    ‘Hoovering up the Money’? : Delivering government-funded capacity-building programmes to voluntary and community organisations

    The 'ChangeUp' and FutureBuilders initiatives have provided substantial funding to support and facilitate 'capacity building' in voluntary and community organisations and so enable them to contribute to the achievement of public and social policy goals. This paper builds on findings from a study of an early 'capacity-building' programme delivered between 1998 and 2005. We explore the challenges of implementing such initiatives for voluntary sector intermediary bodies involved in delivering them and for the voluntary and community organisations intended as the main beneficiaries.     Positive impacts of a STEM-centered university service-learning course

    Service-learning courses have become increasingly popular at universities over the past decade. Fostering Our Community’s Understanding of Science, known as Project FOCUS, has been a service-learning course at the University of Georgia for the past 13 years. Undergraduate students collaborate with teachers in the community to teach hands-on science lessons to elementary and middle school students. The course has enrolled over 1000 undergraduates, who have taught science to an estimated 25,000 local students. Students enrolled in this course experience increased interest in community involvement and teaching science. This poster is an informative glance at Project FOCUS as recommendations for K-12 administrators and university professors interested in designing a successful STEM outreach program.     Acute Stress Attenuates Cognitive Flexibility in Males Only: An fNIRS Examination

    Cognitive processes that afford us the ability to control thoughts and achieve goal-directed behavior are known as executive functions. Empirical evidence in the past few years has demonstrated that executive functions can be influenced by acute stress. The impact of acute stress on cognitive flexibility, a key aspect of executive functions, has received little attention in the literature. We present the results of two experiments conducted to examine the effect of acute stress on cognitive flexibility. Acute stress was induced using the cold pressor task. Cognitive flexibility was assessed using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Across both experiments acute stress had an attenuating effect on task switching on the WCST. Our findings also indicate that this effect was moderated by the participant’s gender. In Study 1, we observed that following stress exposure male participants in the stress condition made more perseverative errors than participants in the control group. In Study 2, we examined the bilateral hemodynamics in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) during acute stress induction using functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Our analysis indicated that functional oxyHb signals fluctuated with greater amplitude than systemic components for participants in the stress group relative to those in the control group. In addition, oxyHb levels post stress induction were correlated with performance on the WCST for the male participants in the stress group only. Concordant with previous reports, our findings indicate that acute stress impacts cognitive flexibility in males and females differentially. Our work also demonstrates the feasibility of using fNIRS as a practical and objective technique for the examination of hemodynamics in the PFC during acute stress

Until recently, men from Panapompom understood themselves to be engaged in a project of ‘development’, in which they would become more and more similar to white people. This was a desirable future. However, changes in the way Panapompom men work for money have resulted in a very different imagination of the future—one in which Panapompom people are not getting whiter, but blacker, and hence more and more excluded from the lives to which they aspire. Men now dive for bĂȘche-de-mer, work which they regard as being particularly hard and dangerous. Diving has profound effects on the skin, blackening and hardening it, leading Panapompom men to liken themselves to the machines that create the wealth that white people use. These ‘mechanising’ effects that diving has on the black body lead men to see white people as the sole beneficiaries of the bĂȘche-de-mer industry, and black people as mere tools or extensions. For bĂȘche-de-mer divers, value and desired forms of life are lodged in Australia, Europe or America, while they find themselves excluded from this future by their growing blackness.ESR

    Unconventional crystal structure of the high-pressure superconductor La3_3Ni2_2O7_7

    The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in La3_3Ni2_2O7_7 at pressures above 14 GPa has spurred extensive research efforts. Yet, fundamental aspects of the superconducting phase, including the possibility of a filamentary character, are currently subjects of controversial debates. Conversely, a crystal structure with NiO6_6 octahedral bilayers stacked along the cc-axis direction was consistently posited in initial studies on La3_3Ni2_2O7_7. Here we reassess this structure in optical floating zone-grown La3_3Ni2_2O7_7 single crystals that show signs of filamentary superconductivity. Employing scanning transmission electron microscopy and single-crystal x-ray diffraction under high pressures, we observe multiple crystallographic phases in these crystals, with the majority phase exhibiting alternating monolayers and trilayers of NiO6_6 octahedra, signifying a profound deviation from the previously suggested bilayer structure. Using density functional theory, we disentangle the individual contributions of the monolayer and trilayer structural units to the electronic band structure of La3_3Ni2_2O7_7, providing a firm basis for advanced theoretical modeling and future evaluations of the potential of the monolayer-trilayer structure for hosting superconductivity
