Scalable Similarity Search for Molecular Descriptors
Similarity search over chemical compound databases is a fundamental task in
the discovery and design of novel drug-like molecules. Such databases often
encode molecules as non-negative integer vectors, called molecular descriptors,
which represent rich information on various molecular properties. While there
exist efficient indexing structures for searching databases of binary vectors,
solutions for more general integer vectors are in their infancy. In this paper
we present a time- and space- efficient index for the problem that we call the
succinct intervals-splitting tree algorithm for molecular descriptors (SITAd).
Our approach extends efficient methods for binary-vector databases, and uses
ideas from succinct data structures. Our experiments, on a large database of
over 40 million compounds, show SITAd significantly outperforms alternative

Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays and Neutrinos
The observation of neutrinos from cosmic accelerators will be revolutionary.
High energy neutrinos are closely connected to ultrahigh energy cosmic rays and
their sources. Cosmic ray sources are likely to produce neutrinos and the
propagation of ultrahigh cosmic rays from distant sources can generate PeV to
ZeV neutrinos. We briefly review recent progress on the observations of
ultrahigh energy cosmic rays and their implications for the future detections

PathPred: an enzyme-catalyzed metabolic pathway prediction server
The KEGG RPAIR database is a collection of biochemical structure transformation patterns, called RDM patterns, and chemical structure alignments of substrate-product pairs (reactant pairs) in all known enzyme-catalyzed reactions taken from the Enzyme Nomenclature and the KEGG PATHWAY database. Here, we present PathPred (http://www.genome.jp/tools/pathpred/), a web-based server to predict plausible pathways of muti-step reactions starting from a query compound, based on the local RDM pattern match and the global chemical structure alignment against the reactant pair library. In this server, we focus on predicting pathways for microbial biodegradation of environmental compounds and biosynthesis of plant secondary metabolites, which correspond to characteristic RDM patterns in 947 and 1397 reactant pairs, respectively. The server provides transformed compounds and reference transformation patterns in each predicted reaction, and displays all predicted multi-step reaction pathways in a tree-shaped graph
Adolescent Social Anxiety, School Satisfaction, Family Emotional Support, and School Absenteeism: Findings from Young-HUNT3 and Norwegian National Education Data
Background: Adolescents grappling with social anxiety may experience poor school satisfaction, resorting to school-related avoidance behaviors, exemplified by absenteeism, as a coping mechanism. Understanding the role of family support in alleviating the adverse effects of social anxiety on school satisfaction is imperative for fostering supportive educational settings. Although there is literature regarding how school satisfaction promotes positive adolescent outcomes, empirical knowledge on the interrelation between social anxiety, school satisfaction, and family emotional support is limited. This study investigates the association between social anxiety, family emotional support, school satisfaction, and school absenteeism within the theoretical framework of the stage-environment fit theory to offer insight into how family emotional support can moderate the influence of social anxiety on school-related outcomes. Methods: Utilizing a population-based sample of 1861 upper secondary school pupils from the Trøndelag Young Health study “Young-HUNT3 study”, we employed an index of moderated mediation to examine the role of family emotional support in moderating the association between social anxiety and school-related avoidance behavior related to school satisfaction. Results: Family emotional support had moderated mediation association for school absenteeism (β = 0.128, 95% CI 0.019, 0.278) and extracurricular activity (β = −0.003, 95% CI −0.008, −0.000). Conclusions: This urges further investigation into the specific mechanisms and individual differences influencing these relationships, aiming to deepen our understanding of adolescents’ experiences and inform comprehensive strategies for promoting their well-being within school communities
Cosmic Rays at the highest energies
After a century of observations, we still do not know the origin of cosmic
rays. I will review the current state of cosmic ray observations at the highest
energies, and their implications for proposed acceleration models and secondary
astroparticle fluxes. Possible sources have narrowed down with the confirmation
of a GZK-like spectral feature. The anisotropy observed by the Pierre Auger
Observatory may signal the dawn of particle astronomy raising hopes for high
energy neutrino observations. However, composition related measurements point
to a different interpretation. A clear resolution of this mystery calls for

