    The Roles of Self-Esteem and Attachment within the Framework of Terror Management Theory

    Built upon the idea that human beings, as the only species whose members are aware of their own consciousness and future death, have to come up with a system to deal with this awareness, Terror Management theory aims to shed light on the mechanisms that human beings have developed in order to avoid the cold fact of death. According to Terror Management Theory, culture serves as an anxiety buffer against death by offering either a literal or symbolic immortality. The sense of protection and safety provided by the parental care in childhood is sought in the worldview in adulthood; just like a child acting in a way to please her/his parents to maintain their affection and care, an adult attains the sense of safety by acting in compliance to her/his worldview. At this point, self-esteem comes into the equation; individuals with high self-esteem experience more sense of compliance with their worldview than those with low self-esteem, and they feel less anxiety when their mortality is reminded to them. Recent research links these with attachment styles. Relationships with the environment and the primary caregiver in early childhood can be determinative on self-esteem. In this study, it is aimed to review the ideas presented here and developed within the framework of Terror Management Theory, and to discuss the benefits that can be drawn from their findings, especially in regards to clinical applications

    Comparison of synchronisation and fertility after different modifications of the ovsynch protocol in cyclic dairy cows

    The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of (1) double doses of PGF2α administration or (2) an exogenous progesterone (CIDR) applied concurrently with, or (3) the day after, first GnRH of Ovsynch (GnRH-1), on synchronisation and fertility during the Ovsynch protocol. All cows (n = 378) received the Ovsynch protocol (GnRH-7d-PGF2α-56h-GnRH-18h-TAI). The ‘OVS’ group (n = 105) received only the Ovsynch protocol. The ‘OVS-PGF’ group (n = 118, GnRH-7d-PGF2α-12h-PGF2α-44h-GnRH-18h-TAI) received an extra dose of PGF2α 12 h later on Day 7. The ‘OVS-7CIDR’ group (n = 78, GnRH+CIDR-7d-PGF2α-56h-GnRH-18h-TAI) received a CIDR for 7 days between GnRH-1 and PGF2α. In the ‘OVS-6CIDR’ group (n = 77, GnRH-24h-CIDR-6d-PGF2α-56h-GnRH-18h-TAI), CIDR was applied one day after GnRH-1 and removed 6 days later. When all cows were evaluated, the responses to GnRH-2 were higher (P = 0.005) in cows that responded to GnRH-1 (95.4%) compared to the cows that did not respond (87.6%). The pregnancy rates at 31 and 62 days for each group were 48.6% and 42.9% in the OVS, 54.2% and 52.5% in the OVS-PGF, 52.6% and 48.7% in the OVS-7CIDR, and 55.8% and 49.3% in the OVS-6CIDR groups. Thus, none of the three different treatments has an effect on increasing the out-comes of the Ovsynch protocol in cyclic lactating dairy cows

    Natural β-chitin-protein complex film obtained from waste razor shells for transdermal capsaicin carrier

    In the literature, the produced β-chitin samples are in powder or flake forms but there is no natural β-chitin based film. Also, the commercially available transdermal patches are produced from synthetic polymers. In this regard,we produced natural β-chitin-protein complex (CPC) film fromthewaste shells of Ensis spp. The obtained natural filmwas characterized by FTIR, TGA and SEM. Additionally, swelling, thickness, contact angle and antioxidant tests were done to learn more about the films. After production and characterization of the film, capsaicin, which is commonly used for pain reliefwas loaded into the film. The loading capacitywas recorded as 5.79%. The kineticmodelswere studied in three different pH, then the resultswere fittedwith Higuchimodelwith high correlation at pH 7.4.     Cross-Cultural Research on Psychotherapy: The Need for a Change

    Psychotherapy models, some of which now have a history over a century, have been practiced worldwide. However, considering that the most prevalently applied psychotherapy models are the products of Western culture, questioning the extent of these models' effectiveness and efficiency for people belonging to diverse cultural backgrounds is legitimate. No doubt, ethno-cultural groups living in Western multicultural societies will interact with Western culture more deeply compared with people living in non-Western countries; therefore, to also think that their needs will differ is reasonable. In this case, the quantity and quality of the required adaptations may also change. Although a promising number of studies exist on intercultural adaptations necessitated by the needs of multicultural societies, the literature on the effectiveness of these models in the non-Western world and the local psychotherapy models is quite limited. One important question is whether psychotherapy models can be adapted to address non-Western cultures without transforming their fundamental assumptions, and if so, can this be conducted efficiently? With these questions in mind, the aim is to review the current state of scientific studies on psychotherapy practices in various cultures. In addition, considering the large spectrum of cultural migration taking place in modern days and the difficulty of receiving mental health services in underdeveloped countries, the importance of adapted and local psychotherapy research has been emphasized and some suggestions for consideration in future research have been made

    The impact of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on erectile functions and serum testosterone levels in patients with erectile dysfunction

