Túlkorosság és esélyegyenlőtlenség az iskola kezdő szakaszában
A kĂ©sĹ‘bbre tolĂłdĂł iskolakezdĂ©s társadalmi következmĂ©nyeit feltárĂł vizsgálat a nevelĂ©studomány azon gyakorlatának kritikájábĂłl indul ki, amely a gyermekkort Ă©letkori átlagok mentĂ©n osztályozza, Ă©s erre Ă©pĂti fel pedagĂłgiai intĂ©zmĂ©nyrendszerĂ©t is. Ez a megközelĂtĂ©s idĂ©zi elĹ‘ az ĂłvodábĂłl iskolába törtĂ©nĹ‘ átmenet nehĂ©zsĂ©geit. E nehĂ©zsĂ©gekkel valĂł megkĂĽzdĂ©s egyik intĂ©zmĂ©nyesĂtett formája a kĂ©sĹ‘bbre tolĂłdĂł iskolakezdĂ©s lehetĹ‘sĂ©ge. A vizsgálat bemutatja, hogyan válhat egy, az iskola Ă©s a szakemberek által támogatott gyakorlat a kĂĽlönbözĹ‘ társadalmi rĂ©tegekhez tartozĂł gyerekek közötti esĂ©lykĂĽlönbsĂ©gek elmĂ©lyĂtĂ©sĂ©nek eszközĂ©vĂ©. A kutatás eredmĂ©nyei rámutatnak arra, hogy szoros kapcsolat van a kĂ©sĹ‘bbi iskolakezdĂ©s Ă©s a hátrányos helyzetű gyerekek iskolai kudarcai között, miközben ugyanez a gyakorlat további elĹ‘nyhöz juttatja a magas státusĂş gyerekeket
Rape myth acceptance as a relevant psychological construct in a gender-unequal context: The Hungarian adaptation of the updated Illinois rape myths acceptance scale
The Updated Illinois Rape Myth Acceptance Scale (UIRMAS) has been widely used for measuring rape myth acceptance. The scale was created in the United States, however studies have shown that rape myth is a culturally and socially embedded phenomenon. Therefore, in order to measure rape myth acceptance in other parts of the world, the scale needs to be validated. Victim blaming and rape myths are both widespread in public reactions to rape in Hungary (ie, in media reports and public opinion). Furthermore, Hungary can be characterized by a weak feminist movement and scoring low on gender equality measures. Nevertheless, we expected and found the reliability and validity of the Hungarian version of the Updated Illinois Rape myth acceptance Scale (UIRMAS). In Study 1 we conducted a confirmative factor analysis to assess the structural validity of the scale and identified the original factors of
A tĂşlsĂşlyos emberek implicit elutasĂtása gyerekkorban = Children’s implicit rejection of overweight people
Az elhĂzás pszicholĂłgiai aspektusai nem választhatĂłk el a tĂşlsĂşlyos emberekkel szemben kialakĂtott sztereotĂpiáktĂłl Ă©s a nĹ‘k társadalmi helyzetĂ©tĹ‘l. Mind a tudományos, mind a köznapi megközelĂtĂ©sekre jellemzĹ‘, hogy az elhĂzásĂ©rt elsĹ‘sorban az egyĂ©nt Ă©s nem a környezeti tĂ©nyezĹ‘ket teszik felelĹ‘ssĂ©. A tĂşlsĂşlyos embert a társadalom erĹ‘teljesen stigmatizálja Ă©s diszkriminálja, bár az elutasĂtás rendszerint indirekt formát ölt, Ă©s már gyerekkorban tetten Ă©rhetĹ‘. KvalitatĂv vizsgálatunk arra irányult, hogy felmĂ©rje e társadalmi összetevĹ‘k hatásait a serdĂĽlĹ‘kor elĹ‘tt állĂł lányok elhĂzással, a tĂşlsĂşlyos emberekkel Ă©s a soványságideállal kapcsolatos attitűdjeiben. Nyolc fĂłkuszcsoport-interjĂşban 51, 9—11 Ă©ves gyerek vett rĂ©szt Budapesten Ă©s környĂ©kĂ©n. Az interjĂşk szociálpszicholĂłgiai tartalomelemzĂ©se több szinten, a „grounded theory” elve szerint Ă©s a sztereotipizálás hatásainak elmĂ©leti kerete mentĂ©n zajlott. EredmĂ©nyeink a tĂşlsĂşlyossággal szembeni egyöntetű, negatĂv attitűdökrĹ‘l árulkodnak, amelyek kifejezĹ‘dĂ©se kommunikáciĂłs tabuba ĂĽtközik, Ăgy az elutasĂtás tĂ©nye implicit marad. A gyerekek morális dilemmát Ă©lnek át, mivel az elutasĂtás tapasztalata szembekerĂĽl a saját magukrĂłl fenntartott pozitĂv, toleráns Ă©n kĂ©pĂ©vel. A tĂşlsĂşly problĂ©mája megnevezhetetlen, mĂ©gis áthatja a csoportdinamikát. Kutatásunk eredmĂ©nyei arra engednek következtetni, hogy a serdĂĽlĹ‘kor elĹ‘tt állĂł lányokban kiemelten fontos lenne tudatosĂtani az (A) egĂ©szsĂ©ges táplálkozással, az egĂ©szsĂ©ges Ă©letmĂłddal, vagyis az elhĂzás megelĹ‘zĂ©sĂ©vel Ă©s kezelĂ©sĂ©vel kapcsolatos Ă©s a (B) kĂĽlsĹ‘ megjelenĂ©sre vonatkozĂł társadalmi elvárások, sztereotĂpiák Ă©s kirekesztĹ‘ attitűdök közötti kĂĽlönbsĂ©get.

