    Nutrition and hydration implications for trained athletes

    Lifestyle choices threaten to compromise health and performance of trained athletes. This thesis presents a series of studies which broadly investigated the impact of nutritional and physical challenges to human health and performance. The potential causes and effects of fluid imbalances on physical health, immune function and athletic performance were investigated. Certain populations experience chronic low-level hypohydration and athletes often fail to rehydrate sufficiently between exercise sessions. The long-term implications of hypohydration are not fully understood, but are suggested to be associated with chronic disease. In this thesis, maintenance of fluid balance was observed in healthy males, despite a caffeine intervention thought to cause diuresis. Furthermore, when mild hypohydration was induced by 24-h fluid restriction, there was little impact on mucosal immunity during endurance exercise compared with euhydration. The impact of intensified training (IT) on the physical, mental, hormonal and immunological status of well-trained athletes was investigated. A performance-specific nutritional intervention was implemented to investigate the effects of nutrient availability during prolonged exercise training sessions. Phases of IT are a regular feature of a periodised training programme. However, an imbalance between training and recovery can have significant implications for long-term athletic performance and general wellbeing. Changes in neuroendocrine, neurobiological and mucosal immune function were observed during IT and some potential markers of overreaching and were identified. Further research is required before practical application of these markers can be used effectively in the field. A relatively short period of IT resulted in significant disruptions to mood state and sleep quality. Minor changes in exercise performance were observed.     Crossover from Single-Ion to Coherent Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior in Ce1x_{1-x}Lax_xNi9_9Ge4_4

    We report specific heat and magneto-resistance studies on the compound Ce1x{}_{1-x}Lax{}_xNi9{}_9Ge4{}_4 for various concentrations over the entire stoichiometric range. Our data reveal single-ion scaling with Ce-concentration between x=0.1x = 0.1 and 0.95. Furthermore, CeNi9{}_9Ge4{}_4 turns out to have the largest ever recorded value of the electronic specific heat Δc/T\Delta c/T \approx 5.5 J K2mol1\rm K^{-2}mol^{-1} at T=0.08T=0.08 K which was found in Cerium f-electron lattice systems. In the doped samples Δc/T\Delta c/T increases logarithmically in the temperature range between 3 K and 50 mK typical for non-Fermi liquid (nFl) behavior, while ρ\rho exhibits a Kondo-like minimum around 30 K, followed by a single-ion local nFl behavior. In contrast to this, CeNi9{}_9Ge4{}_4 flattens out in Δc/T\Delta c/T below 300 mK and displays a pronounced maximum in the resistivity curve at 1.5 K indicating a coherent heavy fermion groundstate. These properties render the compound Ce1x{}_{1-x}Lax{}_xNi9{}_9Ge4{}_4 a unique system on the borderline between Fermi liquid and nFl physics.Comment: 2 pages, 3 figures, SCES0

    Influence of Prolonged Exercise and Hydration Status on Antigen-Stimulated Cytokine Production by Whole Blood Culture

    Prolonged, strenuous exercise has been associated with a temporal depression of host defence, increasing susceptibility to upper respiratory tract illness (URTI). An elevated anti-inflammatory cytokine response to antigen challenge at rest has been reported as a risk factor for URTI. Chronic, strenuous exercise training appears to augment this anti-inflammatory response, with IL-10 release predicting URTI susceptibility in athletes. The purpose of this study was to determine the acute effects of a bout of prolonged exercise and hydration status on antigen-stimulated cytokine production. Twelve healthy males cycled for 120 minutes at 60% of maximal oxygen uptake on two occasions, once in a euhydrated state and once moderately hypohydrated. For the euhydrated trial, participants drank ad libitum during the 24 hours prior to the trial, and were provided with 250 mL water every 30 minutes during exercise. For the hypohydrated trial, fluid intake was restricted to 500 mL water during the 24 hours leading up to the trial, and no fluid was ingested during exercise. Blood samples were collected immediately before and after exercise, and following 2 hours of passive recovery. A full blood count was obtained, and plasma analysed for cortisol. In vitro antigen-stimulated cytokine production was determined from whole blood culture, using a multi-antigen vaccine as stimulant. Fluid restriction resulted in body mass loss of 1.3 ± 0.7 % and 3.9 ± 1.0 % before and after exercise, respectively. Exercise elicited a significant leukocytosis and elevated plasma cortisol, with no differences between trials. Post-exercise IL-10 production following stimulation was significantly higher than pre-exercise (p\u3c0.01). Both IL-4 (p\u3c0.05) and IL-10 (p\u3c0.01) release per lymphocyte were significantly increased 2 hours post-exercise compared with pre-exercise. Antigen-stimulated IL-6 production was significantly reduced 2 hours post-exercise (p\u3c0.05), an effect that remained significant when expressed per monocyte (p\u3c0.01). Although not quite reaching statistical significance, antigen-stimulated IFN-γ and IL-8 release tended to decrease following exercise, as did monocyte production of TNF-α. IL-1β and IL-2 production were not significantly altered by exercise. No significant effect of hydration status was observed for any of the measured variables. Prolonged exercise appears to result in augmented anti-inflammatory cytokine release in response to antigen challenge, possibly coupled with an acute suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokine production. These findings correspond with previous studies using mitogen or endotoxin as stimulant. Neither cytokine production nor plasma cortisol was affected by moderate hypohydration induced by fluid restriction for 24 hours prior to and during exercise

