Computational methods for global/local analysis
Computational methods for global/local analysis of structures which include both uncoupled and coupled methods are described. In addition, global/local analysis methodology for automatic refinement of incompatible global and local finite element models is developed. Representative structural analysis problems are presented to demonstrate the global/local analysis methods
Lessons Learned from Recent Failure and Incident Investigations of Composite Structures
During the past few decades, NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) has supported several large-scale failure and incident investigations and numerous requests for engineering consultations. Although various extenuating circumstances contributed to each of these incidents, in all cases, the failure resulted from accumulation and/or propagation of damage that reduced the load carrying capability of the structure to a level below that which was needed to sustain structural loads. A brief overview of various failure and incident investigations supported by LaRC, including some of the computational and experimental methodologies that have been applied, is presented. An important outcome of many of these failure and incident investigations is the development of an improved understanding of not only the state-of-the-art in experimental and analytical methods but also the state-of-the-art in the design and manufacturing processes that may contribute to such failures. In order to provide insight into such large-scale investigations, a series of lessons learned were captured. Awareness of these lessons learned is highly beneficial to engineers involved in similar investigations. Therefore, it is prudent that the lessons learned are disseminated such that they can be built upon in other investigations and in ensuing research and development activities
Enhancement of the electric dipole moment of the electron in the YbF molecule
We calculate an effective electric field on the unpaired electron in the YbF
molecule. This field determines sensitivity of the molecular experiment to the
electric dipole moment of the electron. We use experimental value of the
spin-doubling constant to estimate the admixture of the configuration with the
hole in the 4f-shell of Ytterbium to the ground state of the molecule. This
admixture reduces the field by 7%. Our value for the effictive field is 5.1
a.u. = 2.5 10^{10} V/cm.Comment: 5 pages, LATEX, uses revtex.st
Spitzer UltRa Faint SUrvey Program (SURFS UP). II. IRAC-Detected Lyman-Break Galaxies at 6 < z < 10 Behind Strong-Lensing Clusters
We study the stellar population properties of the IRAC-detected galaxy candidates from the Spitzer UltRa Faint SUrvey Program
(SURFS UP). Using the Lyman Break selection technique, we find a total of 16
new galaxy candidates at with in at
least one of the IRAC m and m bands. According to the best mass
models available for the surveyed galaxy clusters, these IRAC-detected galaxy
candidates are magnified by factors of --. We find that the
IRAC-detected sample is likely not a homogeneous
galaxy population: some are relatively massive (stellar mass as high as ) and evolved (age Myr) galaxies, while
others are less massive () and very
young ( Myr) galaxies with strong nebular emission lines that boost
their rest-frame optical fluxes. We identify two Ly emitters in our
sample from the Keck DEIMOS spectra, one at (in
RXJ1347) and one at (in MACS0454). We show that IRAC
color, when combined with photometric redshift, can be used to
identify galaxies likely with strong nebular emission lines within certain

Electric dipole moment of the electron in YbF molecule
Ab initio calculation of the hyperfine, P-odd, and P,T-odd constants for the
YbF molecule was performed with the help of the recently developed technique,
which allows to take into account correlations and polarization in the
outercore region. The ground state electronic wave function of the YbF molecule
is found with the help of the Relativistic Effective Core Potential method
followed by the restoration of molecular four-component spinors in the core
region of ytterbium in the framework of a non-variational procedure. Core
polarization effects are included with the help of the atomic Many Body
Perturbation Theory for Yb atom. For the isotropic hyperfine constant A,
accuracy of our calculation is about 3% as compared to the experimental datum.
