The Protestant Reformation involved a recovery of just this distinction between primary and secondary discourse, and not only the distinction, but the priority of primary discourse, that is, the necessity of Gospel as the Word that forgives in the here and now

Copyright @ 2013 Elsevier B.V.Viscoelastic coatings are widely used to protect pipelines from their surrounding environment. These coatings are known to attenuate ultrasonic waves guided along the pipe walls, which may limit the range of a pulse/echo based inspection technique that seeks to detect defects in a pipeline. This article aims to investigate the attenuation of longitudinal modes in a coated pipe by comparing predicted and measured values for the reflection coefficient of an axisymmetric defect in a pipe coated with bitumen. This extends recent work undertaken by the authors for torsional modes, and also provides an independent investigation into the validity of those values proposed by the authors for the shear properties of bitumen, based on a comparison between prediction and experiment for torsional modes. Predictions are generated using a numerical mode matching approach for axially uniform defects, and a hybrid finite element based method for non-uniform defects. Values for the shear and longitudinal properties of bitumen are investigated and it is shown that the shear properties of the viscoelastic material play a dominant role in the propagation of longitudinal modes in a coated pipeline. Moreover, by using the shear values obtained from experiments on torsional modes, it is shown that good agreement between prediction and measurement for uniform and non-uniform defects may also be obtained for the longitudinal L(0,2) mode. This provides further validation for the shear bulk acoustic properties proposed for bitumen in the low ultrasonic frequency range, although in order to apply this methodology in general it is demonstrated that one must measure independently the reflection coefficient of both the torsional T(0,1) and the longitudinal L(0,2) mode before arriving at values for the shear properties of a viscoelastic material

Measurements of some dielectric and electronic properties of Pyrex brand glass

In spite of recent advances, the present state of our knowledge of the physical nature of the structure of glass lags behind the parallel investigations into the structure of other states of matter. The measurements of the electrical properties of Pyrex brand glass incorporated in this thesis were carried out in the belief that the study of such properties will increase still further our knowledge of the glassy state and the theoretical arguments expressed are basically in harmony with the prevelent ideas of the structure of glass. With more particular reference to the latter part of this work where attention is given to the dielectric properties of the glass under examination, it is felt that glass represents an ideal medium for further study of dielectric anomalies in matter. A rigorous investigation of the variation of dielectric properties with composition, temperature and other physical conditions is likely to lead to considerable advances in dielectric theory and also to add to the data on which to build a theory of the structure of glass

Democracy and Social Justice in Sarajevo’s Schools

After the end of the 1992-1995 Bosnian war, the people of Sarajevo found themselves rebuilding their country while also learning to live with their former enemies in this developing democracy. In this study we examined the extent to which democratic practices and social justice values were being taught in Sarajevo’s schools. Using a case study method, we gathered data gathered from interviews with educators in a variety of roles in Sarajevo, observations of elementary and secondary classroom teaching, and daily reflective journal entries about living and teaching in the city during the fall of 2008. Our data analyses revealed that democratic teaching practices and multicultural values are not being taught in Sarajevo’s schools. Instead, entangled and fragmented governmental structures, lingering emotional trauma from the war, and a general sense of pessimism about the future are interfering with educational reform and movement toward a democratic and socially-just society

Bordism Groups of Immersions and Classes Represented by Self-Intersections

We prove a geometrical version of Herbert's theorem by considering the self-intersection immersions of a self-transverse immersion up to bordism. This generalises Herbert's theorem to additional cohomology theories and gives a commutative diagram in the homotopy of Thom complexes. The proof uses Koschorke and Sanderson's operations and the fact that bordism of immersions gives a functor on the category of smooth manifolds and immersions.Comment: 16 page

A Short Statistical Sketch of the Child Labour Market in Mid-Nineteenth Century London

    Get PDF
The profusion of services and small trades that characterised the nineteenth-century London labour market makes it extremely difficult to arrive at any general understanding of the work of children and juveniles. This brief study employs published statistical materials and compares children’s occupations in the metropolis with the national picture. It argues that London contained exceptionally low levels of children’s employment compared with the rest of England and Wales. The preoccupation of metropolitan social observers with working children arose from the fact that child employment in mid-nineteenth century London was a marginal activity associated chiefly with the very poor.
