    Get PDF
The ultimate goal for low cost packages for millimeterwave MMIC is to realize a miniature, light weight surface mount type package. This paper describes the design technologies of newly developed package, where we optimized via design by multilayer ceramic structure. As a result, insertion loss is about –0.5dB at 40 GHz (measurement include mounting board + one feedthrough) has been realized

Algivore or phototroph?: Plakobranchus ocellatus (Gastropoda) continuously acquires kleptoplasts and nutrition from multiple algal species in nature

The sea slug Plakobranchus ocellatus (Sacoglossa, Gastropoda) retains photosynthetically active chloroplasts from ingested algae (functional kleptoplasts) in the epithelial cells of its digestive gland for up to 10 months. While its feeding behavior has not been observed in natural habitats, two hypotheses have been proposed: 1) adult P. ocellatus uses kleptoplasts to obtain photosynthates and nutritionally behaves as a photoautotroph without replenishing the kleptoplasts; or 2) it behaves as a mixotroph (photoautotroph and herbivorous consumer) and replenishes kleptoplasts continually or periodically. To address the question of which hypothesis is more likely, we examined the source algae for kleptoplasts and temporal changes in kleptoplast composition and nutritional contribution. By characterizing the temporal diversity of P. ocellatus kleptoplasts using rbcL sequences, we found that P. ocellatus harvests kleptoplasts from at least 8 different siphonous green algal species, that kleptoplasts from more than one species are present in each individual sea slug, and that the kleptoplast composition differs temporally. These results suggest that wild P. ocellatus often feed on multiple species of siphonous algae from which they continually obtain fresh chloroplasts. By estimating the trophic position of wild and starved P. ocellatus using the stable nitrogen isotopic composition of amino acids, we showed that despite the abundance of kleptoplasts, their photosynthates do not contribute greatly to the nutrition of wild P. ocellatus, but that kleptoplast photosynthates form a significant source of nutrition for starved sea slugs. The herbivorous nature of wild P. ocellatus is consistent with insights from molecular analyses indicating that kleptoplasts are frequently replenished from ingested algae, leading to the conclusion that natural populations of P. ocellatus do not rely on photosynthesis but mainly on the digestion of ingested algae

An Al-doped SrTiO3 photocatalyst maintaining sunlight-driven overall water splitting activity for over 1000 h of constant illumination

Photocatalytic water splitting is a viable approach to the large-scale production of renewable solar hydrogen. The apparent quantum yield for this reaction has been improved, but the lifespan of photocatalysts functioning under sunlight at ambient pressure have rarely been examined, despite the critical importance of this factor in practical applications. Herein, we show that Al-doped SrTiO3 (SrTiO3: Al) loaded with a RhCrOx (rhodium chromium oxide) cocatalyst splits water with an apparent quantum yield greater than 50% at 365 nm. Moreover, following the photodeposition of CoOOH and TiO2, this material maintains 80% of its initial activity and a solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency greater than or equal to 0.3% over a span of 1300 h under constant illumination by simulated sunlight at ambient pressure. This result is attributed to reduced dissolution of Cr in the cocatalyst following the oxidative photodeposition of CoOOH. The photodeposition of TiO2 further improves the durability of this photocatalyst. This work demonstrates a concept that could allow the design of longterm, large-scale photocatalyst systems for practical sunlight-driven water splitting.ArticleCHEMICAL SCIENCE.10(11):3196-3201(2019)journal articl

Epstein-Barr virus-associated leukemic lymphoma after allogeneic stem cell transplantation

    Get PDF
Leukemic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated post-transplant lymphoproliferative diseases (PTLD) following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation are extremely rare. We can successfully treat an EBV-associated leukemic lymphoma patient with rituximab, cidofovir, and donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI). In the present case, EBV-specific T cells that were present in the peripheral blood before rituximab administration treatment rapidly increased after DLI in association with a decrease in the EBV-DNA load. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.Embargo Period 12 month

GEF-H1 Mediated Control of NOD1 Dependent NF-κB Activation by Shigella Effectors

    Get PDF
Shigella flexneri has evolved the ability to modify host cell function with intracellular active effectors to overcome the intestinal barrier. The detection of these microbial effectors and the initiation of innate immune responses are critical for rapid mucosal defense activation. The guanine nucleotide exchange factor H1 (GEF-H1) mediates RhoA activation required for cell invasion by the enteroinvasive pathogen Shigella flexneri. Surprisingly, GEF-H1 is requisite for NF-κB activation in response to Shigella infection. GEF-H1 interacts with NOD1 and is required for RIP2 dependent NF-κB activation by H-Ala-D-γGlu-DAP (γTriDAP). GEF-H1 is essential for NF-κB activation by the Shigella effectors IpgB2 and OspB, which were found to signal in a NOD1 and RhoA Kinase (ROCK) dependent manner. Our results demonstrate that GEF-H1 is a critical component of cellular defenses forming an intracellular sensing system with NOD1 for the detection of microbial effectors during cell invasion by pathogens

Measurement of terrestrial age of Antarctic meteorites by thermoluminescence technique

The thermoluminescence (TL) of Antarctic meteorites, ALH-77256,90 (Di), ALH-77294,81,82 (H5), ALH-765,75,85 (Eu), ALH-768,83 (H6) and ALH-77272,83,84 (L6) is measured. The depth dependence of the TL for ALH-77294,81,ALH-765,75 and ALH-768,83,which have fusion crusts, is also measured. The heating of the surface material (0-1.5mm depth) during atmospheric passage is estimated from the fading of the high temperature TL. It is revealed that this atmospheric heating entirely removes the low temperature TL from the surface of a meteorite and the present low temperature TL glow of the surface material is produced by subsequent terrestrial radiation in Antarctica. The terrestrial ages of these meteorites are estimated from the TL of the surface material with an assumption about the Antarctic storage conditions (stored on the surface or buried under the ice sheet)

Search for Yamato meteorites in December 1981

    Get PDF
Search for Antarctic meteorites was carried out by the wintering party of the 22nd Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition in the Meteorite Ice Field in the vicinity of the Yamato Mountains in December 1981. Search in the hexagonal experiment area showed that the emergence of meteorites from the ice sheet due to ablation of ice took place at a rate of one meteorite per year per 2(km)^2 during two years. Collected specimens are 133 in number and 25.928kg in weight, and consist of ordinary chondrites, carbonaceous chondrites and diogenites. Distribution of occurrence sites suggests that a bare ice field near small nunataks is the meteorite-concentrated area, as was pointed out before

A New Testing Procedure for the Probability of Rare Events

    Get PDF
We consider a testing procedure for the occurrence probability of rare events such as a severe adverse drug reaction observed after the release of a drug to market. Occurrence probabilities in two periods or populations Ω_0 and Ω_1 are compared. Under the condition that k events were observed among n patients for one population Ω_0, we test whether the occurrence probability for the second period or population Ω_1 is the same as that in Ω_0. We derive the null distribution and the non-null distribution of the test statistic both in exact and approximate forms, and make numerical assessment of the accuracy of the approximation. Further, the power function is also derived and the power of the test will be evaluated using the power function
