Measurements of proton-induced reactions on ruthenium-96 in the ESR at GSI

Storage rings offer the possibility of measuring proton- and alpha-induced reactions in inverse kinematics. The combination of this approachwith a radioactive beamfacility allows, in principle, the determination of the respective cross sections for radioactive isotopes. Such data are highly desired for a better understanding of astrophysical nucleosynthesis processes like the p-process. A pioneering experiment has been performed at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI using a stable 96Ru beam at 9-11 AMeV and a hydrogen target. Monte-Carlo simulations of the experiment were made using the Geant4 code. In these simulations, the experimental setup is described in detail and all reaction channels can be investigated. Based on the Geant4 simulations, a prediction of the shape of different spectral components can be performed. A comparison of simulated predictions with the experimental results shows a good agreement and allows the extraction of the cross section
Neutron-induced astrophysical reaction rates for translead nuclei
Neutron-induced reaction rates, including fission, are calculated in the
temperature range 1.d8 <T (K) < 1.d10 within the framework of the statistical
model for targets with atomic number 83 < Z < 119 (from Po to Uuo) from the
neutron to the proton drip-line. Four sets of rates have been calculated,
utilizing - where possible - consistent nuclear data for neutron separation
energies and fission barriers from Thomas-Fermi (TF), Extended Thomas-Fermi
plus Strutinsky Integral (ETFSI), Finite-Range Droplet Model (FRDM) and
Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov (HFB) predictions. Tables of calculated values as well
as analytic seven parameter fits in the standard REACLIB format are supplied.
We also discuss the sensitivity of the rates to the input, aiming at a better
understanding of the uncertainties introduced by the nuclear input.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables in paper, 2 in Annex and online tables

Neutron-rich fragments produced by in-flight fission of U-238
The production cross sections of neutron-rich fission residues in reactions induced by U-238 projectiles at 950A MeV impinging on Pb and Be targets are investigated at the Fragment Separator at GSI. These two targets allow us to investigate fission processes induced by two reaction mechanisms, Coulomb and nuclear excitations, and to study the role of these mechanisms in the neutron excess of the final fragments.Peer reviewe
