    Novel adaptation of the spectral kurtosis for vibration diagnosis of gearboxes in non-stationary conditions

    In this paper, the adaptation of spectral kurtosis technology is proposed, demonstrated and experimentally validated. Raw data signals were collected from a single-stage gearbox run in different combinations of speed and load, after which time synchronous averaging was used to leave the classical residual signal once meshing harmonics were removed. Each data file is split into many individual realisations based on the time taken for the time synchronous average to converge on stable values, after which the short-time Fourier transform is used to calculate the spectral kurtosis for each realisation. The effects of adapting spectral kurtosis technology parameters such as the resolution and threshold used in creating a Wiener filter are evaluated, showing the effects on the consistent frequency bands identified throughout the realisations. Taking a baseline set of processing parameters, the probability of correct diagnosis was calculated using a three-stage decision-making technique incorporating the k-nearest neighbour and cluster analysis methods. Adaptation of the spectral kurtosis technology is then shown to dramatically improve the probability of correct diagnosis, highlighting that each speed and load case requires different resolution and threshold values to return the optimal result

    An incipient invasion of brown anole lizards (\u3cem\u3eAnolis sagrei\u3c/em\u3e) into their own native range in the Cayman Islands: a case of cryptic back-introduction

    Human-mediated dispersal has reshaped distribution patterns and biogeographic relationships for many taxa. Long-distance and over-water dispersal were historically rare events for most species, but now human activities can move organisms quickly over long distances to new places. A potential consequence of human-mediated dispersal is the eventual reintroduction of individuals from an invasive population back into their native range; a dimension of biological invasion termed “cryptic back-introduction.” We investigated whether this phenomenon was occurring in the Cayman Islands where brown anole lizards (Anolis sagrei) with red dewlaps (i.e., throat fans), either native to Little Cayman or invasive on Grand Cayman, have been found on Cayman Brac where the native A. sagrei have yellow dewlaps. Our analysis of microsatellite data shows strong population-genetic structure among the three Cayman Islands, but also evidence for non-equilibrium. We found some instances of intermediate multilocus genotypes (possibly 3–9% of individuals), particularly between Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac. Furthermore, analysis of dewlap reflectance data classified six males sampled on Cayman Brac as having red dewlaps similar to lizards from Grand Cayman and Little Cayman. Lastly, one individual from Cayman Brac had an intermediate microsatellite genotype, a red dewlap, and a mtDNA haplotype from Grand Cayman. This mismatch among genetic and phenotypic data strongly suggests that invasive A. sagrei from Grand Cayman are interbreeding with native A. sagrei on Cayman Brac. To our knowledge, this is the first evidence of cryptic back-introduction. Although we demonstrate this phenomenon is occurring in the Cayman Islands, assessing its frequency there and prevalence in other systems may prove difficult due to the need for genetic data in most instances. Cryptic back-introductions may eventually provide some insight into how lineages are changed by the invasion process and may be an underappreciated way in which invasive species impact native biodiversity

    Physical activity and sedentary behaviour in shift and non-shift workers: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Research examining the prevalence, physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour (SB) in shift workers show mixed results. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare PA and SB in shift workers with non-shift workers following the PRISMA guidelines. Ebscohost megafile ultimate (CINHAL, E-journals, Academic search ultimate, health source consumer edition, SPORT Discus), PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Science Direct databases were searched up to April 2021. Cross-sectional and baseline data from longitudinal studies reporting PA and SB in full time workers were eligible. Data on participants characteristics and time spent in PA and SB and/or prevalence of workers meeting PA guidelines were extracted and pooled with random effects model. The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) 10-item checklist was adapted and used. A total of 49 studies met inclusion criteria and 21 studies included for meta-analysis. The prevalence of meeting physical activity guidelines (OR 0.84, 95% CI: 0.68, 1.03) and standardized mean difference (SMD) of time spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (SMD -0.1, 95% CI: -0.4, 0.20) were similar in shift and non-shift workers. Time spent in sedentary behaviour was lower in shift workers than non-shift workers (SMD -0.2, 95% CI: 0.50, -0.001). While the differences in PA are not so evident between shift and non-shift workers, the prevalence of sufficient PA was low in both groups. These preliminary findings provide support for inclusion of physical activity and sedentary behaviour in health promotion interventions targeted at shift workers

