ZEBISTIS tools and technologies for energy : energy toolbox

    Get PDF
One target of the ZEBISTIS-project was to find frame values for the planning of Zero Emission Buildings (ZEB) in the contributing countries (Germany, Switzerland, Korea, and Turkey). According to this separate toolboxes for energy, water, and biomass were defined. The energy toolbox refers to the “backbone” of every ZEB, which should lead to a massive reduction of the energy consumption

Energy toolbox : framework for the development of a tool for the primary design of zero emission buildings in european and asian cities

This paper discusses the framework for the development of an Energy Toolbox (ETB). The aim of the ETB is to support the design of domestic Zero Emission Buildings (ZEBs), according to the concept of net zero-energy buildings during the early architectural design and planning phases. The ETB concept is based on the calculation of the energy demand for heating, cooling, lighting, and appliances. Based on a building’s energy demand, technologies for the onsite conversion and production of the specific forms and quantities of final and primary energy by means of renewable energy carriers can be identified. The calculations of the ETB are based on the building envelope properties of a primary building design, as well as the physical and climate parameters required for the calculation of heat transfer coefficients, heat gains, and heat losses. The ETB enables the selection and rough dimensioning of technologies and systems to meet, and, wherever possible, reduce the thermal and electric energy demand of a building. The technologies included comprise green facades, adaptable dynamic lighting, shading devices, heat pumps, photovoltaic generators, solar thermal collectors, adiabatic cooling, and thermal storage. The ETB facilitates the balancing of the energy consumption and the production of renewable energies of a primary building design

Estimating the volume of the 1978 Rissa quick clay landslide in Central Norway using historical aerial imagery

Quick clay is found across Scandinavia and is especially prominent in south-eastern and central Norway. Quick clay is prone to failure and can cause landslides with high velocities and large run-outs. The 1978 Rissa landslide is one of the best-known quick clay landslides to have occurred in the last century, both due to its size and the fact that it was captured on film. In this article, we utilise Structure from Motion Multi-View Stereo (SfM-MVS) photogrammetry to process historical aerial photography from 1964 to 1978 and derive the first geodetic volume of the Rissa landslide. We found that the landslide covered a total onshore area of 0.36 km2 and had a geodetic volume of 2.53 ± 0.52 × 106 m3 with up to 20 m of surface elevation changes. Our estimate differs profusely from previous estimates by 43–56% which can partly be accounted for our analysis not being able to measure the portion of the landslide that occurred underwater, nor account for the material deposited within the landslide area. Given the accuracy and precision of our analyses, we believe that the total volume of the Rissa landslide may have been less than originally reported. The use of modern image processing techniques such as SfM-MVS for processing historical aerial photography is recommended for understanding landscape changes related to landslides, volcanoes, glaciers, or river erosion over large spatial and temporal scales.publishedVersio

Spontaneous localization of bulk fields: the six-dimensional case

We study N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories with d=6d=6 bulk and d=4d=4 brane fields charged under a U(1) gauge symmetry. Radiatively induced Fayet-Iliopoulos terms lead to an instability of the bulk fields. We compute the profile of the bulk zero modes and observe the phenomenon of spontaneous localization towards the position of the branes. While this mechanism is quite similar to the d=5d=5 case, the mass spectrum of the excited Kaluza-Klein modes shows a crucial difference.Comment: 23 pages, 3 figure file

NLRP1-Dependent Pyroptosis Leads to Acute Lung Injury and Morbidity in Mice

Acute inflammation in response to both exogenous and endogenous danger signals can lead to the assembly of cytoplasmic inflammasomes that stimulate the activation of caspase-1. Subsequently, caspase-1 facilitates the maturation and release of cytokines and also, under some circumstances, the induction of cell death by pyroptosis. Using a mouse line lacking expression of NLRP1, we show that assembly of this inflammasome in cells is triggered by a toxin from Anthrax and that it initiates caspase-1 activation and release of IL-1β. Furthermore, NLRP1 inflammasome activation also leads to cell death, which escalates over three days following exposure to the toxin and culminates in acute lung injury and death of the mice. We show that these events are not dependent on production of IL-1β by the inflammasome but are dependent on caspase-1 expression. In contrast, MDP mediated inflammasome formation is not dependent on NLRP1, but NLRP3. Taken together, our findings show that assembly of the NLRP1 inflammasome is sufficient to initiate pyroptosis, which subsequently leads to a self-amplifying cascade of cell injury within the lung from which the lung cannot recover, eventually resulting in catastrophic consequences for the organism

Subject of this work is the role played by propositional logic in Austrian math education. First the last decades of curriculum changes regarding this point will be analysed. Thereupon a selection of 9th grade schoolbooks will be reviewed. While doing this we will find that the growing influence of standardized tests goes together with disappearance of propositional logic from the curriculum. But does that mean logic has disappeared from math education for good? Behind quite a lot of math examples, there seems to be more logic hidden than one might think. This leads us to the question, if it really makes sense to renounce an explicit theming of propositional logic and its basic rules in class. Considering the fact that there barely is another chapter within maths as well as logic suited to talk about math being a unique language, it seems to me that it is reasonable to do so. Despite that propositional logic has a great value in terms of teaching the proper use of variables, translating problems from everyday language into math and some other
