This case study aims to explore English language vocabulary acquisition experiences and conceptualizations of a single adult English language learner with mild dyslexia by drawing on metaphors and semi-structured interviews. In the study, we aimed to view the learner's perception through different lenses to gain deeper insight into her ulterior motives and desire. In the findings, language vocabulary acquisition experiences and conceptualizations attributed to the language were revealed by metaphors. This highlighted the learning barriers which obstructed the learner's foreign language acquisition; her comprehension of the English language and personal motives to overcome the challenges.publishedVersio

The Economic Complexity Approach to Development Policy: Where Turkey Stands in Comparison to OECD plus China?

Get PDF
In this paper, we classify the OECD countries plus China by means of the economic complexity approach to make a concrete connection between the current and future output structures and potential performance of countries in achieving high levels of per capita income. The aim is to identify the ranking of Turkey among various countries and analyze why Turkey has low GDP per capita according to its current production and export structure. Using export data (STIC Rev.4-3 digit) we calculate a number of economic complexity variables (export sophistication, open forest, diversification and product sophistication) for China and OECD countries, including Turkey. Then, we classify all the countries in terms of method of reflection matrix as in Hidalgo and Hausmann (2009) and identify where Turkey is located. Relying on the tools offered by the product space and economic complexity approach, the findings assert that Turkey is a diversified country, but its current production structure is specialized in less sophisticated products. Therefore, the country has a lower GDP per capita in PPP terms than its potential

In this study, the effects of curcumin, glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, advanced protein oxidation products (AOPP), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activities in experimental liver damage with diethylnitrosamine (DEN) in Swiss albino mice were investigated. The subjects (n = 9) used in the study were divided into 5 groups as tumor control 1, tumor control 2, curcumin protective, curcumin treatment and healthy control groups Curcumin oral gavage (in 150 mg/kg of ethylalcohol) was given to the protecting group for 19 days, 5 days before the administration of DEN, and 24 h after the administration of DEN. Hundred microliters of ethylalcohol oral gavage was given to the healthy group for 19 days. While MDA levels decreased significantly in the curcumin preservative group (p 0.05), (p = 0.128). AOPP levels decreased significantly in the curcumin protective group (p 0.05), (p = 0.073). SOD activities increased significantly in both groups. It was found as (p < 0.05), (p = 0.001) and (p < 0.05), (p = 0.002), respectively. GSH levels decreased but these reductions were not found statistically significant. CAT activities increased significantly in both groups. It was determined as (p < 0.05), (p = 0.001) for both groups. © 2021 International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc

Get PDF
PURPOSETo determine whether radiation exposure increased among different ages with chest computed tomography (CT) use during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.METHODSPatients with chest CT scans in an 8-month period of the pandemic between March 15, 2020, and November 15, 2020, and the same period of the preceding year were included in the study. Indications of chest CT scans were obtained from the clinical notes and categorized as infectious diseases, neoplastic disorders, trauma, and other diseases. Chest CT scans for infectious diseases during the pandemic were compared with those with the same indications in 2019. The dose-length product values were obtained from the protocol screen individually.RESULTSThe total number of chest CT scans with an indication of infectious disease was 21746 in 2020 and 4318 in 2019. Total radiation exposure increased by 573% with the use of chest CT for infectious indications but decreased by 19% for neoplasia, 12% for trauma, and 43% for other reasons. The mean age of the patients scanned in 2019 was significantly higher than those scanned during the pandemic (64.6 vs. 50.3 years). A striking increase was seen in the 10–59 age group during the pandemic (P < 0.001). The highest increase was seen in the 20–29 age group, being 18.6 fold. One death was recorded per 58 chest CT scans during the pandemic. Chest CT use was substantially higher at the beginning of the pandemic.CONCLUSIONChest CT was excessively used during the COVID-19 pandemic. Young and middle-aged people were exposed more than others. The impact of COVID-19-pandemic-related radiation exposure on public health should be followed carefully in future years

Do Tax Implications Change the Fisher Effect for the Turkish Economy?

Get PDF
This study investigates the validity of both the conventional and tax-adjusted Fisher effects using time series methods such as the ARDL bounds test, and Gregory-Hansen (G-H) cointegration test. To compare the conventional and tax-adjusted Fisher effects, we use two different time series data for interest rates: 1) interest rates adjusted for taxes, and 2) interest rates not adjusted for taxes. Using monthly changes in quarterly and annual interest and inflation rates, both the G-H and ARDL bound tests support the conventional and tax-adjusted Fisher effects. However, the magnitude of the inflation coefficient in the long-run relationship tends to decline for the tax adjusted Fisher effect

Verbal and psychological violence against women is considered an important sociological and legal problem and a serious threat within the context of basic human rights. The aim of this study was to detect the factors affecting verbal and psychological violence against women in Turkey, a developing country. The micro data set of the National research on domestic violence against women in Turkey, which was conducted by the Hacettepe University Institute of Population Studies, was employed in this study. The factors affecting women’s exposure to verbal and psychological violence by their husbands or partners in Turkey were determined using binary logistic and binary probit regression analyses. Women whose husbands or partners cheated and used alcohol were more exposed to verbal and psychological violence compared to others. In addition, women who were exposed to physical, economic, and sexual violence were more exposed to verbal and psychological violence compared to others. Exposure to violence by first-degree relatives increases the possibility of exposure to verbal and psychological violence. More effective results can be achieved by prioritizing women likelier to be exposed to violence in policies aimed at preventing acts of verbal violence against women in our country. There are few studies on verbal and psychological violence against women. Therefore, it will be useful to conduct relevant studies from different perspectives. Copyright: © 2022 Alkan et al. Get PDF
Ayrıca, bu durumlarda hipofizer yetmezlik, cerrahi komplikasyonlar ve enfeksiyon yönünden yakından takip edilmelidir.AIM: Pituitary abscess is a disorder characterized with central nervous system (CNS) infection, mass effect, and endocrine dysfunction. These abscesses generally occur due to hematogenous spread in conditions such as paranasal sinusitis, sepsis, and where the blood brain barrier breaks down. This paper aims to discuss four cases of preoperatively diagnosed pituitary abscess in the light of the literature. MATERIAL and METHODS: Following detailed clinical and hormonal examinations and imaging tests, 210 cases of pituitary adenoma and other sellar pathologies were operated on at the Neurosurgery clinic of Göztepe Training and Research Hospital. Results: All the patients showed fever, systemic signs of toxemia and endocrine dysfunction at the time of diagnosis. In these cases, a preoperative diagnosis of the disease was made thanks to characteristic MRI findings. The four cases were operated by the transnasal transsphenoidal approach and histopathological and microbiological studies were performed for surgical specimens. CONCLUSION: Pituitary abscesses are rare disorders responsible for a high mortality risk. Mortality and morbidity can be reduced by early surgical drainage and appropriate antibiotic treatments. Additionally, these cases should be closely followed-up in terms of pituitary insufficiency, surgical complications and infection