    Controversies in the Science of Sedentary Behaviour and Health: Insights, Perspectives and Future Directions from the 2018 Queensland Sedentary Behaviour Think Tank

    The development in research concerning sedentary behaviour has been rapid over the past two decades. This has led to the development of evidence and views that have become more advanced, diverse and, possibly, contentious. These include the effects of standing, the breaking up of prolonged sitting and the role of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in the association between sedentary behaviour and health outcomes. The present aim is to report the views of experts (n = 21) brought together (one-day face-to-face meeting in 2018) to consider these issues and provide conclusions and recommendations for future work. Each topic was reviewed and presented by one expert followed by full group discussion, which was recorded, transcribed and analysed. The experts concluded that (a). standing may bring benefits that accrue from postural shifts. Prolonged (mainly static) standing and prolonged sitting are both bad for health; (b). ‘the best posture is the next posture’. Regularly breaking up of sitting with postural shifts and movement is vital; (c). health effects of prolonged sitting are evident even after controlling for MVPA, but high levels of MVPA can attenuate the deleterious effects of prolonged sitting depending on the health outcome of interest.     Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∌99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∌1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

    Novel Prediction of Diagnosis Effectiveness for Adaptation of the Spectral Kurtosis Technology to Varying Operating Conditions

    In this paper, two novel consistency vectors are proposed, which when combined with appropriate machine learning algorithms, can be used to adapt the Spectral Kurtosis technology for optimum gearbox damage diagnosis in varying operating conditions. Much of the existing research in the field is limited to test apparatus run in constant and carefully controlled operating conditions, and the authors have previously publicised that the Spectral Kurtosis technology requires adaptation to achieve the highest possible probabilities of correct diagnosis when a gearbox is run in non-stationary conditions of speed and load. However, the authors’ previous adaptation has been computationally heavy using a brute-force approach unsuited to online use, and therefore, created the requirement to develop these two newly proposed vectors and allow computationally lighter techniques more suited to online condition monitoring. The new vectors are demonstrated and experimentally validated on vibration data collected from a gearbox run in multiple combinations of operating conditions; for the first time, the two consistency vectors are used to predict diagnosis effectiveness, with the comparison and proof of relative gains between the traditional and novel techniques discussed. Consistency calculations are computationally light and thus, many combinations of Spectral Kurtosis technology parameters can be evaluated on a dataset in a very short time. This study shows that machine learning can predict the total probability of correct diagnosis from the consistency values and this can quickly provide pre-adaptation/prediction of optimum Spectral Kurtosis technology parameters for a dataset. The full adaptation and damage evaluation process, which is computationally heavier, can then be undertaken on a much lower number of combinations of Spectral Kurtosis resolution and threshold

    The Feasibility of a Text-Messaging Intervention Promoting Physical Activity in Shift Workers : A Process Evaluation

    Workplace health promotion programs (WHPPs) can improve shift workers’ physical activity. The purpose of this paper is to present the process evaluation of a text messaging health promotion intervention for mining shift workers during a 24-day shift cycle. Data collected from intervention participants with a logbook (n = 25) throughout the intervention, exit interviews (n = 7) and online surveys (n = 17) examined the WHPP using the RE-AIM (Reach, Efficacy, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance) framework. The program reached 66% of workers across three departments, with 15% of participants dropping out. The program showed the potential to be adopted if the recruitment strategies are improved to reach more employees, especially when involving work managers for recruitment. A few changes were made to the program, and participant adherence was high. Facilitators to adopt and implement the health promotion program included the use of text messaging to improve physical activity, feedback on behaviour, and providing incentives. Work-related fatigue was reported as a barrier to implementing the program. Participants reported that they would recommend the program to other workers and use the Mi fitness band to continue monitoring and improving their health behaviour. This study showed that shift workers were optimistic about health promotion. Allowing for long-term evaluation and involving the company management to determine scale-up should be considered for future programs.peerReviewe
