Power Relations and Contraceptive Use: Gender Differentials in Bangladesh

    Get PDF
Previous research tends to ignore men and women’s contraceptive use based on existing power relations at the household level. Male role theory and power theory suggest that although men dominate at the household level and influence all the decisions that have taken place, these men become really invisible when it comes to contraceptive use. The present study attempts to explain the impact of power relations on differential contraceptive use among men and women in Bangladesh. Since the main objective of this research is to see differentials based on gender, men’s and women’s data from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey 2000 have been matched based on cluster number, household number, and line number and merged to get sample size of 2249. The results suggest that power relations at the household level have a significant impact in transcending barriers to contraceptive use. The thermal reaction of [Os3(CO)10(ÎŒ-H)(ÎŒ-SN2C4H5)] (1) at 110 °C afforded the new compound [Os3(CO)9(ÎŒ-H)(ÎŒ 3-η 2-SN2C4H5)] (2) in 84% yield. Compound 2 exists as two isomers, which differ in the disposition of the bridging hydride ligand. Both of the isomers of 2 have been characterized by a combination of elemental analysis, infrared and 1H NMR spectroscopic data together with single crystal X-ray crystallography. The isomers crystallize together in the triclinic space group P-1 with a = 10.4775(2), b = 13.3056(3), c = 15.0325(3) Å, α = 110.8890(10), ÎČ = 99.3880(10), Îł = 96.1620(10)°, Z = 2 and V = 1900.31(7) Å3

Activation of Tri(2-Furyl)Phosphine at a Dirhenium Centre: Formation of Phosphido-Bridged Dirhenium Complexes

Reaction of tri(2-furyl)phosphine (PFu3) with [Re2(CO)10−n(NCMe)n] (n = 1, 2) at 40 °C gave the substituted complexes [Re2(CO)10−n(PFu3)n] (1 and 2), the phosphines occupying axial position in all cases. Heating [Re2(CO)10] and PFu3 in refluxing xylene also gives 1 and 2 together with four phosphido-bridged complexes; [Re2(CO)8−n(PFu3)n(ÎŒ-PFu2)(ÎŒ-H)] (n = 0, 1, 2) (3–5) and [Re2(CO)6(PFu3)2(ÎŒ-PFu2)(ÎŒ-Cl)] (6) resulting from phosphorus–carbon bond cleavage. A series of separate thermolysis experiments has allowed a detailed reaction pathway to be unambiguously established. A similar reaction between [Re2(CO)10] and PFu3 in refluxing chlorobenzene furnishes four complexes which include 1, 2, 6 and the new binuclear complex [Re2(CO)6(η1-C4H3O)2(ÎŒ-PFu2)2] (7). All new complexes have been characterized by a combination of spectroscopic data and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies

Clinical implications of expression of vascular endothelial growth factor in metastatic lesions of ovarian cancers

    Get PDF
Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been identified as an important factor for tumour angiogenesis, which is essential for the growth, invasion and metastasis of solid tumours. Significantly increased VEGF level from the primary tumour to the metastatic lesion of ovarian cancers was found in 8 of 30 cases. The 24-month survival rate of the patients with significantly increased VEGF level was extremely poor (0/8 = 0%) in comparison with that of patients with no change in the level (15/22 = 68%) from the primary tumour to the metastatic lesion. This indicates that VEGF may contribute to the advancement of metastatic lesions, and that VEGF level in metastatic lesions may be a prognostic indicator. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co

Thromboinflammatory changes in plasma proteome of pregnant women with PCOS detected by quantitative label-free proteomics

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrinological disorder of fertile-aged women. Several adverse pregnancy outcomes and abnormalities of the placenta have been associated with PCOS. By using quantitative label-free proteomics we investigated whether changes in the plasma proteome of pregnant women with PCOS could elucidate the mechanisms behind the pathologies observed in PCOS pregnancies. A total of 169 proteins with >= 2 unique peptides were detected to be differentially expressed between women with PCOS (n = 7) and matched controls (n = 20) at term of pregnancy, out of which 35 were significant (p-value <0.05). A pathway analysis revealed that networks related to humoral immune responses, inflammatory responses, cardiovascular disease and cellular growth and proliferation were affected by PCOS. Classification of cases and controls was carried out using principal component analysis, orthogonal projections on latent structure-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA), hierarchical clustering, self-organising maps and ROC-curve analysis. The most significantly enriched proteins in PCOS were properdin and insulin-like growth factor II. In the dataset, properdin had the best predictive accuracy for PCOS (AUC=1). Additionally, properdin abundances correlated with AMH levels in pregnant women.Peer reviewe

he experiment was conducted to study the effect of time (season) of grafting on the performance of modified cleft grafting of Jackfruit at the BAU Germplasm Centre (GPC) of Fruit Tree Improvement Project (FTIP) of the Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. The experiment consisting ten levels of grafting times, viz., 30th March, 15th April, 30th April, 15th May, 30th May, 15th June, 30th June, 15th July, 30th July, 15th August, was laid out in RCBD with three replications. The results revealed that grafting done on 14th August showed the highest success (39%) and took the lowest time to first flush and first leaf opening (4.66 and 5.00 days, respectively) whereas the success rates were very low at the months of March, April and May. Likewise the highest vegetative growth of the grafted plants in terms of height, diameter, number of leaves, length and breadth of the leaves was found with grafting done on 14th August

Niche matters : The comparison between bone marrow stem cells and endometrial stem cells and stromal fibroblasts reveal distinct migration and cytokine profiles in response to inflammatory stimulus

Objective Intrinsic inflammatory characteristics play a pivotal role in stem cell recruitment and homing through migration where the subsequent change in niche has been shown to alter these characteristics. The bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (bmMSCs) have been demonstrated to migrate to the endometrium contributing to the stem cell reservoir and regeneration of endometrial tissue. Thus, the aim of the present study was to compare the inflammation-driven migration and cytokine secretion profile of human bmMSCs to endometrial mesenchymal stem cells (eMSCs) and endometrial fibroblasts (eSFs). Materials and methods The bmMSCs were isolated from bone marrow aspirates through culturing, whereas eMSCs and eSFs were FACS-isolated. All cell types were tested for their surface marker, proliferation profiles and migration properties towards serum and inflammatory attractants. The cytokine/chemokine secretion profile of 35 targets was analysed in each cell type at basal level along with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced state. Results Both stem cell types, bmMSCs and eMSCs, presented with similar stem cell surface marker profiles as well as possessed high proliferation and migration potential compared to eSFs. In multiplex assays, the secretion of 16 cytokine targets was detected and LPS stimulation expanded the cytokine secretion pattern by triggering the secretion of several targets. The bmMSCs exhibited higher cytokine secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)A, stromal cell-derived factor-1 alpha (SDF)-1 alpha, interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA), IL-6, interferon-gamma inducible protein (IP)-10, monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)1, macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP) 1 alpha and RANTES compared to eMSCs and/or eSFs after stimulation with LPS. The basal IL-8 secretion was higher in both endometrial cell types compared to bmMSCs. Conclusion Our results highlight that similar to bmMSCs, the eMSCs possess high migration activity while the differentiation process towards stromal fibroblasts seemed to result in loss of stem cell surface markers, minimal migration activity and a subtler cytokine profile likely contributing to normal endometrial functionPeer reviewe
