Experience-dependent expression of immediate-early gene transcription factors (IEG-TFs) can transiently change the transcriptome of active neurons and initiate persistent changes in cellular function. However, the impact of IEG-TFs on circuit connectivity and function is poorly understood. We investigate the specificity with which the IEG-TF NPAS4 governs experience-dependent changes in inhibitory synaptic input onto CA1 pyramidal neurons (PNs). We show that novel sensory experience selectively enhances somatic inhibition mediated by cholecystokinin-expressing basket cells (CCKBCs) in an NPAS4-dependent manner. NPAS4 specifically increases the number of synapses made onto PNs by individual CCKBCs without altering synaptic properties. Additionally, we find that sensory experience-driven NPAS4 expression enhances depolarization-induced suppression of inhibition (DSI), a short-term form of cannabinoid-mediated plasticity expressed at CCKBC synapses. Our results indicate that CCKBC inputs are a major target of the NPAS4-dependent transcriptional program in PNs and that NPAS4 is an important regulator of plasticity mediated by endogenous cannabinoids
Physical activity counseling in overweight and obese primary care patients: Outcomes of the VA-STRIDE randomized controlled trial.
The purpose of this 2-arm randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of a 12-month, expert system-based, print-delivered physical activity intervention in a primary care Veteran population in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Participants were not excluded for many health conditions that typically are exclusionary criteria in physical activity trials. The primary outcome measures were physical activity reported using the Community Healthy Activities Model Program for Seniors (CHAMPS) questionnaire and an accelerometer-based activity assessment at baseline, 6, and 12 months. Of the 232 Veterans enrolled in the study, 208 (89.7%) were retained at the 6-month follow-up and 203 (87.5%) were retained at 12 months. Compared to the attention control, intervention participants had significantly increased odds of meeting the U.S. recommended guideline of ≥ 150 min/week of at least moderate-intensity physical activity at 12 months for the modified CHAMPS (odds ratio [OR] = 2.86; 95% CI: 1.03-7.96; p = 0.04) but not at 6 months (OR = 1.54; 95% CI: 0.56-4.23; p = 0.40). Based on accelerometer data, intervention participants had significantly increased odds of meeting ≥ 150 min/week of moderate-equivalent physical activity at 6 months (OR = 6.26; 95% CI: 1.26-31.22; p = 0.03) and borderline significantly increased odds at 12 months (OR = 4.73; 95% CI: 0.98-22.76; p = 0.053). An expert system physical activity counseling intervention can increase or sustain the proportion of Veterans in primary care meeting current recommendations for moderate-intensity physical activity. Influence of the Ion Coordination Number on Cation Exchange Reactions with Copper Telluride Nanocrystals
Cu2-xTe nanocubes were used as starting seeds to access metal telluride
nanocrystals by cation exchanges at room temperature. The coordination number
of the entering cations was found to play an important role in dictating the
reaction pathways. The exchanges with tetrahedrally coordinated cations (i.e.
with coordination number 4), such as Cd2+ or Hg2+, yielded monocrystalline CdTe
or HgTe nanocrystals with Cu2-xTe/CdTe or Cu2-xTe/HgTe Janus-like
heterostructures as intermediates. The formation of Janus-like architectures
was attributed to the high diffusion rate of the relatively small tetrahedrally
coordinated cations, which could rapidly diffuse in the Cu2-xTe NCs and
nucleate the CdTe (or HgTe) phase in a preferred region of the host structure.
Also, with both Cd2+ and Hg2+ ions the exchange led to wurtzite CdTe and HgTe
phases rather than the more stable zinc-blende ones, indicating that the anion
framework of the starting Cu2- xTe particles could be more easily deformed to
match the anion framework of the metastable wurtzite structures. As hexagonal
HgTe had never been reported to date, this represents another case of
metastable new phases that can only be accessed by cation exchange. On the
other hand, the exchanges involving octahedrally coordinated ions (i.e. with
coordination number 6), such as Pb2+ or Sn2+, yielded rock-salt polycrystalline
PbTe or SnTe nanocrystals with Cu2-xTe@PbTe or Cu2-xTe@SnTe core@shell
architectures at the early stages of the exchange process. In this case, the
octahedrally coordinated ions are probably too large to diffuse easily through
the Cu2-xTe structure: their limited diffusion rate restricts their initial
reaction to the surface of the nanocrystals, where cation exchange is initiated

More Than Brides Alliance: Baseline report, Malawi
The More Than Brides Alliance seeks to improve the lives of adolescent girls and includes activities across multiple domains (reproductive health, education, gender norms, and livelihoods, to name a few). The Population Council conducted baseline surveys of adolescents in select areas of two districts in Malawi as part of an evaluation of interventions to delay marriage. The goals of the baseline were to: 1) provide information about the current situation and context for adolescent girls in select areas in Malawi in order to inform the intervention; 2) provide a benchmark against which changes resulting from the intervention may be measured at the midline and endline periods; and 3) identify themes in need of further exploration through qualitative research. The study found significant differences between districts, and vulnerabilities emerged upon examining the data by education level and marital status. These findings suggest that girls in these communities have a demonstrated need for interventions to address these vulnerabilities. Findings from the baseline study will be used both to evaluate changes over time that may be attributable to the MTBA intervention and to inform programmatic staff seeking to understand the populations
Case Report: Ischial Stress Fracture Non-Union in a College Football Player