The psychological aspects of being overweight are inseparable from obesity stereotypes and women’s social roles. Both scientific and lay discourses ascribe individual responsibility to obesity rather than external factors. An overweight person is strongly stigmatized and discriminated against; however, the rejection tends to take an implicit form. Not only obesity, but the rejection connected to it can be identified in childhood as well. Our qualitative research aimed at discovering how the exposure to weight stereotypes are reflected in pre-adolescent girls’ attitudes toward weight gain, overweight people and the norm of slimness. Eight focus group interviews were conducted with the participation of 51, 9- to 11-year-old pre-adolescent girls in and around Budapest, Hungary. Content analysis of the interview transcripts took place on different levels, within the framework of “grounded theory” and following the social psychological theories on the effects of stereotyping. Our results point to a unanimously shared negative attitude toward obesity, which are obstructed by communication taboos and therefore expressed implicitly. Participating children encountered a moral dilemma over the experience of rejection and their own positive, tolerant self-image. Therefore, attributional judgments connected to overweight determine the dynamic of rejection and acceptance. The conversations also made it clear that being slim is the widely accepted norm, it is the unmarked position. However, as these commonly shared ideas were not explicitly communicated, they put a further threat on the position of children with overweight, as the others expressing implicit or aversive rejection remain oblivious of their own behavior, while the victims of rejection are fully aware of it. The problem of overweight is indescribable, but governs group dynamics. Based on our findings we therefore argue, that pre-adolescent girls should become aware of the difference between healthy nutrition/healthy life-style, thus preventing obesity and the normative expectations of the ideal look and the discrimination connected to it
Névváltozás vagy kórkép változás? A pszichoszomatikus betegségkategóriák átalakulását befolyásoló társadalomlélektani tényezők = Change of name or change of syndrome? The influence of social psychological factors on the transformation of psychosomatic disease categories
Kutatásunk elmĂ©leti Ă©s empirikus vizsgálĂłdásokbĂłl állt. Az elmĂ©leti kutatások egybehangzĂłan igazolják hipotĂ©zisĂĽnket, hogy a szomatizáciĂłs jelensĂ©gek alakulásában jelentĹ‘s szerepet játszik az adott kor tudományos diskurzusa, a kultĂşra Ă©s a gyĂłgyĂtĂł-beteg kapcsolat. Az elmĂ©leti kutatásokbĂłl 10 tanulmány Ă©s 4 konferencia elĹ‘adás kĂ©szĂĽlt, 1 monográfia elĹ‘kĂ©szĂĽletben van. A kutatás empirikus rĂ©szĂ©ben fĂłkuszcsoport Ă©s interjĂş technikával, kĂ©rdĹ‘Ăves vizsgálattal, kĂłrrajzok, irodalmi elbeszĂ©lĂ©sek Ă©s esettörtĂ©netek, illetve mĂ©dia-reprezentáciĂłk elemzĂ©sĂ©vel vĂ©geztĂĽk vizsgálatainkat EredmĂ©nyek: 1. Magyarországon magasabbra becsĂĽlik a szomatizáciĂł elĹ‘fordulását, mint másutt 2. A tĂĽneteket egyĂ©ni okoknak tulajdonĂtják, bár a társadalmi hatások szerepe is megjelenik a diskurzusokban 3. A tĂĽnetek reprezentáciĂłiban megjelennek a szomatizáciĂłval kapcsolatos kortárs teĂłriák elemei Ă©s a nemekkel kapcsolatos társadalmi sztereotĂpiák 4. A laikusok Ă©s szakemberek vĂ©lekedĂ©sei több hasonlĂłságot mutatnak annál, mint a felek gondolják 5. a szomatizáciĂłs zavarok kialakulását jelentĹ‘sen befolyásolják az orvos-beteg kommunikáciĂł zavarai. Az empirikus kutatásbĂłl 6 tanulmány