    Process transparency on construction sites : examples from construction companies in Brazil

    Process transparency is the core concept in Visual Management (VM), which is one of the founding blocks of the Toyota Production System. This paper presents the preliminary results of a collaborative research conducted between Brazil and the UK, as part of a research effort focused on the application of Visual Management in construction. How process transparency is realized on construction sites is the main research question of the paper. The use of this concept and the implementation of the transparency theory were investigated through multiple case studies, carried out in nine different construction companies. The findings are explained through six theoretical transparency increasing approaches. The affecting parameters in the application of, the management’s perception of and several methods in process transparency in construction were identified. Further work, especially exploring the functions of process transparency on construction sites and reflecting the worker perception of the issue, is necessary to elaborate the process transparency concept

    Which are the wastes of construction?

    In the Toyota Production System, the seven wastes presented by Ohno have provided understanding on the foundations of production management and guidance for action for more than half a century. This list has been widely used also when the Toyota Production System and its derivatives, like lean production, have been adapted and diffused into other industries, such as construction. However, the seven wastes originate from a mass production context and do not cover, for example, the design stage of a productive endeavour, as it is commonly found in construction. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of waste in construction as well as to explore the potential of creating a list of wastes particularly for this type of production. Such a list would be instrumental in creating awareness on the major waste types occurring in construction, as well as mobilizing action towards stemming, reducing and eliminating them. The discussion is structured by analyzing the sufficiency of the classical seven wastes from a construction viewpoint and by exploring alternative wastes in cases where the classical list is not found adequate. It is anticipated that this preparatory discussion will propel the next stage of research towards producing a list of wastes specifically for construction

    Clinical value of cortical bursting in preterm infants with intraventricular haemorrhage

    Background: In healthy preterm infants, cortical burst rate and temporal dynamics predict important measures such as brain growth. We hypothesised that in preterm infants with germinal matrix-intraventricular haemorrhage (GM-IVH), cortical bursting could provide prognostic information. / Aims: We determined how cortical bursting was influenced by the injury, and whether this was related to developmental outcome. / Study design: Single-centre retrospective cohort study at University College London Hospitals, UK. / Subjects: 33 infants with GM-IVH ≥ grade II (median gestational age: 25 weeks). / Outcome measures: We identified 47 EEGs acquired between 24 and 40 weeks corrected gestational age as part of routine clinical care. In a subset of 33 EEGs from 25 infants with asymmetric injury, we used the least-affected hemisphere as an internal comparison. We tested whether cortical burst rate predicted survival without severe impairment (median 2 years follow-up). / Results: In asymmetric injury, cortical burst rate was lower over the worst- than least-affected hemisphere, and bursts over the worst-affected hemisphere were less likely to immediately follow bursts over the least-affected hemisphere than vice versa. Overall, burst rate was lower in cases of GM-IVH with parenchymal involvement, relative to milder structural injury grades. Higher burst rate modestly predicted survival without severe language (AUC 0.673) or motor impairment (AUC 0.667), which was partly mediated by structural injury grade. / Conclusions: Cortical bursting can index the functional injury after GM-IVH: perturbed burst initiation (rate) and propagation (inter-hemispheric dynamics) likely reflect associated grey matter and white matter damage. Higher cortical burst rate is reassuring for a positive outcome

    Towards developing a model to study alcohol drinking and craving in female mice housed in automated cages

    It is about half a century ago when the so-called "Wise model" to study alcohol drinking behavior in rats was established. The model was based on voluntary intermittent access to increasing concentrations of alcohol. We aimed to establish a model of alcohol craving and used an extinction test on withdrawal days 1 and 10 to study motivation for alcohol. For this purpose, the alcohol drinking training was paired with light cues to establish conditioning. The extinction test was carried out without alcohol but in the presence of light cues and empty bottles. The outcome measures were number of visits, nosepokes, and licks in the conditioned corner where the number of nosepokes represents how much mice "want" alcohol and number of licks shows how much mice "like" alcohol. The number of nosepokes during withdrawal is a measure of craving. Late withdrawal craving was found when intermittent alcohol access was carried out in the automated cages. In this case, we observed a significant increase in the number of nosepokes on both withdrawal days 1 and 10 as compared to water control. The number of nosepokes in the withdrawal days did not correlate with alcohol dose, but number of nosepokes on withdrawal day 1 correlated with the number of nosepokes on the last training day. Although we did not observe incubation of alcohol craving after withdrawal, the craving was increased at the late time point. We conclude that we have established a new tool to study alcohol drinking behavior and craving in female mice.Peer reviewe

