Glycemic response of poultries in different feeding systems
The management of poultry feed is an important welfare promoter and the glycemic index a noninvasive evaluation. The aim was to evaluate the glycemic response of broiler breeders in restricted feeding system, and broilers receiving ad libitum feeding. Two experiments were carried out: I) 39-week-oldbroiler breeders, fed with three sources of fiber, in a completely randomized design in factorial scheme (3 fiber diets x 7 collection periods); and II) broilers, 42 days old, housed in different light systems, in a completely randomized design in factorial design (2 sexes x 2 lighting conditions x 13 collection periods). Blood glucose levels were measured at random collecting one blood drop from foot, with three replicates in each condition and treatment. In broiler breeder different fiber sources had no effect on glycemia, but the period affected circulating glucose levels, presenting a minimum of 184.3 mg dL -1 before feed and, a maximum of 242.5 mg dL -1 four hours after feeding. In broilers, there was a significant effect in glycemia for collection period and for sex, and interaction between lighting conditions and collection period. Further studies are needed to establish reference values to compare blood glucose levels in poultry.41
Negotiating the inhuman: Bakhtin, materiality and the instrumentalization of climate change
The article argues that the work of literary theorist Mikhail M. Bakhtin presents a starting point for thinking about the instrumentalization of climate change. Bakhtin’s conceptualization of human–world relationships, encapsulated in the concept of ‘cosmic terror’, places a strong focus on our perception of the ‘inhuman’. Suggesting a link between the perceived alienness and instability of the world and in the exploitation of the resulting fear of change by political and religious forces, Bakhtin asserts that the latter can only be resisted if our desire for a false stability in the world is overcome. The key to this overcoming of fear, for him, lies in recognizing and confronting the worldly relations of the human body. This consciousness represents the beginning of one’s ‘deautomatization’ from following established patterns of reactions to predicted or real changes. In the vein of several theorists and artists of his time who explored similar ‘deautomatization’ strategies – examples include Shklovsky’s ‘ostranenie’, Brecht’s ‘Verfremdung’, Artaud’s emotional ‘cruelty’ and Bataille’s ‘base materialism’ – Bakhtin proposes a more playful and widely accessible experimentation to deconstruct our ‘habitual picture of the world’. Experimentation is envisioned to take place across the material and the textual to increase possibilities for action. Through engaging with Bakhtin’s ideas, this article seeks to draw attention to relations between the imagination of the world and political agency, and the need to include these relations in our own experiments with creating climate change awareness
Estabilidad oxidativa de aceites de soja y maíz enriquecidos con extracto hidroalcohólico de Pluchea quitoc
Soybean and corn oils are among the most popular vegetable oils, and are ingredients which are widely used in cooking and in the food industry. These oils contain many unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids, which makes them easily oxidized by oxygen. Extensive efforts are being made to prevent or minimize vegetable oil oxidation through the development of antioxidants. Phenolic antioxidants which are present in some extracts can be used as food additives to prevent lipid oxidation. In this study chromatographic analyses (HPLC and GC) of the Pluchea quitoc hydroalcoholic extract were performed. The content of phenolic compounds by the Folin-Ciocalteau method and the antioxidant properties against radicals 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) were also evaluated. The effect of samples prepared with soybean and corn oils enriched with Pluchea quitoc hydroalcoholic extract was determined and compared with samples of these oils which were free of antioxidants and with samples containing the synthetic antioxidant BHT. The results showed potential for application of the extract. A high content of phenolic compounds (314 milligrams of gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g of extract) and good IC50 values were detected for the inhibition of the radicals DPPH and ABTS (13.2 µg·mL-1 and 5.6 µg·mL-1). In the evaluation of the oxidative stability of the oils enriched with this extract, it was found that at 1% concentration it was possible to obtain values of induction period (IP) close to the samples with added BHT.Los aceites de soja y maíz se encuentran entre los aceites vegetales más populares, ingredientes ampliamente utilizados en la cocina y también en la industria alimentaria.
