His story/her story: A dialogue about including men and masculinities in the women’s studies curriculum
The article discusses the issue of inclusion of men and masculinities in the Women\u27s Studies curriculum. Women\u27s Studies programs were started to compensate for the male domination in the academics. Women\u27s Studies presented a platform where scholarship for women was produced and taken seriously, female students and faculty could find their say or voice, and theoretical investigations required for the advancement of the aims of the women\u27s movement could take place. If the academy as a whole does not sufficiently integrate Women\u27s Studies into the curriculum, integrating Men\u27s Studies into Women\u27s Studies might end up further marginalizing Women\u27s Studies by decreasing the number of classroom hours students spend engaging women\u27s lives and feminist scholarship. Such an integration would presents an another form of male privilege, with men manipulating their way into the only branch of scholarship that has consistently focused on women. On a ground level, feminist scholars are apprehensive that a move from a Women\u27s Studies program to a Gender Studies program will reduce the political aspect of women\u27s programs
A magnetic lens for cold atoms controlled by a rf field
We report on a new type of magnetic lens that focuses atomic clouds using a
static inhomogeneous magnetic field in combination with a radio-frequency
field. The experimental study is performed with a cloud of cold cesium atoms.
The rf field adiabatically deforms the magnetic potential of a coil and
therefore changes its focusing properties. The focal length can be tuned
precisely by changing the rf frequency value. Depending on the rf antenna
position relative to the DC magnetic profile, the focal length of the atomic
lens can be either decreased or increased by the rf field
All-Optical Production of Chromium Bose-Einstein Condensates
We report on the production of ^52Cr Bose Einstein Condensates (BEC) with an
all-optical method. We first load 5.10^6 metastable chromium atoms in a 1D
far-off-resonance optical trap (FORT) from a Magneto Optical Trap (MOT), by
combining the use of Radio Frequency (RF) frequency sweeps and depumping
towards the ^5S_2 state. The atoms are then pumped to the absolute ground
state, and transferred into a crossed FORT in which they are evaporated. The
fast loading of the 1D FORT (35 ms 1/e time), and the use of relatively fast
evaporative ramps allow us to obtain in 20 s about 15000 atoms in an almost

Ultrafast Molecular Imaging by Laser Induced Electron Diffraction
We address the feasibility of imaging geometric and orbital structure of a
polyatomic molecule on an attosecond time-scale using the laser induced
electron diffraction (LIED) technique. We present numerical results for the
highest molecular orbitals of the CO2 molecule excited by a near infrared
few-cycle laser pulse. The molecular geometry (bond-lengths) is determined
within 3% of accuracy from a diffraction pattern which also reflects the nodal
properties of the initial molecular orbital. Robustness of the structure
determination is discussed with respect to vibrational and rotational motions
with a complete interpretation of the laser-induced mechanisms
Reaching optimally oriented molecular states by laser kicks
We present a strategy for post-pulse orientation aiming both at efficiency
and maximal duration within a rotational period. We first identify the
optimally oriented states which fulfill both requirements. We show that a
sequence of half-cycle pulses of moderate intensity can be devised for reaching

Breeding system and reproductive skew in a highly polygynous ant population
Abstract.: Factors affecting relatedness among nest members in ant colonies with high queen number are still poorly understood. In order to identify the major determinants of nest kin structure, we conducted a detailed analysis of the breeding system of the ant Formica exsecta. We estimated the number of mature queens by mark-release-recapture in 29 nests and dissected a sub-sample of queens to assess their reproductive status. We also used microsatellites to estimate relatedness within and between all classes of nestmates (queens, their mates, worker brood, queen brood and male brood). Queen number was very high, with an arithmetic mean of 253 per nest. Most queens (90%) were reproductively active, consistent with the genetic analyses revealing that there was only a minimal reproductive skew among nestmate queens. Despite the high queen number and low reproductive skew, almost all classes of individuals were significantly related to each other. Interestingly, the number of resident queens was a poor predictor of kin structure at the nest level, consistent with the observation that new queens are produced in bursts leading to highly fluctuating queen number across years. Queen number also varied tremendously across nests, with estimates ranging from five to several hundred queens. Accordingly, the harmonic mean queen number (40.5) was six times lower than the arithmetic mean. The variation in queen number was the most important factor of the breeding system contributing to a significant relatedness between almost all classes of nestmates despite a high average number of queens per nes
Phase transition and correlation decay in Coupled Map Lattices
For a Coupled Map Lattice with a specific strong coupling emulating
Stavskaya's probabilistic cellular automata, we prove the existence of a phase
transition using a Peierls argument, and exponential convergence to the
invariant measures for a wide class of initial states using a technique of
decoupling originally developed for weak coupling. This implies the exponential
decay, in space and in time, of the correlation functions of the invariant
measures
Chemical spots in the absence of magnetic field in the binary HgMn star 66 Eridani
According to our current understanding, a subclass of the upper main sequence
chemically peculiar stars, called mercury-manganese (HgMn), is non-magnetic.
Nevertheless, chemical inhomogeneities were recently discovered on their
surfaces. At the same time, no global magnetic fields stronger than 1-100 G are
detected by modern studies. The goals of our study are to search for magnetic
field in the HgMn binary system 66 Eri and to investigate chemical spots on the
stellar surfaces of both components. Our analysis is based on high quality
spectropolarimetric time-series observations obtained during 10 consecutive
nights with the HARPSpol instrument at the ESO 3.6-m telescope. To increase the
sensitivity of the magnetic field search we employed a least-squares
deconvolution (LSD). We used spectral disentangling to measure radial
velocities and study line profile variability. Chemical spot geometry was
reconstructed using multi-line Doppler imaging. We report a non-detection of
magnetic field in 66 Eri, with error bars 10-24 G for the longitudinal field.
Circular polarization profiles also do not indicate any signatures of complex
surface magnetic fields. For a simple dipolar field configuration we estimated
an upper limit of the polar field strength to be 60-70 G. For the HgMn
component we found variability in spectral lines of Ti, Ba, Y, and Sr with the
rotational period equal to the orbital one. The surface maps of these elements
reconstructed with the Doppler imaging technique, show relative underabundance
on the hemisphere facing the secondary component. The contrast of chemical
inhomogeneities ranges from 0.4 for Ti to 0.8 for Ba.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figure
Laser control for the optimal evolution of pure quantum states
Starting from an initial pure quantum state, we present a strategy for
reaching a target state corresponding to the extremum (maximum or minimum) of a
given observable. We show that a sequence of pulses of moderate intensity,
applied at times when the average of the observable reaches its local or global
extremum, constitutes a strategy transferable to different control issues.
Among them, post-pulse molecular alignment and orientation are presented as
examples. The robustness of such strategies with respect to experimentally
