    Phonon sidebands of color centers in hexagonal boron nitride

    Low temperature photoluminescence spectra of a color center in hexagonal boron nitride are analyzed. The acoustic phonon sideband can be described by a deformation coupling proportional to strain to a phonon bath that is effectively two dimensional. The optical phonon band is described by Frohlich coupling to the LO-branches, and a deformation coupling proportional to lattice displacement for the TO-branch. The resonances expressed in the optical band vary from defect to defect, in some emitters, coupling to out-of-plane polarized phonons is reported.Comment: 7 pages, 4 fig

Elastically scattered deuterons are used for precise determination of the luminosity. The main steps of the analysis, including energy calibration, particle identification (PID) and efficiency studies, and their impact on the final accuracy of the result, are discussed

    MS in Asian countries

    This paper reviews all available English language literature on MS from Asian countries published between 1970 and 2005. Although limited data are available, the review reveals that western Asia--including the Middle East--has the highest prevalence of MS across the continent, and that MS in Asia largely resembles conventional MS in western countries. Opticospinal MS (a distinct clinical entity from conventional MS) is more common in eastern Asian regions. Larger epidemiological and genetic studies, with more complete ascertainment in various Asian populations, are needed so that we can understand the diversity of Asian MS

    Knowledge of and Adherence to Health Advice among Adults with Diabetes in Libya

    Background: Non-adherence to medical and health care advice is a common problem, though reasons for non-adherence can differ across different groups and societies as well as between individuals. Objective: to examine diabetes knowledge among people with both type1 and type2 diabetes in Libya and explore any other factors that enhance adherence to treatment and management of the condition. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used to collect data from adults with type1 or type2 diabetes who have been diagnosed for 12 months or more, in Benghazi Diabetes Centre, which is one of the oldest and largest diabetes registries in Libya. A total of 855 participants were asked to fill in two questionnaires; the Michigan Diabetes Knowledge Test to investigate the level of diabetes knowledge and the Confidence in diabetes Self-care Scale to assess self-efficacy. For the purpose of the study descriptive statistics and inferential statistical tests were conducted. Results: Diabetes knowledge is very poor especially among females and those classed as illiterate within the sample. The Mean HbA1c of 9.39 was higher than the recommended levels. Four variables namely knowledge about diabetes, duration of illness, family history and self-efficacy significantly predicted levels of HBA1c. Conclusion: Based on the above findings two different programmes of diabetes education would be recommended. The first programme of education would focus primarily on those with inadequate levels of knowledge about diabetes, particularly female and people with long duration diabetes. The second programme would be for both healthcare professionals and people with type 1 and type2 diabetes, which would consider the psychological factors that are involved in the process of diabetes management

    Proton–deuteron breakup reaction can serve as a tool to test stateof- the-art descriptions of nuclear interactions. At intermediate energies, below the threshold for pion production, comparison of the data with exact theoretical calculations is possible and subtle effects of the dynamics beyond the pairwise nucleon–nucleon interaction, namely the three-nucleon force (3NF), are significant. Beside 3NF, Coulomb interaction or relativistic effects are also important to precisely describe the differential cross section of the breakup reaction.     Experimental studies of the Coulomb force effects in deuteron-proton break-up reaction at medium energy regime

    A set of differential cross-section data of the ^{1}H(d, pp)n breakup reaction at 130 and 160 MeV deuteron beam energies has been measured in the forward polar angles domain. The data were collected with the use of the Germanium Wall (FZ Jülich) and BINA (KVI Groningen) detectors. This part of the phase-space is special with respect to the dominant Coulomb force influence on the system dynamics. The data are compared with the theoretical calculations based on the Argonne V18 potential supplemented with the long-range electromagnetic component. The predictions also include the Urbana IX three nucleon force model. The strongest Coulomb effects are found in regions where the relative energy of the two protons is the smallest

    Globaltest and GOEAST: two different approaches for Gene Ontology analysis

    Background Gene set analysis is a commonly used method for analysing microarray data by considering groups of functionally related genes instead of individual genes. Here we present the use of two gene set analysis approaches: Globaltest and GOEAST. Globaltest is a method for testing whether sets of genes are significantly associated with a variable of interest. GOEAST is a freely accessible web-based tool to test GO term enrichment within given gene sets. The two approaches were applied in the analysis of gene lists obtained from three different contrasts in a microarray experiment conducted to study the host reactions in broilers following Eimeria infection. Results The Globaltest identified significantly associated gene sets in one of the three contrasts made in the microarray experiment whereas the functional analysis of the differentially expressed genes using GOEAST revealed enriched GO terms in all three contrasts. Conclusion Globaltest and GOEAST gave different results, probably due to the different algorithms and the different criteria used for evaluating the significance of GO terms
