioned in time and space to contrast situations when the photochemical transformation of plumes emerging from MPCs is large. These experiments were conducted in summer 2017 over Europe and in the inter-monsoon period over Asia in spring 2018. The intensive observational periods (IOPs) involved HALO airborne measurements of ozone and its precursors, volatile organic compounds, aerosol particles, and related species as well as coordinated ground-based ancillary observations at different sites. Perfluorocarbon (PFC) tracer releases and model forecasts supported the flight planning, the identification of pollution plumes, and the analysis of chemical transformations during transport. This paper describes the experimental deployment and scientific questions of the IOP in Europe. The MPC targets – London (United Kingdom; UK), the Benelux/Ruhr area (Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany), Paris (France), Rome and the Po Valley (Italy), and Madrid and Barcelona (Spain) – were investigated during seven HALO research flights with an aircraft base in Germany for a total of 53 flight hours. An in-flight comparison of HALO with the collaborating UK-airborne platform Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements (FAAM) took place to assure accuracy and comparability of the instrumentation on board. Overall, EMeRGe unites measurements of near- and far-field emissions and hence deals with complex air masses of local and distant sources. Regional transport of several European MPC outflows was successfully identified and measured. Chemical processing of the MPC emissions was inferred from airborne observations of primary and secondary pollutants and the ratios between species having different chemical lifetimes. Photochemical processing of aerosol and secondary formation or organic acids was evident during the transport of MPC plumes. Urban plumes mix efficiently with natural sources as mineral dust and with biomass burning emissions from vegetation and forest fires. This confirms the importance of wildland fire emissions in Europe and indicates an important but discontinuous contribution to the European emission budget that might be of relevance in the design of efficient mitigation strategies. The present work provides an overview of the most salient results in the European context, with these being addressed in more detail within additional dedicated EMeRGe studies. The deployment and results obtained in Asia will be the subject of separate publications

    Impact of reduced emissions on direct and indirect aerosol radiative forcing during COVID-19 lockdown in Europe

    Aerosols influence the Earth’s energy balance through direct radiative effects and indirectly by altering the cloud microphysics. Anthropogenic aerosol emissions dropped considerably when the global COVID–19 pandemic resulted in severe restraints on mobility, production, and public life in spring 2020. Here we assess the effects of these reduced emissions on direct and indirect aerosol radiative forcing over Europe, excluding contributions from contrails. We simulate the atmospheric composition with the ECHAM5/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) model in a baseline (business as usual) and a reduced emission scenario. The model results are compared to aircraft observations from the BLUESKY aircraft campaign performed in May June 2020 over Europe

    Calibration and evaluation of a broad supersaturation scanning (BS2) cloud condensation nuclei counter for rapid measurement of particle hygroscopicity and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activity

    For understanding and assessing aerosol–cloud interactions and their impact on climate, reliable measurement data on aerosol particle hygroscopicity and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activity are required. The CCN activity of aerosol particles can be determined by scanning particle size and supersaturation (S) in CCN measurements. Compared to an existing differential mobility analyzer (DMA) with CCN activity measurement, a broad supersaturation scanning CCN (BS2-CCN) system, in which particles are exposed to a range of S simultaneously, can measure the CCN activity with a high time resolution. Based on a monotonic relation between the activation supersaturation of aerosol particles (Saerosol) and the activated fraction (Fact) of the BS2-CCN measurement, we can derive Îș, a single hygroscopicity parameter, directly. Here, we describe how the BS2-CCN system can be effectively calibrated and which factors can affect the calibration curve (Fact−Saerosol). For calibration, size-resolved CCN measurements with ammonium sulfate and sodium chloride particles are performed under three different thermal gradient (dT) conditions (dT=6, 8, and 10 K). We point out key processes that can affect the calibration curve and thereby need to be considered as follows: first, the shape of the calibration curve is primarily influenced by Smax, the maximum S in the activation tube. We need to determine appropriate Smax depending on the particle size and Îș to be investigated. To minimize the effect of multiply charged particles, a small geometric mean diameter (Dg) and geometric standard deviation (σg) in number size distribution are recommended when generating the calibration aerosols. Last, Fact is affected by particle number concentration and has a decreasing rate of 0.02 per 100 cm−3 due to the water consumption in the activation tube. For evaluating the BS2-CCN system, intercomparison experiments between typical DMA-CCN and BS2-CCN measurements were performed with a laboratory-generated aerosol mixture and ambient aerosols. Good agreement of Îș values between DMA-CCN and BS2-CCN measurements for both experiments shows that the BS2-CCN system can measure CCN activity well compared to the existing measurement method and can measure a broad range of hygroscopicity distributions with a high time resolution (∌1 s vs. a few minutes for a standard CCN activity measurement). As the hygroscopicity can be used as a proxy for the chemical composition, our method can also serve as a complementary approach for fast and size-resolved detection and estimation of aerosol chemical composition

    Quantifying the precipitation within clouds is crucial for our understanding of the Earth's hydrological cycle. Using in situ measurements of cloud and rain properties over the Amazon Basin and Atlantic Ocean, we show here a linear relationship between the effective radius (re) and precipitation water content near the tops of convective clouds for different pollution states and temperature levels. Our results emphasize the role of re to determine both initiation and amount of precipitation

    Influx of African biomass burning aerosol during the Amazonian dry season through layered transatlantic transport of black carbon-rich smoke

    Black carbon (BC) aerosols are influencing the Earth’s atmosphere and climate, but their microphysical properties, spatiotemporal distribution and long-range transport are not well constrained. This study analyzes the transatlantic transport of BC-rich African biomass burning (BB) pollution into the Amazon Basin, based on airborne observations of aerosol particles and trace gases in and off the Brazilian coast during the ACRIDICON-CHUVA campaign in September 2014, combining in-situ measurements on the research aircraft HALO with satellite remote-sensing and numerical model results. During flight AC19 over land and ocean at the Brazilian coastline in the northeast of the Amazon Basin, we observed a BC-rich atmospheric layer at ~ 3.5 km altitude with a vertical extension of ~ 0.3 km. Backward trajectory analyses suggest that fires in African grasslands, savannas, and shrublands were the main source of this pollution layer, and that the observed BB smoke had undergone more than 10 days of atmospheric transport and aging. The BC mass concentrations in the layer ranged from 0.5 to 2 Όg m−3, and the BC particle number fraction of ~ 40 % was about 8 times higher than observed in a fresh Amazonian BB plume, representing the highest value ever observed in the region. Upon entering the Amazon Basin, the layer started to broaden and to subside, due to convective mixing and entrainment of the BB aerosol into the boundary layer. Satellite observations show that the transatlantic transport of pollution layers is a frequently occurring process, seasonally peaking in August/September. By analyzing the aircraft observations within the broader context of the long-term data from the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO), we found that the transatlantic transport of African BB smoke layers has a strong impact on the north-central Amazonian aerosol population during the BB-influenced season (July to November). Specifically, the early BB season in this part of the Amazon appears to be dominated by African smoke, whereas the later BB season appears to be dominated by South American fires. This dichotomy is reflected in pronounced changes of aerosol optical properties such as the single scattering albedo (increasing from 0.85 in August to 0.90 in November) and the BC-to-CO enhancement ratio (decreasing from 7.4 to 4.4 ng m−3 ppb−1). Our results suggest that, despite the high amount of BC particles, the African BB aerosol act as efficient cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) with potentially important implications for aerosol-cloud interactions and the hydrological cycle in the Amazon Basin