Stress fractures are common injuries associated with repetitive high-impact activities, often in high-level athletes and military recruits. Although predominantly occurring in the lower extremities, stress fractures may occur wherever there is a sudden increase in frequency or intensity of activity, thereby overloading the yield point of the local bone environment. Ischial stress fractures are a rarely diagnosed cause of pain around the hip and pelvis. Often, patients present with buttock pain with activity, which can be misdiagnosed as proximal hamstring tendonitis or avulsion. Here, we report a case of a college football player who was diagnosed with an ischial stress fracture which went on to symptomatic non-union after extensive conservative management. We treated his ischial non-union with open reduction internal fixation utilizing a tension band plate and screws. This interesting case highlights an uncommon cause of the relatively common presentation of posterior hip pain and describes our technique for addressing a stress fracture non-union in the ischium
Learning best-practices in journalology: Course description and attendee insights into the inaugural EQUATOR Canada Publication School
Background and purpose Dissemination of research results is a key component of the research continuum and is commonly achieved through publication in peer-reviewed academic journals. However, issues of poor quality reporting in the research literature are well documented. A lack of formal training in journalology (i.e., publication science) may contribute to this problem. To help address this gap in training, the Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency Of health Research (EQUATOR) Canada Publication School was developed and facilitated by internationally-renowned faculty to train researchers and clinicians in reporting and publication best practices. This article describes the structure of the inaugural course and provides an overview of attendee evaluations and perspectives. Key highlights Attendees perceived the content of this two-day intensive course as highly informative. They noted that the course helped them learn skills that were relevant to academic publishing (e.g., using reporting guidelines in all phases of the research process; using scholarly metrics beyond the journal impact factor; open-access publication models; and engaging patients in the research process). The course provided an opportunity for researchers to share their challenges faced during the publication process and to learn skills for improving reproducibility, completeness, transparency, and dissemination of research results. There was some suggestion that this type of course should be offered and integrated into formal training and course curricula. Implications In light of the importance of academic publishing in the scientific process, there is a need to train and prepare researchers with skills in Journalology. The EQUATOR Canada Publication School provides an example of a successful program that addressed the needs of researchers across career trajectories and provided them with resources to be successful in the publication process. This approach can be used, modified, and/or adapted by curriculum developers interested in designing similar programs, and could be incorporated into academic and clinical research training programs
Shock Wave Response of Iron-based In Situ Metallic Glass Matrix Composites
The response of amorphous steels to shock wave compression has been explored for the first time. Further, the effect of partial devitrification on the shock response of bulk metallic glasses is examined by conducting experiments on two iron-based in situ metallic glass matrix composites, containing varying amounts of crystalline precipitates, both with initial composition Fe_(49.7)Cr_(17.7)Mn_(1.9)Mo_(7.4)W_(1.6)B_(15.2)C_(3.8)Si_(2.4). The samples, designated SAM2X5-600 and SAM2X5-630, are X-ray amorphous and partially crystalline, respectively, due to differences in sintering parameters during sample preparation. Shock response is determined by making velocity measurements using interferometry techniques at the rear free surface of the samples, which have been subjected to impact from a high-velocity projectile launched from a powder gun. Experiments have yielded results indicating a Hugoniot Elastic Limit (HEL) to be 8.58 ± 0.53 GPa for SAM2X5-600 and 11.76 ± 1.26 GPa for SAM2X5-630. The latter HEL result is higher than elastic limits for any BMG reported in the literature thus far. SAM2X5-600 catastrophically loses post-yield strength whereas SAM2X5-630, while showing some strain-softening, retains strength beyond the HEL. The presence of crystallinity within the amorphous matrix is thus seen to significantly aid in strengthening the material as well as preserving material strength beyond yielding
Observational limits on type 1 active galactic nucleus rate in COSMOS
We present black hole masses and accretion rates for 182 Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in COSMOS.
We estimate masses using the scaling relations for the broad H β, Mg ii, and C iv emission lines in the
redshift ranges 0.16 < z < 0.88, 1 < z < 2.4, and 2.7 < z < 4.9. We estimate the accretion rate using an
Eddington ratio LI/L_(Edd) estimated from optical and X-ray data.We find that very few Type 1 AGNs accrete below
LI/L_(Edd) ∼ 0.01, despite simulations of synthetic spectra which show that the survey is sensitive to such Type
1 AGNs. At lower accretion rates the broad-line region may become obscured, diluted, or nonexistent. We find
evidence that Type 1 AGNs at higher accretion rates have higher optical luminosities, as more of their emission
comes from the cool (optical) accretion disk with respect to shorter wavelengths. We measure a larger range
in accretion rate than previous works, suggesting that COSMOS is more efficient at finding low accretion rate
Type 1 AGNs. However, the measured range in accretion rate is still comparable to the intrinsic scatter from the
scaling relations, suggesting that Type 1 AGNs accrete at a narrow range of Eddington ratio, with LI/L_(Edd) ∼ 0.1
