Experimental and numerical study of SiON microresonators with air and polymer cladding

Get PDF
A systematic experimental and numerical study of the device performance of waveguide-coupled SiON microresonators with air and polymer cladding is presented. Values of device parameters like propagation losses of the microresonator modes, the off-resonance insertion losses, and the straight waveguide to microresonator coupling are determined by applying a detailed fitting procedure to the experimental results and compared to results of detailed numerical simulations. By comparing the propagation losses of the fundamental TE polarized microresonator mode obtained by fitting to the measured spectra to the also experimentally determined propagation losses in the adjacent straight waveguide and the materials losses, it is possible to identify the loss mechanisms in the microresonator. By comparing experimental results for microresonators with air and polymethylmethacrylate cladding and a detailed numerical study, the influence of the cladding index on the bend losses is evaluated. It is demonstrated that the presence of an upper cladding can, under the right conditions, actually be beneficial for loss reduction

Augmented reality-based remote family visits in nursing homes

Get PDF
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many nursing homes had to restrict visitations. This had a major negative impact on the wellbeing of residents and their family members. In response, residents and family members increasingly resorted to mediated communication to maintain social contact. To facilitate high-quality mediated social contact between residents in nursing homes and remote family members, we developed an augmented reality (AR)-based communication tool. In this study, we compared the user experience (UX) of AR-communication with that of video calling, for 10 pairs of residents and family members. We measured enjoyment, spatial presence and social presence, attitudes, behavior and conversation duration. In the AR-communication condition, residents perceived a 3D projection of their remote family member onto a chair placed in front of them. In the video calling condition, the family member was shown using 2D video. In both conditions, the family member perceived the resident in the video calling mode on a 2D screen. While residents reported no differences in their UX between both conditions, family members reported higher spatial presence for the AR-communication condition compared to video-calling. Conversation durations were significantly longer during AR-communication than during video calling. We tentatively suggest that there may be (unconscious) differences in UX during AR-based communication compared to video calling

Laser Ablation -Ion Storage Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry

Abstract A new mass spectrometer system was developed for studying laser ablation and performing analytical chemistry. The system is based on an ion trap used in an ion-storage (IS) mode, coupled with a reflectron time of flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS). The LA-IS/TOF-MS can be used for MALDI or direct ionization of samples on a probe tip. This paper will describe the system configuration and related operating principles for measuring sensitive and accurate isotopic ratios. Preliminary measurements identified ultra-trace contaminants of Ag, Sn, and Sb in a Pb target with single laser-shot experiments. Survey analyses of uranyl acetate, hair samples, and mushrooms demonstrated that this technology can be applied to a wide range of sample materials

Dissolved iron in the Arctic shelf seas and surface waters of the Central Arctic Ocean: Impact of Arctic river water and ice-melt

Get PDF
Key Points - DFe in the Arctic shelves and surface is linked to freshwater and alkalinity - Fluvial input main contributor to high DFe, low alkalinity in Central Arctic - Remineralisation and biological depletion determine DFe in the Arctic Shelf Seas Abstract Concentrations of dissolved (10 nM) in the bottom waters of the Laptev Sea shelf may be attributed to either sediment resuspension, sinking of brine or regeneration of DFe in the lower layers. A significant correlation (R2 = 0.60) between salinity and DFe is observed. Using δ18O, salinity ,nutrients and total alkalinity data, the main source for the high (>2 nM) DFe concentrations in the Amundsen and Makarov Basins is identified as (Eurasian) river water, transported with the Transpolar Drift (TPD). On the North American side of the TPD, the DFe concentrations are low ( 4) above the shelf and low ( < 4) off the shelf)

Surgical Outcome of Children with a Malignant Liver Tumour in The Netherlands:A Retrospective Consecutive Cohort Study

INTRODUCTION: Six to eight children are diagnosed with a malignant liver tumour yearly in the Netherlands. The majority of these tumours are hepatoblastoma (HB) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), for which radical resection, often in combination with chemotherapy, is the only curative treatment option. We investigated the surgical outcome of children with a malignant liver tumour in a consecutive cohort in the Netherlands. METHODS: In this nationwide, retrospective observational study, all patients (age < 18 years) diagnosed with a malignant liver tumour, who underwent partial liver resection or orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) between January 2014 and April 2021, were included. Children with a malignant liver tumour who were not eligible for surgery were excluded from the analysis. Data regarding tumour characteristics, diagnostics, treatment, complications and survival were collected. Outcomes included major complications (Clavien-Dindo ≥ 3a) within 90 days and disease-free survival. The results of the HB group were compared to those of a historical HB cohort. RESULTS: Twenty-six children were analysed, of whom fourteen (54%) with HB (median age 21.5 months), ten (38%) with HCC (median age 140 months) and one with sarcoma and a CNSET. Thirteen children with HB (93%) and three children with HCC (30%) received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Partial hepatic resection was possible in 19 patients (12 HB, 6 HCC, and 1 sarcoma), whilst 7 children required OLT (2 HB, 4 HCC, and 1 CNSET). Radical resection (R0, margin ≥ 1.0 mm) was obtained in 24 out of 26 patients, with recurrence only in the patient with CNSET. The mean follow-up was 39.7 months (HB 40 months, HCC 40 months). Major complications occurred in 9 out of 26 patients (35% in all, 4 of 14, 29% for HB). There was no 30- or 90-day mortality, with disease-free survival after surgery of 100% for HB and 80% for HCC, respectively. Results showed a tendency towards a better outcome compared to the historic cohort, but numbers were too small to reach significance. CONCLUSION: Survival after surgical treatment for malignant liver tumours in the Netherlands is excellent. Severe surgical complications arise in one-third of patients, but most resolve without long-term sequelae and have no impact on long-term survival

Three-Dimensional Mapping of Hippocampal Anatomy in Adolescents With Bipolar Disorder

Get PDF
Early-onset bipolar disorder is thought to be a particularly severe variant of the illness. Continuity with the adult form of illness remains unresolved, but preliminary evidence suggests similar biological underpinnings. Recently, we observed localized hippocampal decreases in unmedicated adults with bipolar disorder that were not detectable with conventional volumetric measures. Using the same three-dimensional mapping methods, we sought to investigate whether a similar pattern exists in adolescents with bipolar disorder