ESC NN-Potentials in Momentum Space. I. PS-PS Exchange Potentials
A momentum space representation is derived for the Nijmegen
Extended-Soft-Core (ESC) interactions. The partial wave projection of this
representation is carried through, in principle for Two-Meson-Exchange (TME) in
general. Explicit results for the momentum space partial wave NN-potentials
from PS-PS-Exchange are given.Comment: 23 pages, 2 PostScript figures, revtex
Properties of the Ideal Ginzburg-Landau Vortex Lattice
The magnetization curves M(H) for ideal type-II superconductors and the
maximum, minimum, and saddle point magnetic fields of the vortex lattice are
calculated from Ginzburg-Landau theory for the entire ranges of applied
magnetic fields Hc1 <= H < Hc2 or inductions 0 <= B < Hc2 and Ginzburg-Landau
parameters sqrt(1/2) <= kappa <= 1000. Results for the triangular and square
flux-line lattices are compared with the results of the circular cell
approximation. The exact magnetic field B(x,y) and magnetization M(H, kappa)
are compared with often used approximate expressions, some of which deviate
considerably or have limited validity. Useful limiting expressions and
analytical interpolation formulas are presented.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
Phonons and specific heat of linear dense phases of atoms physisorbed in the grooves of carbon nanotube bundles
The vibrational properties (phonons) of a one-dimensional periodic phase of
atoms physisorbed in the external groove of the carbon nanotube bundle are
studied. Analytical expressions for the phonon dispersion relations are
derived. The derived expressions are applied to Xe, Kr and Ar adsorbates. The
specific heat pertaining to dense phases of these adsorbates is calculated.Comment: 4 PS figure
Intrasubject multimodal groupwise registration with the conditional template entropy
Image registration is an important task in medical image analysis. Whereas most methods are designed for the registration of two images (pairwise registration), there is an increasing interest in simultaneously aligning more than two images using groupwise registration. Multimodal registration in a groupwise setting remains difficult, due to the lack of generally applicable similarity metrics. In this work, a novel similarity metric for such groupwise registration problems is proposed. The metric calculates the sum of the conditional entropy between each image in the group and a representative template image constructed iteratively using principal component analysis. The proposed metric is validated in extensive experiments on synthetic and intrasubject clinical image data. These experiments showed equivalent or improved registration accuracy compared to other state-of-the-art (dis)similarity metrics and improved transformation consistency compared to pairwise mutual information
Soft two-meson-exchange nucleon-nucleon potentials. I. Planar and crossed-box diagrams
Pion-meson-exchange nucleon-nucleon potentials are derived for two nucleons
in the intermediate states. The mesons we include are (i) pseudoscalar mesons:
; (ii) vector mesons: ; (iii) scalar
mesons: ; and (iv) the
contribution from the Pomeron. Strong dynamical pair suppression is assumed,
and at the nucleon-nucleon-meson vertices Gaussian form factors are
incorporated into the relativistic two-body framework using a dispersion
representation for the pion- and meson-exchange amplitudes. The Fourier
transformations are performed using factorization techniques for the energy
denominators. The potentials are first calculated in the adiabatic
approximation to all planar and crossed three-dimensional momentum-space
-meson diagrams. Next, we calculate the corrections.Comment: 28 pages RevTeX, 8 postscript figures; revised version as to appear

The Average Kinetic Energy of the Superconducting State
Isothermal magnetization curves are plotted as the magnetization times the
magnetic induction, , versus the applied field, H. We show
here that this new curve is the average kinetic energy of the superconducting
state versus the applied field, for type-II superconductors with a high
Ginzburg-Landau parameter . The maximum of occurs at
a field, , directly related to the upper critical field, ,
suggesting that may be extracted from such plots even in cases when
it is too high for direct measurement. We obtain these plots both
theoretically, from the Ginzburg-Landau theory, and experimentally, using a
Niobium sample with , and compare them.Comment: 11 pages, 9 postscript figure
Analysis of mangrove forest succession, using sediment cores: A case study in the cananéia -iguape coastal system, São Paulo-Brazil
Sediment cores are an essential tool for the analysis of the dynamics of mangrove succession. Coring was used to correlate changes in depositional environments and lateral sedimentary facies with discrete stages of forest succession at the Cananeia-Iguape Coastal System in southeastern Brazil. A local level successional pattern was examined based on four core series T1) a sediment bank; T2) a smooth cordgrass Spartina alterniflora bank; T3) an active mangrove progradation fringe dominated by Laguncularia racemosa, and; T4) a mature mangrove forest dominated by Avicennia schaueriana. Cores were macroscopically described in terms of color, texture, sedimentary structure and organic components. The base of all cores exhibited a similar pattern suggesting common vertical progressive changes in depositional conditions and subsequent successional colonization pattern throughout the forest. The progradation zone is an exposed bank, colonized by S. alterniflora. L. racemosa, replaces S. alterniflora as progradation takes place. As the substrate consolidates A. schaueriana replaces L. racemosa and attains the greatest structural development in the mature forest. Cores collected within the A. schaueriana dominated stand contained S. alterniflora fragments near the base, confirming that a smooth cordgrass habitat characterized the establishment and early seral stages. Cores provide a reliable approach to describe local-level successional sequences in dynamic settings subject to drivers operating on multiple temporal and spatial scales where spatial heterogeneity can lead to multiple equilibria and where similar successional end-points may be reached through convergent paths
