Electron and nuclear spin dynamics in the thermal mixing model of dynamic nuclear polarization
A novel mathematical treatment is proposed for computing the time evolution
of dynamic nuclear polarization processes in the low temperature thermal mixing
regime. Without assuming any a priori analytical form for the electron
polarization, our approach provides a quantitative picture of the steady state
that recovers the well known Borghini prediction based on thermodynamics
arguments, as long as the electrons-nuclei transition rates are fast compared
to the other relevant time scales. Substantially different final polarization
levels are achieved instead when the latter assumption is relaxed in the
presence of a nuclear leakage term, even though very weak, suggesting a
possible explanation for the deviation between the measured steady state
polarizations and the Borghini prediction. The proposed methodology also allows
to calculate nuclear polarization and relaxation times, once specified the
electrons/nuclei concentration ratio and the typical rates of the microscopic
processes involving the two spin species. Numerical results are shown to
account for the manifold dynamical behaviours of typical DNP samples.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure

Current article presents a methodological approach for a comparative study of the composition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a natural product and a nature-identical flavoring substance. The identification of VOCs was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry without reference compounds. The identification was made based on coincidence of the experimental and reference mass spectra and linear retention indices. During the first step, the closest match factor substance was selected based on the library search. During the second step, the result was verified by the means of experimental and reference retention indices data proximity. The reference retention indices were selected considering the identity of the experimental conditions (chromatographic stationary phase, temperature programming mode). The impossibility of identification of aroma components in acetonitrile extract of fragrance was shown due to the overlapping of their peaks with peaks of di- and tri- glycerides of fatty acids. The extraction and concentration of VOCs from vapor were carried out using the head space solid-phase microextraction. The fragrance content investigation revealed 39 volatile organic compounds including propylene glycol and triacetin as the markers of synthetic fragrances. In natural cocoa butter, also 39 volatile organic compounds were identified. All of them were common for the fermented cocoa beans. Pyrazines derivatives, characteristic of cocoa aroma, were presented with the following 7 components: 2,3-dimethylpyrazine; 2,5-dimethylpyrazine; ethylpyrazine; 2-methyl-6-ethylpyrazine; 2,3,5-trimethylpyrazine, 2,5-dimethyl-3-ethylpyrazine; tetramethylpyrazine. In quantitative terms, the isomeric 2,3-butandiols predominate in the head space of natural cocoa butter accounting for 37 percent of total VOC content. The analytical technique used allows investigation of multicomponent objects including the heterogeneous ones.Key words: gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, head space solid-phase microextraction, mass spectra, retention indices, fragrance DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.15826/analitika.2020.24.1.003E. Dynamic nuclear polarisation by thermal mixing: quantum theory and macroscopic simulations
A theory of dynamic nuclear polarisation (DNP) by thermal mixing is suggested based on purely quantum considerations. A minimal 6-level microscopic model is developed to test the theory and link it to the well known thermodynamic model. Optimal conditions for the nuclear polarization enhancement and effects of inhomogeneous broadening of the electron resonance are discussed. Macroscopic simulations of nuclear polarization spectra displaying good agreement with experiments, involving BDPA and trityl free radicals, are presented
High field dynamic nuclear polarization—the renaissance
Sensitivity is a critical issue in NMR spectroscopy, microscopy and imaging, and the factor that often limits the success of various applications. The origin of low sensitivity in NMR is well known to be due to the small magnetic moment of nuclear spins, which yields small Boltzmann polarizations and weak absorption signals. Historically, each advance in technology and methodology that has increased the signal-to-noise in NMR has shifted the boundary of what is achievable, often opening new areas of application and directions of research. The archetypal example of this phenomenon was the introduction of Fourier transform spectroscopy which led to increases of ~10[superscript 2]-fold in signal-to-noise, revolutionizing NMR and many other forms of spectroscopy. More recent technological developments of note include the continuing development of higher field superconducting magnets which increases polarization, and cryoprobes in which the excitation/detection coil is maintained at low temperatures increasing sensitivity through a higher probe Q and decreasing receiver noise. In addition, innovations in NMR methodology have improved sensitivity, classic examples being Hartmann–Hahn cross polarization, and J-coupling meditated transfer methods, and the introduction of 1H detection of [superscript 13]C/[superscript 15]N resonances. Furthermore, techniques for non-inductive detection of resonance, such as the AFM-based technique of magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM), have recently allowed observation of a single electron spin, and ~100 nuclear spins/√Hz[superscript 8]
