In Connection With What?: Chadbourne & Parke LLP v. Troice and the Applicability of the Securities Litigation Uniform Standards Act

    Get PDF
This commentary previews an upcoming Supreme Court case, Chadbourne & Parke LLP v. Troice, in which the Court will clarify whether the Securities Litigation Uniform Standards Act precludes a state law class action alleging a scheme of fraud involving misrepresentations about transactions in covered-securities

Ellipsis, economy, and the (non)uniformity of traces

A number of works have attempted to account for the interaction between movement and ellipsis in terms of an economy condition Max- Elide. We show that the elimination of MaxElide leads to an empirically superior account of these interactions. We show that a number of the core effects attributed to MaxElide can be accounted for with a parallelism condition on ellipsis. The remaining cases are then treated with a generalized economy condition that favors shorter derivations over longer ones. The resulting analysis has no need for the ellipsisspecific economy constraint MaxElide

Viscous Effect on Surface Waves Generated by Steady Disturbances

    Get PDF
A linearized theory is applied here to investigate the viscous effect on water waves generated and maintained by a system of external disturbances which is distributed over the free surface of an otherwise uniform flow. The flow is taken to be in the steady state configuration. The analysis is carried out to yield the asymptotic expressions for the surface wave when the Reynolds number of the flow is either large or small

    Surface analysis in composite bonding

X ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle measurements on graphite fiber composites pretreated in a number of different ways including mechanical, chemical, and light irradiation were analyzed. Data acquired on surface contamination as a result of fabrication techniques provides answers to the strength and durability of adhesively bonded composites. These techniques were shown to provide valuable information on surface analysis of pretreated composites prior to adhesive bonding and following lap shear fracture

IMPACT. 1: When they return home, volunteers bring their knowledge and experiences – and a global outlook – back to the United States, enriching the lives of those around them. President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps in 1961 to foster a better understanding between Americans and people of other countries. Throughout Peace Corps' 55-year history, nearly 220,000 Americans of all ages have served in 140 countries worldwide. -- 2. The Ohio State University is the 9th highest producer of Peace Corps volunteers among large universities, with 49 alums currently serving. To date, 1,790 alumni from Ohio State have traveled abroad to serve as volunteers, making OSU the No. 9 all-time producer of Peace Corps volunteers.PRIMARY CONTACT: Gail Messick ([email protected])The Peace Corps sends the best and brightest Americans abroad on behalf of the United States to tackle the most pressing needs of people around the world. Volunteers work at the grassroots level to develop sustainable solutions that address challenges in education, health, economic development, agriculture, environment and youth development. Through their service, volunteers gain a unique cultural understanding and a life-long commitment to service that positions them to succeed in today's global economy

Transient analysis using conical shell elements

    Get PDF
The use of the NASTRAN conical shell element in static, eigenvalue, and direct transient analyses is demonstrated. The results of a NASTRAN static solution of an externally pressurized ring-stiffened cylinder agree well with a theoretical discontinuity analysis. Good agreement is also obtained between the NASTRAN direct transient response of a uniform cylinder to a dynamic end load and one-dimensional solutions obtained using a method of characteristics stress wave code and a standing wave solution. Finally, a NASTRAN eigenvalue analysis is performed on a hydroballistic model idealized with conical shell elements