    Efficacy of salbutamol via Easyhaler®unaffected by low inspiratory flow

    AbstractThe fine particle dose delivered via dry powder inhalers (DPIs) is often affected by the inspiratory flow rate generated during inhalation. This has clinical implications, since the fine particle dose determines the amount of drug reaching the lungs. With Easyhaler®DPI the fine particle dose remains relatively constant over the range of inspiratory flow rates from 30–60 l min−1. The aim of this study was to confirm that clinical efficacy is maintained even at low flow rates by comparing the bronchodilating effect of salbutamol (100 μ g) delivered via Easyhaler®at a target inspiratory flow of 30 l min−1with the same dose of salbutamol via pressurised metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) plus spacer.This was a double-blind, randomized, cross-over study with double-dummy technique. Twenty-one paediatric and adult asthmatic patients completed the study, which was conducted over 2 study days. The main outcome parameter was forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1). The patients were trained to generate a low peak inspiratory flow rate (PIFR) of 30 l min−1, and the actual PIFR through Easyhaler®was recorded.The average PIFR through Easyhaler®was 28·7 l min−1. The difference in the maximum value of FEV1(FEV1max) between the treatments after drug inhalation was 0·01 l. The mean of FEV1maxwas 2·67 l after pMDI plus spacer compared to 2·69 l after Easyhaler®. Improvements in FEV1were clinically significant. No significant differences between treatments were found.A reasonably low inspiratory flow rate through Easyhaler®produces an equivalent improvement in lung function to a correctly used pMDI plus spacer. Hence, Easyhaler®can be used with confidence in patients who may have difficulty in generating a high inspiratory flow rate, such as children and the elderly

    Temperature dependence of the Brewer global UV measurements

    Spectral measurements of global UV irradiance recorded by Brewer spectrophotometers can be significantly affected by instrument-specific optical and mechanical features. Thus, proper corrections are needed in order to reduce the associated uncertainties to within acceptable levels. The present study aims to contribute to the reduction of uncertainties originating from changes in the Brewer internal temperature, which affect the performance of the optical and electronic parts, and subsequently the response of the instrument. Until now, measurements of the irradiance from various types of lamps at different temperatures have been used to characterize the instruments' temperature dependence. The use of 50 W lamps was found to induce errors in the characterization due to changes in the transmissivity of the Teflon diffuser as it warms up by the heat of the lamp. In contrast, the use of 200 or 1000 W lamps is considered more appropriate because they are positioned at longer distances from the diffuser so that warming is negligible. Temperature gradients inside the instrument can cause mechanical stresses which can affect the instrument's optical characteristics. Therefore, during the temperature-dependence characterization procedure warming or cooling must be slow enough to minimize these effects. In this study, results of the temperature characterization of eight different Brewer spectrophotometers operating in Greece, Finland, Germany and Spain are presented. It was found that the instruments' response changes differently in different temperature regions due to different responses of the diffusers' transmittance.     Maternal antibodies postpone hantavirus infection and enhance individual breeding success

    The transfer of maternal antibodies from mother to progeny is a well-known phenomenon in avian and mammalian species. Optimally, they protect the newborn against the pathogens in the environment. The effect of maternal antibodies on microparasite transmission dynamics may have important consequences for both the fitness of the host and the epizootic processes of the pathogens. However, there is a scarcity of studies examining these effects in free-living wild species. We studied the influence of maternal antibodies against the zoonotic Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) on the fitness of bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) and on PUUV transmission by exposing young maternal antibody-positive (MatAb+) and negative (MatAb−) bank voles (n=160) to PUUV in experimental populations. PUUV-specific maternal antibodies delayed the timing of infection. Females were more susceptible to PUUV infection than males. Interestingly, both the females and the males with maternal antibodies matured earlier than the other individuals in the population. Our results highlight the significance of maternal antibodies in the transmission of a pathogen and in the breeding success of the carriers