Polarisation signatures in radio for inclined cosmic-ray induced air-shower identification
Autonomous radio-detection, i.e., detection of air-showers with standalone
radio arrays, is one of the major technical challenges to overcome for the next
generation astroparticle detectors. In this context, we study polarisation
signatures of simulated radio signals to perform an identification of the
associated air-showers initiated by cosmic-rays and neutrinos. We compare the
two sources of radio emission (the charge excess and geomagnetic) and show that
the former is almost negligible for inclined (zenith angle )
cosmic-ray air-showers. This provides an efficient background rejection
criterion at the DAQ level, based on the projection of the total electric field
along the direction of the local magnetic field. This relevant quantity can be
easily computed -- even in an online treatment -- for antennas measuring three
orthogonal polarisations. Independently of the experimental antenna layout, we
estimate that assuming a random polarisation of noise events, a rejection from
(for a non favorable detector location) to (for a
favorable location) of the noise induced events and a trigger efficiency of 87%
(93%) with a () trigger threshold level should be
achievable. We also show that neutrino-induced showers present a charge excess
to geomagnetic signal ratio up to times higher than for cosmic ray
showers. Although this characteristic makes the identification of
neutrino-induced showers challenging via the method developed here, it provides
an efficient criterion to perform an offline discrimination between cosmic-ray
and neutrino primaries. The stronger charge excess emission will also help the

Positive psychology of Malaysian students: impacts of engagement, motivation, self-compassion and wellbeing on mental health
Malaysia plays a key role in education of the Asia Pacific, expanding its scholarly output rapidly. However, mental health of Malaysian students is challenging, and their help-seeking is low because of stigma. This study explored the relationships between mental health and positive psychological constructs (academic engagement, motivation, self-compassion, and wellbeing), and evaluated the relative contribution of each positive psychological construct to mental health in Malaysian students. An opportunity sample of 153 students completed the measures regarding these constructs. Correlation, regression, and mediation analyses were conducted. Engagement, amotivation, self-compassion, and wellbeing were associated with, and predicted large variance in mental health. Self-compassion was the strongest independent predictor of mental health among all the positive psychological constructs. Findings can imply the strong links between mental health and positive psychology, especially selfcompassion. Moreover, intervention studies to examine the effects of self-compassion training on mental health of Malaysian students appear to be warranted.N/
The optical depth of the Universe to ultrahigh energy cosmic ray scattering in the magnetized large scale structure
This paper provides an analytical description of the transport of ultrahigh
energy cosmic rays in an inhomogeneously magnetized intergalactic medium. This
latter is modeled as a collection of magnetized scattering centers such as
radio cocoons, magnetized galactic winds, clusters or magnetized filaments of
large scale structure, with negligible magnetic fields in between. Magnetic
deflection is no longer a continuous process, it is rather dominated by
scattering events. We study the interaction between high energy cosmic rays and
the scattering agents. We then compute the optical depth of the Universe to
cosmic ray scattering and discuss the phenomological consequences for various
source scenarios. For typical parameters of the scattering centers, the optical
depth is greater than unity at 5x10^{19}eV, but the total angular deflection is
smaller than unity. One important consequence of this scenario is the
possibility that the last scattering center encountered by a cosmic ray be
mistaken with the source of this cosmic ray. In particular, we suggest that
part of the correlation recently reported by the Pierre Auger Observatory may
be affected by such delusion: this experiment may be observing in part the last
scattering surface of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays rather than their source
population. Since the optical depth falls rapidly with increasing energy, one
should probe the arrival directions of the highest energy events beyond
10^{20}eV on an event by event basis to circumvent this effect.Comment: version to appear in PRD; substantial improvements: extended
