    IT terminology and translation: Cultural, lexicographic and linguistic problems

    The research tackles the computer linguistic terminology used wrongly or vaguely by Arab computer users in academic institutions and by English Arabic translators. To serve the purpose of this research, we inserted and/or  contextualized a number of computer linguistic terms in texts or contexts. The terms were heavily used in word processors or statistical packages. Five translators were requested to translate those texts. Simultaneously, we reviewed the computer books taught in two Arab countries which are Jordan and the UAE because these countries have witnessed good educational developments. After filtering out the translators' products from English into Arabic and after investigating the computer terminologies, we found that many computer terms are problematic. We classified the types of problematic vocabulary items and then tabulated them under four categories. Those were the vague, inaccurate, unchangeable and statistical ones. We also found that those problematic words were difficult to translate because of the Arabic culture or the inefficiency of English Arabic Bilingual dictionaries. The research ends up with a number of research and practical recommendations

    ESP after Thirty Years: An Overview of the Position of ESP in the 1990s

    ESP (English for Specific Purposes) is a relatively new branch of ELT (English Language Teaching) which is normally goal directed. ESP students study ESP courses because they need English for study or work purposes. Therefore, ESP is a means not an end as students study it to operate properly in their fields. In the view of many ESP practitioners and thinkers, the year 1962 has increasingly been considered as the year which marks the birth of ESP, the son of ELT (see, for example, Swales 1985: 1-3). The year 1992 could mark the thirtieth birthday of ESP which is a good opportunity to reconsider the status of ESP, which is arguable now. The article of Barber (1962) 'Some measurable characteristics of modern scientific prose' indicated clearly the birth of ESP. On the basis of these considerations, the principal aim of this paper is to take a fresh look at ESP and its status in terms of its current issues and recent drawbacks

    In the view of many ESP practitioners and thinkers, the year 1962 has increasingly been considered the year which marks the birth of ESP, the son of ELT (see.for example, Swales 1985: 1-3). The year 1992 could mark the thirtieth birthday of ESP which is a good opportunity to reconsider the sttus of ESP, which is arquably now. The article of Barber (1962) 'Some measurable characteristics of modern scientific prose?Ā  indicated clearly the Ā birth of ESP. On the basis of these considerations, the principal aim of this paper is to take a fresh look at ESP and its status in terms of its current issues and recent drawbacks.Although there has been a common agreement among ESP practitioners, applied linguists, etc. that ESP should not be separated from ELT (Mackay and Mountford 1978 and Widdonwson 1983: 83, for instance), the real and actual conditions of ESP demonstrate that it has started to distant itself from ELT. In fact, the recent circumĀ­ stances of ESP show celarly that there have been some general trends which are ESP bound and perhaps have nothing to do with ELT.Vedno več teoretikov in praktikov ESP /English for Specific Purpose/ ima leto 1962 začetek poučevanja ESP.
