Denouncing Gender Violence in Spain and Rewriting the Female Narrative

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes how Spanish female artists across Spain denounce domestic violence by exposing abuse and the culture of women domination in public spaces. Gender violence is important to analyze because it is a current issue in Spain, and globally, as there is a fight for gender equality in countries around the world. Technically speaking, domestic violence includes physical, emotional, and sexual abuse occurring between partners or within a family (Dutton). Recently, many artists across Spain are looking to reconstruct a new narrative for women. This paper will look at how gender-based violence against women was practiced throughout the Spanish Civil War, and continued throughout the Franco regime, through various practices and penal codes (ADRIAN). Next, the research will look at how artists such as Raquel Riba Rossy and Sara Batuecas denounce gender violence through their works, like Riba Rossy’s cartoon character, Lola, and the “Tree of Women,” and Batuecas´s poster series of physical harassment (Street art madrid; Tolonen; Atienza). Finally, the paper will analyze how Carmela García is placing women in empowering scenarios as liberal professionals without demeaning the male (Maria Cristina Masaveu Peterson Fundación). This can be especially admired in the work “Memoria” (Maria Cristina Masaveu Peterson Fundación)

Tearing Down the House: Weakening the Foundation of Divorce Mediation Brick by Brick

Mediation is an attractive alternative to traditional litigation. In the last decade the use of mediation in family law has increased substantially. Mediation is particularly suited to family disputes when the parties voluntarily choose to use the process because it can help the parties resolve disputes and foster long-term relationships. Not all parties, however, are given a choice between mediation and more traditional adversarial justice. Currently, state legislation ranges from permitting mediation to mandating mediation. Mandatory mediation raises the issue of due process violations, especially in situations involving spousal abuse. This Note analyzes the use of mediation in domestic relations cases and specifically looks at the use of mandatory mediation in situations involving abuse. The author suggests that when mediation is voluntary it can be a useful tool in resolving domestic disputes, including divorce and child custody issues. When mediation is mandated, however, it violates the participants\u27 due process rights under the Fourteenth Amendment-- especially in situations where one of the parties has been abused by the other. The author suggests that mediation should remain voluntary, that statutes should provide for mediation only when parties are willing to participate, and that mediators should screen for abuse and discontinue the mediation process if abuse is discovered

Omnibus Budget Bills And The Covert Dismantling Of Canadian Democracy

Nominated for 2017 Outstanding Graduate Student Paper SeriesThis paper examines the rise of omnibus budget bills in Canadian Parliament and argues that the bills are a ruling class political tactic aimed at subverting democracy and restructuring Canadian social relations along neoliberal lines. Research results show that the increase in use of the bills corresponds with the rise of neoliberal politics in Canada. Further, the bills have by and large operated to subvert Canadian Parliamentary democracy while implementing neoliberal policy reforms such as dismantling the social safety net, introducing regressive tax reforms, rolling back regulation, and privatizing previously public enterprises. Finally, the bills have contributed to a political nihilism in Canada, that operates to further de-democratize the population and may contribute to the disintegration of a democratic political imaginary in this country. Social movements such as Idle No More, who have faced down the politics of domination and exploitation as represented by omnibus budget bills are powerful counterforces to the neoliberal political project in Canadian society

Buddhist astrology and astral magic in the Tang Dynasty

This study surveys the introduction of astrology into East Asia with a primary focus on the Buddhist experience of Indian and Iranian astrology during the eighth and ninth centuries. It is argued that prior to the introduction of Esoteric Buddhism during the 8th century, the Chinese sangha had no pressing need to observe astrology. However, following the rising popularity of Tantric rituals, which require proper timing according to non-Chinese astrological conventions, Chinese Buddhism took a deep interest in astrology. This in turn prompted a wider interest in astrology among Chinese elites, encouraging the translation of more foreign works on astrology, even outside of a Buddhist context. It is shown that around the year 800 there was a shift from Indian to Iranian sources of astrology, most likely as a result of ethnic Iranians working at court. Iranian astrology, which included a rich system of horoscopy rooted in the earlier Hellenistic tradition, prompted a booming popular interest in astrology. Buddhists subsequently took up practice of horoscopy for themselves. Chinese Buddhist astrology was then exported to neighboring countries, most notably Japan where it influenced medieval religious and court cultures.Asian Studie

One of the features of Viktor Neborak’s multifaceted work is its intersemioticity, its connection with other types of art. The article reveals the role of rock music in Neborak’s works. The main focus is on the collection Flying Head (1990), twenty poems from which were set to music. The importance of rhythm is emphasized. Neborak’s cooperation with Lviv rock musicians (The Cry of Jeremiah, Dead Rooster, Neborak rock band, bard and translator Viktor Morozov), his participation in the Nebo-rock musical project are highlighted. The album Terrible Birthday (1995) of this project as the beginning of the tradition of performances of Ukrainian poets accompanied by musicians.Jedną z cech wieloaspektowej twórczości Wiktora Neboraka jest jej intersemiotyczność, powiązanie z innymi rodzajami sztuki. Artykuł ujawnia rolę muzyki rockowej w twórczości poety Neboraka. Główny nacisk położono na tomik Latająca głowa (1990), z którego dwadzieścia wierszy zostało oprawionych w muzykę. Podkreślono rolę rytmu w twórczości poety. Opisano współ- pracę W. Neboraka z lwowskimi muzykami rockowymi (zespoły Lament Jeremiasza, Martwy Kogut, Neborak-rock-bend, bard i tłumacz Wiktor Morozow), jego udział w projekcie muzycznym Nebo-rock. Governing without Governed and Governors: An Attempt to Establish a Non-Hierarchical Organizational Repertoire

This study focuses on attempts to establish non-hierarchical structures and decision-making processes within a squatters' movement, where these modes of self-organizing are usual. Beneath the declaration of a non-hierarchical structure, many variations and perspectives on how to achieve such a goal may be concealed. Besides formal meetings of the collective where common decisions are made, a horizontal logic of sharing space as a commons has to be maintained in everyday life. A reflexive attitude toward the distribution of power is a key aspect of managing the tension that arises between the idealized vision of horizontality and the efforts that are made to realize it. I analyse how the experiment with non-hierarchical organization is carried out in a squatted garden in a city in southern France, where people live in huts and trailers and share a legally rented common house on a connected parcel of land. By using ethnography, in which semi-structured interviews and participant observation form a crucial part, I interpret the inner dynamics of a concrete collective and its strategies to maintain a non-hierarchical logic. I focus on the tools, methods and practices that are used by the participants to keep the distribution of power horizontal and on their reflection on this process. Studying a case such as this will shed light on the variations in how a sustainable project on squatted land can be formed. Analysing one possibility that appears to be successful, and its interpretation within the context of new left movements, help us to better understand prefigurative attempts at creating alternative forms of coexistence

    Furniture Mover

The movement of furniture is an often overlooked pain point for physically-challenged individuals, especially when rearranging furniture in a room. These individuals may try to minimize the risk of tip-over or strain-related injuries by seeking assistance from others. Still, some individuals are limited in finding volunteers forthcoming and capable of helping. This can lead to a dilemma of either being able to find individuals willing to assist in the process or risking one’s own personal safety when moving furniture. The proposed design project implements the use of multiple, independent platforms with mecanum wheels placed underneath each corner of a piece of furniture by a user. These devices will work together to move furniture based on commands from a wireless device, allowing for the adjustment of furniture with more flexible positioning and will negate the requirement of human force, preventing physical strain on one\u27s body