Ă©s 9 konferencia elĹ‘adás kĂ©szĂĽlt (4 cikk elĹ‘kĂ©szĂĽletben van). EredmĂ©nyeink bemutatására szimpĂłziumot szerveztĂĽnk a Magyar PszicholĂłgiai Társaság 2004-es NaggyűlĂ©sĂ©n, majd 2006 januárjában egy általunk szervezett konferencián (TĂĽnetek Ă©s törtĂ©netek. A szomatizáciĂł társadalmi Ă©s művĂ©szeti olvasatai) tettĂĽk közzĂ© a vĂ©gsĹ‘ eredmĂ©nyeket. | Our research project consisted of theoretical and empirical studies. Our theoretical results unanimously prove the hypothesis that the scientific discourse of a given period plays a pivotal role in the formation of symptoms. Culture and doctor-patient relationship has an outstanding importance in the transference of these effects. We have published 10 articles and 4 conference papers from the results and a monograph is in peparation. In the empirical part of the research we used focus group and interview techniques, questionnaire survey, content-analysis of patient records, narratives, case studies and media-representations. Results: 1. In Hungary the estimated prevalance of somatization is much higher than in other countries 2. Symptoms are attributed mainly to individual causes but societal effects also appear in the discourses 3. Elements of theories about somatization and gender stereotypes appear in the representations of symptoms 4. Lay and professional representations show much more similarities than the parties suppose 5. Problems in doctor-patient communication contribute to the development of somatization symptoms. We have published 6 articles and 9 conference abstracs from the results (4 papers are in preparation). We organised a symposium at the 2004. conference of the Hungarian Psychological Society. We presented the final results at a conference organised by us in January 2006 (Stories and symptoms. Social and cultural representations of somatization)
The Polish Round Table as a blueprint for “successful” social change?
The Polish Round Table offers a rare historical example where negotiations between representatives of opposing political sides achieved major political transformation in a peaceful way. Such an outcome should undoubtedly be labeled a success. However, in our commentary, taking the example of the Polish Round Table, we take a critical look at the interpretation of success of social movements by social scientists. In line with the ethos of social sciences, social scientists value (harmoniously achieved) progressive types of change, such as the change that followed the negotiations of the Polish Round Table. Indeed, when it comes to the Round Table, our definition of success may be blurred by the political evaluation of the changes of 1989 from a liberal perspective. The target articles point out the importance of specific structural conditions (both internal and international) and psychological processes (perceptions of power, efficacy and moral commitment) that led to the successful outcome. We therefore argue that it is pivotal to delineate the conditions of success, if we want to apply them to other contexts without bias. Neither hindsight, nor liberal bias are problematic per se, but they can evoke a form of wishful thinking that, as scientists, we may want to treat with some skepticism
Laikusok és gyakorló orvosok nézetei a szomatizációról = Lay and medical understanding of somatization
Kutatásunk cĂ©lkitűzĂ©se az volt, hogy megvizsgáljuk, milyen diskurzĂv mintázatot követnek a szomatizáciĂłval kapcsolatban a laikusok Ă©s a gyakorlĂł szakemberek elkĂ©pzelĂ©sei a mai Magyarországon, s hogy ezek a reprezentáciĂłk milyen viszonyban vannak egymással. A felmĂ©rĂ©s során 10 fĂłkuszcsoport-beszĂ©lgetĂ©st szerveztĂĽnk Budapesten laikus rĂ©sztvevĹ‘kkel, Ă©s 25 interjĂşt kĂ©szĂtettĂĽnk budapesti Ă©s vidĂ©ki orvosokkal.
