First Birth in Russia: Everyone does It - Young

Until the early 1990s, the common characteristics of Russian fertility were early and almost universal marriage and childbearing. In this article I examine the impact of cohort on first birth. I follow Russian women (based on self-reported ethnicity) born between 1930 and 1986 by applying event history techniques to the Russian Generation and Gender Survey (GSS). The results show that first birth took place earlier in womens lives cohorts born from the 1930s to the 1960s cohort. Among younger women, the trend is opposite, but it is too early to speak of a strong postponement effect. Differences in first-birth risk between cohorts are due to differences in marriage and cohabitation patterns

Advanced heat receiver conceptual design study

Solar Dynamic space power systems are candidate electrical power generating systems for future NASA missions. One of the key components of the solar dynamic power system is the solar receiver/thermal energy storage (TES) subsystem. Receiver development was conducted by NASA in the late 1960's and since then a very limited amount of work has been done in this area. Consequently the state of the art (SOA) receivers designed for the IOC space station are large and massive. The objective of the Advanced Heat Receiver Conceptual Design Study is to conceive and analyze advanced high temperature solar dynamic Brayton and Stirling receivers. The goal is to generate innovative receiver concepts that are half of the mass, smaller, and more efficient than the SOA. It is also necessary that these innovative receivers offer ease of manufacturing, less structural complexity and fewer thermal stress problems. Advanced Brayton and Stirling receiver storage units are proposed and analyzed in this study which can potentially meet these goals

"Because You're Worth It" Multilingualism in Finnish Television Advertising

Monikielisyys on osa suomalaisten jokapäiväistä elämää. Siitä syystä koin merkitykselliseksi tutkia, miten vieraat kielet ovat edustettuina suomalaisessa televisiomainonnassa. Valitsin kolme televisiosarjaa, suomalaisen saippuasarjan Salatut elämät, amerikkalaisen draamasarjan Täydelliset naiset ja niin ikään amerikkalaisen draamasarjan Asema 62. Kyseisten sarjojen uskotaan vetoavan eri katsojakuntaan, mikä taas vaikuttaa tauoilla esitettäviin mainoksiin ja niissä käytettäviin kieliin. Nauhoitin sarjoja marraskuussa 2009 siten, että jokaisesta sarjasta minulla oli tutkittavana neljä mainoskatkoa, yhteensä 138 mainosta. Mainosten analysoinnissa käytin apunani Guy Cookin luokittelua televisiomainonnalle tyypillisistä piirteistä sekä Helen Kelly-Holmesin tutkimusta monikielisestä mainonnasta. Yleishuomiona voidaan todeta, että monikielisyys on erittäin näkyvässä osassa suomalaisessa televisionmainonnassa. Suurimmaksi osaksi kieliä käytetään kuitenkin siten, että katsoja ymmärtää mainoksen ilman kielitaitoakin. Tulokseni osoittavat, että televisiosarjojen katsojakunnat vaikuttavat monikielisyyteen mainonnassa. Toisaalta Salattujen elämien mainoskatkoilla käytettiin huomattavasti enemmän pelkästään suomenkielisiä mainoksia verrattuna Täydellisiin naisiin ja Asema 62:een. Tämä selittyy ainakin osittain sillä, että Salatuilla elämillä on kaikkein heterogeenisin katsojakunta. Täydellisten naisten mainoskatkoilla oli eniten aikuisille naisille suunnattuja monikielisiä mainoksia, kun taas Asema 62:n mainoskatkoilla oli osittain monikielisiä mainoksia, joiden on perinteisesti uskottu vetoavan miespuolisiin katsojiin. Exploration of the relationships between Google searches and Bitcoin’s volatility, traded volume and price

Bitcoin has gained more and more press coverage during the past few years.Bitcoin is also fairly new phenomena, and as such it has not been researched as much as other, more traditional financial assets. Bitcoin is also highly speculative asset. That is why information demand is important variable when looking at Bitcoin’s key figures, which are: price, volatility and traded volume. This paper uses Google Searches (Google Trend Index) as an independent variable whereas Bitcoin’s price, volatility and traded volume are dependent variables. The aim of the study is to find relationships between the independent variable and the dependent variables, through correlations and regression models. The data will be examined yearly from 2014 to 2017. The paper is exploratory in nature, meaning that it will not make specific hypothesizes, due to the lack of research conducted on Bitcoin, but will make more broad assumptions on the results. The aim of the paper is to create foundation for future research and gain more information on the matter and possibly gain new perspectives. The main findings of this study were upward trend and overall very high correlations across all years. However, the results for 2017 were significantly higher than the previous years. All the regression models showed positive coefficients meaning that as the Google Trend Index rises so does Bitcoin price, volatility and traded volume. However, the rise in volatility was fairly limited. Also, nearly all the regression model results were significant. The problem of internal validity existed in the study, which meant that no causal relationship could be found
