    Within the discourse surrounding mind-body interaction, mental causation is intimately associated with non-reductive physicalism. However, such a theory holds two opposing views: that all causal properties and relations can be explicated by physics and that special sciences have an explanatory role. Jaegwon Kim attempts to deconstruct this problematic contradiction by arguing that it is untenable for non-reductive physicalists to explain human behavior by appeal to mental properties. In combination, Kim’s critique of mental causation and the phenomenal concept strategy serves as an effectual response to the anti-physicalist stance enclosed within the Knowledge Argument and the Zombie Thought Experiment

    Image-guided retrieval of endovascular devices such as inferior vena cava filters, guidewires, and stents is well reported, though there is a paucity of published reports on biliary, genitourinary, or gastrointestinal foreign body retrieval utilizing percutaneous endoscopy, particularly when it is performed solely by interventional radiologists. In cases of failed traditional endoscopic techniques or to evade more invasive surgical options, percutaneous endoscopy can be an adjunctive tool employed by interventional radiologists to extract foreign bodies. In this article, clinical evaluation, perioperative management, and procedural techniques for biliary, genitourinary, and gastrointestinal endoscopy for foreign body retrieval are reviewed

    Inhibition of MRN activity by a telomere protein motif

    The MRN complex (MRX in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, made of Mre11, Rad50 and Nbs1/Xrs2) initiates double-stranded DNA break repair and activates the Tel1/ATM kinase in the DNA damage response. Telomeres counter both outcomes at chromosome ends, partly by keeping MRN-ATM in check. We show that MRX is disabled by telomeric protein Rif2 through an N-terminal motif (MIN, MRN/X-inhibitory motif). MIN executes suppression of Tel1, DNA end-resection and non-homologous end joining by binding the Rad50 N-terminal region. Our data suggest that MIN promotes a transition within MRX that is not conductive for endonuclease activity, DNA-end tethering or Tel1 kinase activation, highlighting an Achilles’ heel in MRN, which we propose is also exploited by the RIF2 paralog ORC4 (Origin Recognition Complex 4) in Kluyveromyces lactis and the Schizosaccharomyces pombe telomeric factor Taz1, which is evolutionarily unrelated to Orc4/Rif2. This raises the possibility that analogous mechanisms might be deployed in other eukaryotes as well

    Phenotypic expansion in DDX3X - a common cause of intellectual disability in females

    De novo variants in DDX3X account for 1-3% of unexplained intellectual disability (ID) cases and are amongst the most common causes of ID especially in females. Forty-seven patients (44 females, 3 males) have been described. We identified 31 additional individuals carrying 29 unique DDX3X variants, including 30 postnatal individuals with complex clinical presentations of developmental delay or ID, and one fetus with abnormal ultrasound findings. Rare or novel phenotypes observed include respiratory problems, congenital heart disease, skeletal muscle mitochondrial DNA depletion, and late-onset neurologic decline. Our findings expand the spectrum of DNA variants and phenotypes associated with DDX3X disorders

    An Experimental Study on Flexural Strength of Reinforced Concrete Beams with 100% Recycled Concrete Aggregate

    The following paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of the flexural strength of full-scale reinforced concrete beams constructed with both 100% recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) as well as conventional concrete (CC). This experimental program consisted of eight beams (four for each concrete type). The test parameters for this study include longitudinal reinforcement ratio and concrete type. The beams were tested under a simply supported four-point loading condition. The experimental cracking, yielding, and ultimate moment of the beams were compared with the ACI 318-11 and Eurocode 2-05 provisions and the modified compression field theory (MCFT) method. Furthermore, the experimental flexural strengths of the beams were compared with both flexural test databases of CC and RCA specimens. Results of this study show that the RCA beams have comparable ultimate flexural strength and approximately 13% higher deflection corresponding to the ultimate flexural strength of the CC beams
