    Attaching DNA to Nanoceria: Regulating Oxidase Activity and Fluorescence Quenching

In this work, we present a few important interfacial properties of nanoceria. First, the surface charge of nanoceria can be controlled not only by adjusting pH but also by adsorption of simple inorganic anions. Adsorption of phosphate and citrate gives negatively charged surface over a broad pH range. Second, nanoceria adsorbs DNA via the DNA phosphate backbone in a sequence-independent manner; DNA adsorption inhibits its oxidase activity. Other anionic polymers display much weaker inhibition effects. Adsorption of simple inorganic phosphate does not have the inhibition effect. Third, nanoceria is a quencher for many fluorophores.     Tunable emission properties of CdSe/CdS quantum dots by Ce doping

    A facile one-step hydrothermal synthesis to prepare cerium (Ce3+) ion doped CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots (QDs) is introduced. The effect of Ce3+ ion doping on structural and optical properties of the CdSe/CdS core/shell QDs is comprehensively investigated. With increasing Ce doping concentration, a linear increase in the lattice parameter is observed, suggesting the successful coupling of Ce3+ ions to the CdSe/CdS QDs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals strong peaks of the Ce3+ state, indicating that Ce is initially present mainly in the Ce3+ ion state. In addition, red-shift over the range 538–569 nm is observed in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of Ce3+ ion doped CdSe/CdS QDs. Results clearly indicates that the PL peak positions of the CdSe/CdS QDs could be controlled by the Ce content. This study highlights a new approach to tune the emission of the QDs

    Comparative Pulmonary Toxicity of Two Ceria Nanoparticles with the Same Primary Size

    Ceria nanoparticles (nano-ceria) have recently gained a wide range of applications, which might pose unwanted risks to both the environment and human health. The greatest potential for the environmental discharge of nano-ceria appears to be in their use as a diesel fuel additive. The present study was designed to explore the pulmonary toxicity of nano-ceria in mice after a single exposure via intratracheal instillation. Two types of nano-ceria with the same distribution of a primary size (3–5 nm), but different redox activity, were used: Ceria-p, synthesized by a precipitation route, and Ceria-h, synthesized by a hydrothermal route. Both Ceria-p and Ceria-h induced oxidative stress, inflammatory responses and cytotoxicity in mice, but their toxicological profiles were quite different. The mean size of Ceria-p agglomerates was much smaller compared to Ceria-h, thereby causing a more potent acute inflammation, due to their higher number concentration of agglomerates and higher deposition rate in the deep lung. Ceria-h had a higher reactivity to catalyzing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and caused two waves of lung injury: bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) inflammation and cytotoxicity in the early stage and redox-activity-evoked lipid peroxidation and pro-inflammation in the latter stage. Therefore, the size distribution of ceria-containing agglomerates in the exhaust, as well as their surface chemistry are essential characteristics to assess the potential risks of using nano-ceria as a fuel additive

    O uso da ultra-sonografia para diagnóstico de lesões da coluna vertebral é difundido desde a década de oitenta. Suas aplicações envolvem: diagnóstico de lesões medulares traumáticas; uso intra-operatório em cirurgias do trauma e tumores medulares; uso pré-operatório e evolutivo em pacientes com disrafismos espinhais; diagnóstico pré-natal dos disrafismos; diagnóstico dos disrafismos espinhais ocultos ao nascimento. Pacientes com suspeita de disrafismo espinhal oculto (estigmas cutâneos em linha média ou história familiar de disrafismos) representaram a principal indicação do exame que foi realizado em 292 pacientes do Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. Alterações como lipomas do cone medular, medula baixa, filo terminal espesso, cistos da ponta do cone medular e seios dérmicos foram identificados com fidelidade à ultra-sonografia. A interpretação do exame não apresentou dificuldades técnicas. Sua realização é rápida, não é necessária sedação, apresenta baixo custo e idealmente deve ser realizado pelo próprio neurocirurgião devido ao grande número de informações possíveis durante o exame. O exame entretanto não substitui a ressonância magnética mas pode ser um bom método de triagem para os pacientes.<br>Ultrasonography for diagnosis of spinal cord diseases has been used since the eighties. There are different fields for its use: traumatic spine lesions, intra-operative use in trauma and spine tumors surgery, pre-operative and follow up study for spinal dysraphism, occult spinal dysraphism of the newborn. Patients with suspected occult spinal dysraphism are the most important indication for the method. Utrasonography was performed in 292 patients of Hospital das Clínicas, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. Lesions such as conus medullaris lipomas, low level of conus medullaris, filum terminale tethering, cauda equina cysts and dermal sinuses can be well demonstrated. There is no difficulty in interpreting the image. The exam does not need sedation; it is safe, fast and cheap. Ideally it should be performed by the neurosurgeon as it may provide many information during the examination. The ultrasonography does not replace magnetic resonance imaging but it is an excellent method for screening
