KACST Arabic Text Classification Project: Overview and Preliminary Results
Electronically formatted Arabic free-texts can be found in abundance these days on the World Wide Web, often linked to commercial enterprises and/or government organizations. Vast tracts of knowledge and relations lie hidden within these texts, knowledge that can be exploited once the correct intelligent tools have been identified and applied. For example, text mining may help with text classification and categorization. Text classification aims to automatically assign text to a predefined category based on identifiable linguistic features. Such a process has different useful applications including, but not restricted to, E-Mail spam detection, web pages content filtering, and automatic message routing. In this paper an overview of King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) Arabic Text Classification Project will be illustrated along with some preliminary results. This project will contribute to the better understanding and elaboration of Arabic text classification techniques
Pembentukan Kalender Ummul Qura Dalam Upaya Penyatuan Kalender Islam Global
Karreriella perforata n. sp. : a new Pliocene agglutinated benthic foraminifer with a perforated wall structure from the southern Bering Sea
This is the final version of the article. Available from the Grzybowski Foundation via the link in this record. We describe a new agglutinated benthic foraminiferal species from the Pliocene of Hole U1341B drilled in the southern
Bering Sea during IODP Expedition 323. The calcareous-cemented species Karreriella perforata n.sp. is coarsely canaliculated,
with regularly-spaced straight, unbranched pores that are open to the test surface. This feature of the test wall is rare
among agglutinated foraminifera, and is interpreted as a morphological adaptation to enable survival in the strongly hypoxic
environment present in the deep Bering Sea.We are

Progress Report for Annex II--Assessment of Solar Radiation Resources in Saudi Arabia 1993-1997
In 1987, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) signed a five-year Agreement for Cooperation in the Field of Renewable Energy Research and Development (R and D), which has been extended to 2000. Tasks include: (1) upgrade solar radiation measurements in Saudi Arabia; (2) assemble a database of concurrent solar radiation, satellite (METEOSAT), and meteorological data; (3) adapt NREL models and other software for Saudi Arabia; (4) develop procedures, algorithms, and software to estimate solar irradiance; and (5) prepare a grid of solar radiation data for preparing maps and atlases and estimating solar radiation resources and solar energy system performances at locations in Saudi Arabia
KALENDER UMM AL-QURA (Studi Pergeseran Paradigma Sistem Kalender di Kerajaan Arab Saudi)
Umm Al Qura calendar is a new calendar issued by the SaudianKingdom for civil purpose which is based on hisab (based oncomputation) system. The reason for issuing such kind of calendar isto unite Moslems all over the world especially in deciding the first dayof Ramadhan, Idul Fitri, and Idul Adha. The hisab system of Umm alQura calendar often leads to a controversy because it comes up withdifferent result in determining the first day of a month compared tothe other calendars which use rukyat (based on observation) system. However, this kind of calendar is widely adopted in the areas whereMoslems are minority.Kata kunci: Kalender Umm al-Qura, Pergeseran Paradigma, SistemKalender Kerajaan Arab Saud
UV-LED
UV-LED is part of a small satellite technology demonstration mission that will demonstrate non-contacting charge control of an isolated or floating mass using new solid-state ultra-violet light emitting diodes (UV-LEDs). Integrated to the Saudisat-4 spacecraft and launched onboard the Dnepr in June 19, 2014, the project is a collaboration between the NASA Ames Research Center (ARC), Stanford University, and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST). This technology demonstration will validate a novel method of charge control that will improve the performance of drag-free spacecraft allowing for concurrent science collection during charge management operations as well as reduce the mass, power and volume required while increasing lifetime and reliability of a charge management subsystem. These improvements are crucial to the success of ground breaking missions such as LISA and BBO, and demonstrate the ability of low cost small satellite missions to provide technological advances that far exceed mission cost
Thymoquinone suppression of the human hepatocellular carcinoma cell growth involves inhibition of IL-8 expression, elevated levels of TRAIL receptors, oxidative stress and apoptosis
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fourth most common solid tumor worldwide. The chemokine interleukin-8 (IL-8) is overexpressed in HCC and is a potential target for therapy. Although the transcription factor NF-κB regulates IL-8 expression, and while thymoquinone (TQ; the most bioactive constituent of black seed oil) inhibits NF-κB activity, the precise mechanisms by which TQ regulates IL-8 and cancer cell growth remain to be clarified. Here, we report that TQ inhibited growth of HCC cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner, caused G2M cell cycle arrest, and stimulated apoptosis. Apoptosis was substantiated by activation of caspase-3 and -9, as well as cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase. TQ treatments inhibited expression of NF-κB and suppressed IL-8 and its receptors. TQ treatments caused increased levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mRNAs of oxidative stress-related genes, NQO1 and HO-1. Pretreatment of HepG2 cells with N-acetylcysteine, a scavenger of ROS, prevented TQ-induced cell death. TQ treatment stimulated mRNA expression of pro-apoptotic Bcl-xS and TRAIL death receptors, and inhibited expression of the anti-apoptotic gene Bcl-2. TQ enhanced TRAIL-induced death of HepG2 cells, in part by up-regulating TRAIL death receptors, inhibiting NF-κB and IL-8 and stimulating apoptosis. Altogether, these findings provide insights into the pleiotropic molecular mechanisms of TQ-dependent suppression of HCC cell growth and underscore potential of this compound as anti-HCC drug