    Objective: To evaluate the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on erectile functions and serum testosterone levels in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED). Methods: The patients treated by HBOT for several diseases between July 2017-May 2018 and had erectile dysfunction were included in the study. All patients filled the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire form; serum total testosterone (TT) and free testosterone (FT) levels were examined before the first day and after the last day of HBOT. The effects of demographic characteristics of patients on erectile functions were evaluated. Patients were categorized according to the risk factors. The IIEF scores, TT and FT levels of patients in first day and after last day of HBOT were compared. Results: Totally 43 patients were included in the study. The mean post-HBOT IIEF-EF score was significantly higher than the mean pre-HBOT IIEF-EF score of patients (25.4 +/- 5.3 vs 20.6 +/- 5.1; p < .001). There was no statistical difference between the pre-HBOT and post-HBOT serum TT and FT levels of patients (4.0 +/- 2.3 ng/ml vs 4.1 +/- 2.0 ng/ml, p = .797; 8.6 +/- 3.8 pg/ml vs 8.9 +/- 3.5 pg/ml, p = .658). Conclusions: HBOT improved the erectile functions in ED patients however we cannot detect any effect on testosterone levels in our study

    Operating principles and practical design aspects of all SiC DC/AC/DC converter for MPPT in grid-connected PV supplies

    A 20 kW, 20 kHz high frequency (HF) link maximum power point tracking (MPPT) converter for a grid-connected PV supply, based on all silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors, is presented. In the developed converter, SiC power MOSFETs are used in the low-voltage PV panel side and SiC Schottky diodes on the high-voltage DC output, in order to maximize the power conversion efficiency and the power density. Operating principles of the resulting dual H-bridge MPPT converter and the practical aspects of the converter design and its circuit layout, are described in detail. The implemented converter performance is compared with that of a classical Si-IGBT and hybrid-IGBT based MPPT converter in terms of efficiency. This configuration can compete with the non-isolated MPPT converter topologies, such as the boost converter commonly used in grid-connected PV systems, since it allows the possibility of using a conventional two-level, three-phase grid-connected inverter. This is due to the enhanced common-mode EMI performance as compared to non-isolated MPPT topologies, resulting in a competitive high efficiency PV converter design with galvanic isolation. It has been shown that the converter size can be shrinked up to a power density of 1.6 kW/lt, with a DC-DC converter full-load efficiency of 98%. The resulting compact and highly efficient SiC power MOSFET based HF link MPPT converter is suggested to be a part of grid-connected, multi-string PV supplies with simple inverter topologies in the future

    Custody and prison deaths autopsied in Istanbul between 2010 and 2012

    The occurred death of a convict in prison, police custody cell or in a hospital always attracts public attention and can be considered as a complex phenomenon. The aim of this study is to evaluate the data obtained from autopsies performed to the custody and prison deaths in Istanbul and to discuss the possible solutions by comparing with the literature. It is also aimed to discuss the postponement of the sentence and presidential amnesty facts in Turkey. Deaths of inmates, which occurred in hospitals, prisons, prison medical rooms, police vans and police custody cells between 2010 and 2012 in Istanbul, Turkey were included in the study. Totally 125 cases were found and 98.4% of them were male. Natural deaths accounted for a great majority of deaths (83.2%). The most common natural cause was cardiovascular diseases. Unnatural deaths accounted for 15.2% of the deaths. Death reason cannot be determined for 1.6% of the cases. More than half of the cases (56%) were died at the hospital, 34.4% were died at the prison, 4% of them at the police van, 3.2% were died under police custody and 2.4% were died at the prison medical room. Moreover, twelve of these cases had applied to Third Specialization Board previously for postponement of the sentence or Presidential amnesty. Totally five of these cases found suitable for postponement of the sentence. Prison conditions should be improved, prisoners with chronic diseases should be examined periodically and if appropriate their sentences should be postponed until they heal.     The Effect of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy on Erectile Functions: A Prospective Clinical Study

    Introduction: We aimed to evaluate the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on erectile function in patients who had no cavernosal or urethral injury by using International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire. Materials and Methods: The male patients who were treated by HBOT for several diseases between July 2017 and September 2017 were examined. All patients filled the IIEF questionnaire form before the first day and after the last day of HBOT and a questionnaire including demographic characteristics and medical history. The effects of demographic characteristics and risk factors on erectile function were evaluated, and the IIEF domain scores of patients in first day and last day of HBOT were compared. Results: Totally, 50 patients were included in the study between July 2017 and September 2017 and the mean age was 59.38 +/- 13.77. The mean post-HBOT IIEF-EF score of patients was significantly higher than the mean pre-HBOT IIEF-EF score of patients (15.74 +/- 10.52 vs. 19.50 +/- 10.91; p < 0.001). The mean post-HBOT IIEF scores of other domains including intercourse satisfaction, orgasmic function, sexual desire, and overall satisfaction were also significantly higher than pre-HBOT scores.     Effects of iloprost on lipid peroxidation parameters in cerebral hypoperfusion model induced by right common carotid artery occlusion

    Our aim was to study effects of iloprost on lipid peroxidation parameters in cerebral hypoperfusion model induced by right common carotid artery occlusion. The rats were divided into 4 weight-matched groups. Sham-operated group (S) (n=10); Hypoperfused (H) (n=10); Early iloprost administered after hypoperfusion (HE) (n= 10); Late iloprost administered after hypoperfusion (HQ (n=10). Plasma MDA levels of H, HE and HL groups were significantly higher than S group (respectively p<0.001. p<0.05. p<0.001). Values of intraerythrocytic Cu-Zn SOD activity of H. HE and HL groups were significantly higher than those of S group (p<0.001). The right hemisphere tissue MDA levels of S group were highest (P<0.05). HE group right hemisphere Cu-Zn SOD activity was higher than other groups, on the other hand HL group right hemisphere Cu-Zn SOD activity significantly lower than other groups (p<0.001). Our findings revealed that the early iloprost treatment might be protected the brain tissue from oxidative damage
