Thin-disk laser pump schemes for large number of passes and moderate pump source quality

Novel thin-disk laser pump layouts are proposed yielding an increased number of passes for a given pump module size and pump source quality. These novel layouts result from a general scheme which bases on merging two simpler pump optics arrangements. Some peculiar examples can be realized by adapting standard commercially available pump optics simply by intro ducing an additional mirror-pair. More pump passes yield better efficiency, opening the way for usage of active materials with low absorption. In a standard multi-pass pump design, scaling of the number of beam passes brings ab out an increase of the overall size of the optical arrangement or an increase of the pump source quality requirements. Such increases are minimized in our scheme, making them eligible for industrial applicationsComment: 16 pages, 9 figure

Compact 20-pass thin-disk amplifier insensitive to thermal lensing

We present a multi-pass amplifier which passively compensates for distortions of the spherical phase front occurring in the active medium. The design is based on the Fourier transform propagation which makes the output beam parameters insensitive to variation of thermal lens effects in the active medium. The realized system allows for 20 reflections on the active medium and delivers a small signal gain of 30 with M2^2 = 1.16. Its novel geometry combining Fourier transform propagations with 4f-imaging stages as well as a compact array of adjustable mirrors allows for a layout with a footprint of 400 mm x 1000 mm.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

Measurement of the Michel Parameter xi" in Polarized Muon Decay and Implications on Exotic Couplings of the Leptonic Weak Interaction

The Michel parameter xi" has been determined from a measurement of the longitudinal polarization of positrons emitted in the decay of polarized and depolarized muons. The result, xi" = 0.981 +- 0.045stat +- 0.003syst, is consistent with the Standard Model prediction of unity, and provides an order of magnitude improvement in the relative precision of this parameter. This value sets new constraints on exotic couplings beyond the dominant V-A description of the leptonic weak interaction.Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures, 3 tables; submitted to Phys. Rev.

Startup of the High-Intensity Ultracold Neutron Source at the Paul Scherrer Institute

Ultracold neutrons (UCN) can be stored in suitable bottles and observed for several hundreds of seconds. Therefore UCN can be used to study in detail the fundamental properties of the neutron. A new user facility providing ultracold neutrons for fundamental physics research has been constructed at the Paul Scherrer Institute, the PSI UCN source. Assembly of the facility finished in December 2010 with the first production of ultracold neutrons. Operation approval was received in June 2011. We give an overview of the source and the status at startup.Comment: Proceedings of the International Conference on Exotic Atoms and Related Topics - EXA2011 September 5-9, 2011 Austrian Academy of Sciences, Theatersaal, Sonnenfelsgasse 19, 1010 Wien, Austria 6 pages, 3 figure

T-DNA insertion mutants reveal complex expression patterns of the aldehyde dehydrogenase 3H1 locus in Arabidopsis thaliana

The Arabidopsis thaliana aldehyde dehydrogenase 3H1 gene (ALDH3H1; AT1G44170) belongs to family 3 of the plant aldehyde dehydrogenase superfamily. The full-length transcript of the corresponding gene comprises an open reading frame of 1583 bp and encodes a protein of 484 amino acid residues. Gene expression studies have shown that this transcript accumulates mainly in the roots of 4-week-old plants following abscisic acid, dehydration, and NaCl treatments. The current study provided experimental data that the ALDH3H1 locus generates at least five alternative transcript variants in addition to the previously described ALDH3H1 mRNA. The alternative transcripts accumulated in wild-type plants at a low level but were upregulated in a mutant that carried a T-DNA insertion in the first exon of the gene. Expression of the transcript isoforms involved alternative gene splicing combined with an alternative promoter. The transcript isoforms were differentially expressed in the roots and shoots and showed developmental stage- and tissue-specific expression patterns. These data support the hypothesis that alternative isoforms produced by gene splicing or alternative promoters regulate the abundance of the constitutively spliced and functional variants