The dipole constant Ad (which is much smaller in magnitude), though better than
in all previous calculations, is still underestimated by almost 23%. Being
corrected within a semiempirical approach for a perturbation of 4f-shell in the
core of Yb due to the bond making, this error is reduced to 8%. Our value for
the effective electric field on the unpaired electron is 4.9 a.u.=2.5E+10 V/cm.Comment: 7 pages, REVTE
Synergies for Improving Oil Palm Production and Forest Conservation in Floodplain Landscapes
Lowland tropical forests are increasingly threatened with conversion to oil palm as global demand and high profit drives crop expansion throughout the world’s tropical regions. Yet, landscapes are not homogeneous and regional constraints dictate land suitability for this crop. We conducted a regional study to investigate spatial and economic components of forest conversion to oil palm within a tropical floodplain in the Lower Kinabatangan, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. The Kinabatangan ecosystem harbours significant biodiversity with globally threatened species but has suffered forest loss and fragmentation. We mapped the oil palm and forested landscapes (using object-based-image analysis, classification and regression tree analysis and on-screen digitising of high-resolution imagery) and undertook economic modelling. Within the study region (520,269 ha), 250,617 ha is cultivated with oil palm with 77% having high Net-Present-Value (NPV) estimates (637/ha?yr); but 20.5% is under-producing. In fact 6.3% (15,810 ha) of oil palm is commercially redundant (with negative NPV of -65/ha?yr) due to palm mortality from flood inundation. These areas would have been important riparian or flooded forest types. Moreover, 30,173 ha of unprotected forest remain and despite its value for connectivity and biodiversity 64% is allocated for future oil palm. However, we estimate that at minimum 54% of these forests are unsuitable for this crop due to inundation events. If conversion to oil palm occurs, we predict a further 16,207 ha will become commercially redundant. This means that over 32,000 ha of forest within the floodplain would have been converted for little or no financial gain yet with significant cost to the ecosystem. Our findings have globally relevant implications for similar floodplain landscapes undergoing forest transformation to agriculture such as oil palm. Understanding landscape level constraints to this crop, and transferring these into policy and practice, may provide conservation and economic opportunities within these seemingly high opportunity cost landscapes
Can spacetime curvature induced corrections to Lamb shift be observable?
The Lamb shift results from the coupling of an atom to vacuum fluctuations of
quantum fields, so corrections are expected to arise when the spacetime is
curved since the vacuum fluctuations are modified by the presence of spacetime
curvature. Here, we calculate the curvature-induced correction to the Lamb
shift outside a spherically symmetric object and demonstrate that this
correction can be remarkably significant outside a compact massive
astrophysical body. For instance, for a neutron star or a stellar mass black
hole, the correction is 25% at a radial distance of ,
16% at and as large as 1.6% even at , where is
the mass of the object, the Newtonian constant, and the speed of light.
In principle, we can look at the spectra from a distant compact super-massive
body to find such corrections. Therefore, our results suggest a possible way of

On the evolution of superposition of squeezed displaced number states with the multiphoton Jaynes-Cummings model
In this paper we discuss the quantum properties for superposition of squeezed
displaced number states against multiphoton Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM). In
particular, we investigate atomic inversion, photon-number distribution,
purity, quadrature squeezing, Mandel parameter and Wigner function. We show
that the quadrature squeezing for three-photon absorption case can exhibit
revivals and collapses typical to those occurring in the atomic inversion for
one-photon absorption case. Also we prove that for odd number absorption
parameter there is a connection between the evolution of the atomic inversion
and the evolution of the Wigner function at the origin in phase space.
Furthermore, we show that the nonclassical states whose the Wigner functions
values at the origins are negative will be always nonclassical when they are
evolving through the JCM with even absorption parameter. Also we demonstrate
that various types of cat states can be generated via this system.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figure
Entrepreneurial sons, patriarchy and the Colonels' experiment in Thessaly, rural Greece
Existing studies within the field of institutional entrepreneurship explore how entrepreneurs influence change in economic institutions. This paper turns the attention of scholarly inquiry on the antecedents of deinstitutionalization and more specifically, the influence of entrepreneurship in shaping social institutions such as patriarchy. The paper draws from the findings of ethnographic work in two Greek lowland village communities during the military Dictatorship (1967–1974). Paradoxically this era associated with the spread of mechanization, cheap credit, revaluation of labour and clear means-ends relations, signalled entrepreneurial sons’ individuated dissent and activism who were now able to question the Patriarch’s authority, recognize opportunities and act as unintentional agents of deinstitutionalization. A ‘different’ model of institutional change is presented here, where politics intersects with entrepreneurs, in changing social institutions. This model discusses the external drivers of institutional atrophy and how handling dissensus (and its varieties over historical time) is instrumental in enabling institutional entrepreneurship