    A Cultural Resources Survey of the Trail Village Housing Development Project , Brownsville, Texas

    The City of Brownsville, Texas is planning to construct a new Housing development and associated infrastructure behind the Paseo Plaza Apartments in Brownsville, Texas. This location is a grassed 4.85 acre parcel west of Paredes Line Road (FM 1847) and between the present apartment complex, a drainage canal, and the City of Brownsville’s Hike and Bike Trail. The bike trail was formerly a Missouri Pacific railway line. The area has been heavily urbanized and the immediate project location has been mechanically landscaped to facilitate drainage. Prior to urbanization this area was intensive farmed and the aerial photographs provided by USDA , Soil Conservation Service (Williams, Thompson, and Jacobs 1977) indicate it was devoted primarily to citrus orchards and/or irrigated row crops. Both of these uses require extensive landscape modification , deep plowing, and land leveling practices. As a result, this parcel has been deeply disturbed to a depth of at least 4 feet and well below the 1 foot Area of Potential Effect. A pedestrian survey with limited shovel testing was carried out and this confirmed that the area had been deeply disturbed. In addition, a layer of construction fill has already been added. This construction layer is primarily a compact clay with numerous modern trash inclusions such as plastic, concrete, and gravels. Beneath this construction fill layer are the native soils, which are extremely compact clays that have been disturbed by plowing. These lower levels are devoid of cultural materials and have not even been penetrated by roots of root hairs. No prehistoric or historic cultural materials were present and no further work is recommended

    Possible canted antiferromagnetism in UCu9_9Sn4_4

    We report on the new compound UCu9{}_9Sn4{}_4 which crystallizes in the tetragonal structure \emph{I}4/\emph{mcm} with lattice parameters a=8.600A˚a = 8.600{\rm\AA} and c=12.359A˚c = 12.359{\rm\AA}. This compound is isotyp to the ferromagnetic systems RECu9{}_9Sn4{}_4 (RE = Ce, Pr, Nd) with Curie temperatures TCT{}\rm_C = 5.5 K, 10.5 K and 15 K, respectively. UCu9{}_9Sn4{}_4 exhibits an uncommon magnetic behavior resulting in three different electronic phase transitions. Below 105 K the sample undergoes a valence transition accompanied by an entropy change of 0.5 Rln2. At 32 K a small hump in the specific heat and a flattening out in the susceptibility curve probably indicate the onset of helical spin order. To lower temperatures a second transition to antiferromagnetic ordering occurs which develops a small ferromagnetic contribution on lowering the temperature further. These results are strongly hinting for canted antiferromagnetism in UCu9{}_9Sn4{}_4.Comment: 2 pages, 3 figures, SCES0

    Unusual Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior of Ce1x_{1-x}Lax_{x}Ni9_{9}Ge4_4 Analyzed in a Single Impurity Anderson Model with Crystal Field Effects

    CeNi9_{9}Ge4_4 exhibits unusual non-Fermi liquid behavior with the largest ever recorded value of the electronic specific heat ΔC/T5.5\Delta C/T \cong 5.5 JK2^{-2}mol1^{-1} without showing any evidence of magnetic order. Specific heat measurements show that the logarithmic increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient flattens off below 200 mK. In marked contrast, the local susceptibility Δχ\Delta\chi levels off well above 200 mK and already becomes constant below 1 K. Furthermore, the entropy reaches 2RRln2 below 20 K corresponding to a four level system. An analysis of CC and χ\chi was performed in terms of an SU(N=4)SU(N=4) single impurity Anderson model with additional crystal electric field (CEF) splitting. Numerical renormalization group calculations point to a possible consistent description of the different low temperature scales in Δc\Delta c and Δχ\Delta \chi stemming from the interplay of Kondo effect and crystal field splitting.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figure
